I am not a huge fan. The guy that owns it makes hand over fist money yet can’t be bothered to expand the size of the store to accomodate(1) growing customers and(2) expanding inventory. It is way too small a store. Another customer asked the owner why not use the second floor for expanding inventory and the excuse made was that less people would see his merchandise and he doesn’t want to pay any more employees than he absolutely has to. Parking is really bad, the neighbours aggravate any customers that park an inch too far off from the tiny designated parking space available. Calgary Parking Authority has been called to the store numerous times to ticket customers if they park too close to the corner store beside him when there is no space to park. Customers tell him, he just does not care to do anything about it. The owner pushes customers to spend way more than their target price, and you can’t help but feel a bit ripped off. Don’t bother complaining to him, he is apathetic and wants your money more than cares how you care about how he pushes sales on you. IMO the store is currently a fire hazard.

Redd Skull, you are a comic book lovers comic book store. If you know what I mean. This is a store for people who love the aroma of gently aging newsprint and 17 versions of the same comic(with different collector edition covers.) I love the claustrophobic stacks of books, comics, figurines and posters and the fact that most of the people who work there have a pathological love for all things pertaining to the world of comics — and let’s face it, nerd-dom. If you’re looking for your fix, Redd Skull has it.

Oh Redd Skull, how you make me adore Edmonton Trail that much more. It works out making the trip to that area when I can have a terrific meal and take a 2 minute walk to a jewel of the geek world in Calgary. I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with a couple folks there, one being Kelly. He is my kind of guy. Our white blood cells are so busy reading their comic books that they’re surprised when we get sick, yet have to finish reading before they do their jobs and beat the flu. I’ve picked up something here or there that I wanted, and will update later as they have a warehouse with what I’m sure is full of what I’m looking for to expand my collection. Geeks: Ignore that last sentence. If you try to touch anything I need, I’ll smack you: P

Probably the most claustrophobic comic book store I’ve ever been in. A great selection in new and back issues, animé and especially alternative comic books, but you’re wedged in tight into a shop that’s so jam packed in product that you feel like a sardine in a can. I’m sure there’s probably tons of hidden surprises there, but god knows how the heck can anyone find anything there!!!

I have passed by this comic store several hundred times and I only noticed it today because it had a free comic day banner over its door. When I asked how long they have been around the man there was so surprised he said about 16 years. Then he went on to site all the things they have been involved with like the Lilac festival etc. The store is quite narrow and although it seems small it appears that it has a little bit of everything, the back area carries action figures; there is some Mange and just a small amount of Animé. There are great action figures bordering the top of shelves in the front area, ranging at about 200 bucks, they must be collectible. Of course there are the classic Marvels and DC’s and the man working there knows his products so although this isn’t as big as other comic stores, it is definitely worth a visit.

I’m not an expert on comic books or comic book stores, what with being a closet geek(and not a very big one at that — I’m a sucker for interesting pictures). That being said, I’ve always liked the look of Redd Skull when I walked by and the inside is even better. I think it is every 15 year olds wet dream — floor to ceiling comic books, knowledgeable staff and that sort of dark atmosphere that is perfect for geeking out. There was a ton of stuff, from graphic novels to manga to your typical comic book, and they can order just about everything for you. I was happy that I went in.
