Bodhi Tree Yoga Centre

I can’t even begin to describe my love for this place and the staff. I have been taking yoga classes here since 2009, and I am so lucky to have found Bodhi Tree. The staff is so amazingly friendly, and personable. Teachers take the time to get to know their students, and are very accommodating of different body types and injuries. Bodhi Tree has an adjuster program, so most busy classes have a teacher and an adjuster going around to help folks of all body types do poses safely and get the most benefit out of them. You’ll often see the owners of Bodhi Tree around, teaching classes, getting to know their students and helping out when it gets busy.
The studio is so gorgeous. It is very spa-​like in atmosphere, and one feels calmer and at peace just walking into the space. They have two rooms where classes are held — one that is bigger that holds classes such as Hot Foundation, Hot Hatha and Yang/​Yin, and another that is a bit smaller and holds workshops as well as smaller classes. Bodhi Tree has so many dynamic class offerings, such as Core and More, Yang/​Yin, Restorative, Yin, Shakti Spine Strength and Critical Alignment Therapy. They also host many workshops (and as someone who as attended quite a few, I gotta say, they all seem to be just as incredible as their class offerings!). Something that I really appreciate is that there are so many different classes offered. There are heated classes, non-​heated classes and warm classes. There are classes that are well suited for beginners, or for folks who are not new to yoga, but new to hot yoga. There are classes for seniors, sometimes workshops for children, and classes for pregnant women and new moms. No matter what mood you’re in, Bodhi Tree will have a class for you!
In my 6 years of practicing yoga at the Tree, I have taken classes with a lot of their teachers. Everyone has different styles, but I have never had a teacher at Bodhi Tree who’s class I haven’t loved. The teachers are all caring, accommodating and friendly, and really take the chance to get to know their students, answer questions, and help them in any way they can. I broke my foot in 2012, and the staff at Bodhi Tree was instrumental in my recovery. I had the opportunity to start practicing again while in the cast (just for the few weeks before I got it taken off), and during that time, the teachers whose classes I took were all helpful at offering adjustments and help so I could still practice. I also had the opportunity to do Yoga Therapy, which helped me a lot with some strength and flexibility after my injury. The teachers at the tree are just incredible at helping all students practice, no matter what’s going on in their bodies. Also, the desk staff is always so friendly and helpful as well, and the owners are really incredible and have created an amazing community of love and support.
I feel so blessed to have been a part of the community at Bodhi Tree, and I really can’t recommend them enough!

Bodhi Tree is the best yoga studio that I’ve found in Calgary. All of the instructors are sweet and I always feel incredible after a class. Instructors are always available after class to talk and ask questions about anything. The studio is warm and relaxing. The hot yoga isn’t too hot, just enough so that you sweat but don’t feel like you’re going to pass out. There’s a small parking lot near the studio and some street parking in the evening but I do have to go out of my way to get there and it can be bad traffic in rush hour if you don’t live in the area. Since starting with Bodhi Tree I’ve been able to come to class regularly because I just love being there. All in all, I wouldn’t go to any other studio in Calgary.

The owner has the right idea on what yoga is all about and she is a doll! You won’t die from being overheated (HELLFIRE YOGA DOES EXIST LOL) and you won’t feel like you just got out of a Bikram class (boot camp yoga… uhh i think mr Bikram is missing the point of yoga-​in my humble opinion)

Really enjoy bodhi tree and it is my local studio. Well placed (10 – 15 minute walk from the Sunnyside train), clean studio, helpful staff. Not too small of a women’s change room, but definitely could be bigger when it is busy.
I generally only attend their hot foundation classes and love their karma classes (pay by donation). I usually find the teachers great, but there are a couple there that really annoy me and either do moves that are far too hard with no modifications (like a head stand for 15 minutes and all the people who can’t do this can place their hands on the wall and watch –I’m looking at you Lisa!), or don’t plan out their classes very well.
If you don’t like teachers that wax rhapsodic about your inner spirit animal, or the beauty in a whispering blade of grass brushing against your cheek, you will probably be aggravated in these classes.
However, if you do like going to yoga to do some strength work mixed with meditation and reflection, you will like bodhi tree.

I love the instructors at bodhi tree, I feel everytime I practice yoga in their studio I learn something new.
I’ve tried about 4 hot yoga studios in Calgary, and this one is has the best instructors hands down.
I do have to knock off a star for the over crowded classes, everyone is literally packed in like sardines. But that’s my only ish about bohdi.

This studio is wonderful. Great, personable teachers with a wealth of knowledge.

My sister introduced me to Bodhi Tree after I expressed a desire to try hot yoga. I was nervous because the mere thought of doing yoga in a hot room made me nauseous, but she assured me I would be fine. And I was! I was so impressed with how gorgeous the actual studio is. The hallways, change rooms, and practice rooms are calming and soothing and put you into a Zen-​like state as soon as you walk in. We usually go to the Hot Foundation class, and the room wasn’t too warm for me which was nice! It was the perfect temperature. My sister told me that I could leave at anytime if I needed to, and thankfully I haven’t had to so far. The «big room» (as they call it) isn’t actually that big, so you need to get there early to ensure a spot in the class. I love how the instructors are so friendly and allow you to work at your own pace — I don’t feel silly when I take a rest after failing miserable doing a tough pose. You’re encouraged to break whenever you need and their adjustments are welcoming and helpful.
My only complaint is the price, it’s a little expensive and at $ 18 per drop in, can get excessive. I’m looking into getting a pass but even those are on the pricey side. However, for the calm feeling and generally happy mental state I am in after a class, it’s worth it! I’m bringing my boyfriend next week and I cant wait to see how he likes it.

Since writing my last review on Bodhi Tree, I have explored most every yoga option in the inner city. For this reason, I feel compelled to reevaluate what I wrote, as I have inevitably made my return to the Tree.
I am in the middle of a 30 day challenge at Bodhi, and it has probably been one of the most supportive environments to do such a challenge for only the second time.
I stand by previous statements that Bodhi Tree is the most gorgeous studio I have ever practiced in. In fact, since my last review, it is possible that the tree has grown more beautiful. Clean, open, airy, always with some sort of seedling growing on the ledges of the walls. Wonderfully decorated, now with pretty candle holders and a Puja wall.
Although many of my favourite instructors have parted ways with Bodhi Tree, I still like to believe that their instructors provide the most consistent practice in the city. They are each unique, though you can see in each of them that yoga is their lifestyle, on and off the mat.
The yoga yuppies still bother me, but I’m getting good at choosing my classes wisely, and find myself less distracted. Classes can be crowded, so be prepared for that.
It reminds quite pricey, so I am trying to determine how much I can commit to practicing here once I’ve completed my 30 day challenge, so this is the only reason I can’t quite award Bodhi with 5 stars still. It is very difficult to try and convince your friends to come to a $ 20 drop in class if they’re trying yoga for the first time only.

I used to practise yoga a few years ago, but never really got past the beginner stage. Now that I am a bit more settled in one location, I wanted to find a new yoga studio and commit to going more regularly.
Bodhi Tree is pretty close to my house, and it has gotten some great reviews on Unilocal,so I thought I’d give it a try. I wanted to wait until I had gone to a few classes before I wrote my review. I purchased the introductory week long pass for $ 25 and managed to go to 4 classes during that week! That’s $ 6.25 per class! Boo-​yah.
I tried the Hot Hatha, Hot Foundation, and the Begin Yoga classes. The descriptions of the classes are on the Bodhi Tree website, but I’ll give my own take on each class:
Begin Yoga: I went to this class with my BF who is reluctantly giving yoga a try. This was probably the best first class I could have ever taken him to. The class is designed to be a set of 7 classes, where each class builds on the previous. We dropped in to class #4. The instructor creates a comfortable, informal environment where it is okay to ask questions and laugh about hard poses. I wish Bodhi Tree offered this style of class more than once per week.
Hot Hatha: Slower style of practise in a heated room. Poses are generally held for longer periods.
Hot Foundation: Faster practise, in a heated room. But still not impossible for a beginner /​intermediate level. There was an assistant in this class that was helping to correct people’s postures. (I don’t think this class always has an assistant, I think it’s mostly random which class does /​does not have one.)
The instructors in both heated classes offered a variety of modifications for most poses. Having the option to take a harder or easier posture is much appreciated!
Some classes were very full, and others were not. Unfortunately I cannot leave work in the middle of the day to go to a yoga class, so I am probably stuck going to mostly full classes. The crowd in the women’s change room before and after class is a bit offputting, but seems to be unavoidable at popular studios.

I am very happy to update my review.
The owner of the Bodhi Tree took the time to listen to my concerns and discuss solutions. While there is no guarantee that she can make changes to meet every students concerns, she is willing to listen and implement where possible; and is good for a sustainable business.
I was blessed with an hour long conversation where she took the time to talk about the special reasons why the Bodhi Tree is as amazing as it is. I appreciated that effort and honesty.
The Bodhi Tree is unique and does have the BEST teachers. Of this, there is no question. Why is that? Because of the values, ethics, and integrity of the owner and what she believes in.
Sometimes we all need a little nudge out of our comfort zone.
We both shared and learned a great deal; and I am positive that the Bodhi Tree will be even more amazing than ever in the coming months.
I look forward to updating this review again as I see the subtle changes occur at the Tree :-)

There are two kinds of studios in Calgary — yoga studios that offer hot yoga and hot studios that offer yoga. Bodhi Tree Yoga Centre (BYC) is the former, and it is excellent. With some of the strongest instructors in the city, BYC is very focused on excellent practice. In many classes, they even have adjusters to help with technique. While generally more expensive than other studios, on quality BYC is outstanding.

Having been to countless other yoga studios in the city, I have come to the realization that Bodhi Tree is kinda like New York City, pricey, a bit cramped but in a league of its own.

I have been a member of Bodhi Tree for roughly four years — I periodically try out other yoga studios in Calgary, and I travel to the US frequently and always source out yoga studios wherever I am. I can tell you — with hesitation — that the level of instruction at Bodhi Tree is unmatched. The knowledge and skill of the instructors constantly astounds me; they are well-​educated in the mechanics of yoga poses, but that knowledge is also paired with accessibility, humor, and fun. Yes, they can be demanding classes — the instructors are always raising the bar for those of us who wish to push ourselves to our (safe) limits, but there are always provisions made for those who are at different «stops» along the way. I have had negative experiences at studios where there has been a «boot camp» mentality and no consideration is given for where the yoga practiciioner is in their own practice — Bodhi Tree encourages growth in your practice without Intimidation, bullying, or even a trace of judgment. It’s a safe, stimulating, and altogether serene place, with a strong feeling of community, and in my mind, it’s quite simply the best place in Calgary to practice yoga.

This was the first yoga studio I had visit a few years back. It is a beautiful space, where the teachers take their practice very seriously. Ive been a total of 8 times to Bohdi Tree to try the various styles of class, and the teachers have all been great. I found they were adjusting students gently when needed, and making sure to remind us to focus on our pratice and not the people around us. My three star rating comes from the fact that it is hard to find parking, the classes definately dont cater to beginners, and are ALWAYS, in my opinion overpacked.

I absolutely adore Bodhi Tree. Definitely one of the most beautiful studios in town. I love how attentive the instructors are to my practice helping me adjust ever so slightly just to get it perfect. I also found the staff to be very accommodating and very friendly.
For instance, tonight I showed up to the session 3 minutes prior to it starting and they were totally nice about it and advised me that I could still join the practice! I’ve been told that I can’t attend a practice at a different studio before.
The only thing stopping me from giving Bodhi Tree 5 stars is their prices. It seems that they are a bit more expensive when compared to other studios around town.

I absolutely love Bodhi Tree.
It’s refreshing that the instructors are really living the yogi life — they’re not just some fitness instructors in a yoga studio. Each of them have a different style, but I like that they are all warm, welcoming and not snobby to newbies. They know the physiology of yoga and balance it well with non-​denominational philosophy to create a space of physical and mental challenge.
I truly appreciate that the teachers will push you just enough, but are very mindful that we all have personal limits. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask for help or lay on your mat if you need a brief rest in a tough class. They will support you through your experience and make sure that you don’t hurt yourself. It’s not about who gets the perfect pose — it’s about doing your personal best. I never feel pressured by anyone but my own drive.
More reasons to like them:
*you can buy 10 or 20 time passes, as well as monthly
*you can sign in to classes online to save time
*nice change rooms with showers available
*beautiful, serene space
After a few months of going regularly, I feel like I’ve become part of the family there. I most enjoy the hot yoga classes. The price is absolutely worth it.

Bodhi Tree was a beautiful relaxing haven of yogic bliss the first time I visited, or at least it seemed like it. A beautiful reception, lovely changeroom and huge, spacious rooms in which to practice the yoga. Everyone was very chill, and it was all obviously designed to be very soothing.
I went for hot yoga with friends, and I was warned that I would sweat. We got there early and grabbed our spots — I was surprised that there was what looked like tape on the floor. Turns out that is so they can cram as many mats (and thus people) as is physically possible. We were like sardines in a heated room. Even that might have been ok, except the instructor was obviously not a practitioner of my favourite slow and deep hatha yoga. She went much, much faster. If you’re a yoga beginner to intermediate, watch out for the hot yoga.
The class was obviously made up of more experienced people, because she asked if we wanted to take it up a notch and ignored my strangled «no». I’m not a fan of curling up like a pretzle while I’m balancing on my hands in a heated room, trying not to fall on the people who are inches away from me. Sorry, I can take one, maybe two of three and I’m (white people) intermediate.
I went back for a different class and it was better. Be prepared for the hot yoga (and for yoga instructors to go full out advanced in a class of 40), and to be packed in tight. The benefits are that the instructors obviously know their stuff, and in some classes it is a peaceful interaction with your body.

this is the nicest yoga place i’ve ever encountered. the tradeoff is that the drop-​in fee is $ 17.
i’ve gone on various days and the instructors are pretty consistently good, though diverse enough that you can probably find one that suits your own style. the atmosphere is a bit like an oasis — you go in, and everything’s nice and peaceful. the hot classes are my favourite.
