Highlander has a fantastic selection at a very competitive price point. While I usually take a hard right and make a bee-line for the beer cooler, I’ve always been able to find the wines I’ve been looking for, scotches friends have referred to me, all the way through the liquor spectrum to a bottle of absinthe here or there. They’ve got an outstandingly cold walk-in cooler with a fantastic all round selection of beers. You’ll be able to find everything from Brewhouse and Lucky Lager, all the way through the mainstream Molson spectrum and even a great selection of world beers and plenty of Canadian Craft. Whenever a local brew puts out a seasonal or a limited run brew, highlander is always one of the first stores I can find it. They’ve got a points program that I love. I just give them my phone number whenever I make a purchase and every now and then I get $ 20 off my bill. Magic! There are several Highlander stores in Calgary, which is great because they’re awesome… really the only problem I have with this is with a name like Highlander, there can be only one! Badum ch!!!

A mint julep is a great summer drink — you have to like bourbon. I wandered into the Highlander and sparked up a chat with the guy on the floor and told him I was looking for a recommend on bourbon for a mint julep — he didn’t flinch and stated that the Bulleit was his favourite because of a slight carmel tone. I was not disappointed the bourbon was spot on — I need to head back for another as those juleps sure go down nice on a warm day in the back yard. Highlander has a great selection of wine, non-swill beers and liquors. AND, the staff can speak with knowledge on the products.

I use to buy most of my wine from Coop — it’s close and the prices are great. But too many times I’ve been overcharged, or the wine has gone bad. How many times is too much? I say 1. Recently, I’ve started to buy everything from Highlander. The staff are helpful, massive selection, good sales esp. volume buying, and I’ve had not one bad experience. I can’t find a lot of the wines at Coop/Kensignton/Superstore/Costco. My new go to place. Plus, I get bonus points(sign up for club members). The best Highlanders’ is the Marda Loop location — tons of specials and that extra special attention.

A great liquor store to be sure! The beer selection is above average … they have a nice array of Unibroue 750mils for about $ 5 or $ 6 each. A perfect«BYOB» option. Sadly could not find any Alley Kat there last night though. :/ Well, nobody’s perfect! The«new manager» did introduce himself to me one day he and I crossed paths admiring some micro-brews in the walk-in. He assured me that he has some Dogfish on order. I haven’t seen any yet but perhaps it hasn’t arrived or I missed it?

I had driven by Highlander numerous times. I was in need of a nice bottle of wine, so I thought I would give it a try. The place is huge! I checked out the chilled room with all the beer and couldn’t believe the selection! They were well stocked with all the usual brands, but had a thorough selection of international beers too! I’ve never seen so much beer! As I walked though the isles I noticed that they had some good sales on liquor, some were $ 5 – 7 off! On my search for a nice red wine I walked along the wine section, taking note of the featured selections. They carried the common wines from the US and Canada but also had a great selection of Italian and French wines. They even had a decent selection of Chilean wines, most of them were ones I had never come across. I chose one that was on feature, then was asked by a guy if I was finding everything okay. I asked him about the wine I had selected, if it was quite dry. He said it was and asked what I was looking for in a wine. I told him and in no hesitation he pointed out a different selection. So I traded my choice for his recommendation. The prices for wines are very decent, most of them ranging from $ 10 – 18. There is also a great premium wine selection ranging from $ 29 and up. I paid $ 15 for my wine and it was perfect! The selection and stock at Highlander are excellent! Their website is even worth checking out! I will definitely return to Highlander if I am looking for a new wine, or beer, to try!
