C J A Y 92 1 Fm

Everything that rocks is their slogan and having listened to them for a couple of days, I’d agree. Mostly focused on the well known classics of rock and roll — AC/​DC, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, Nirvana and Metallica get the most play (yes, I took their recently played lists and popped it into Excel). But there are still lots of others that I think need more play — The Eagles and The Doors, for instance. But hey, that’s my musical taste and not everyone’s.
Not too many commercials, I’ll keep the dial in the office tuned here.

Nickleback: lol

CJAY 92 is not one of my favourite radio stations, although it used to be. Back in the days when it was the only rock station in Calgary, I’d have it on my radio dial. Keep in mind, this was like ten years ago. Before ipods. They play a lot of classic rock, which is all good and well, but I find there is a lot of repetition and it’s often not the classic rock I want to be listening to.
There is always lots of Nickelback, Metallica and Pearl Jam. It kind of all meshes together after a while. I’m not a huge fan of their mixes, and the personalities all feel like they have… aged a little. I still listen from time to time, but much like with Moez, it’s my fourth choice, you know.

I have a love/​hate relationship with CJAY 92. While certainly not my first, or second choice for a station in Calgary, I still find myself listening from time to time. Granted, it’s usually when station 1 or 2 aren’t playing what I want to hear.
CJAY 92 has suffered what a lot of radio stations go through over time. That struggle to stay relevant to your core listeners while picking up new fans — all while trying to avoid a re brand. While traditionally a classic rock station, CJAY has had to evolve to include modern rock. And yes, that tends to include bands like Nickleback. But CJAY knows who it is appealing to, which is why it is still one of the most popular stations in Calgary. They are accessible and strive to remain so.
For me, the radio station walks a line that I don’t personally like. Trying to stick to their tradition while attempting to compete with the Howard Sterns of the world. In the end though, it all just feels too fake and so I usually don’t stay for longer than a song or two. Sometimes they do strike a positive chord with me, but all to often they miss completely.

C J A Y 92 has been around forever. It was around when I was growing up in Calgary and it’s still around now that I’m back.
One thing I’ve noticed about C J A Y these days is that ALL the music they play is AMAZING. I don’t remember this station being THIS good back in the day! They’ve really kicked it up a notch and the rock just keeps on coming.
The other day, the hit list included back to back tracks from Metallica, Nirvana, Live, Green Day, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon and Fall Out Boy. DAAAMMMMN! I didn’t want to get out of the car!
I“m definitely a bigger fan now of C J A Y than I have ever been. If you haven’t listened to them in awhile, give them another shot. You’ll see — they’ve really changed things up, and their station full out rocks.
