Specialties

We’re a Calgary-​based crafter of small-​batch ice cream. We serve up ten unique flavours, with two specials and a few sorbets. All can be served in a home-​made waffle cone.

History

Established in 2012.

I’m Billy, founder of Village Ice Cream. The idea for Village actually came to me while sitting on my grandmother’s porch in Montana on an unusually warm day in February. I sat there drowning my sorrows in a bowl of locally made huckleberry ice cream. I was lamenting my failed motorbike trip from Calgary to Rio de Janeiro. I’d hoped this journey was going to pave the way for my life’s purpose, but somewhere near Oaxaca Mexico I decided to pack it in. Life’s answers were just not coming to me.

It was this creamy, rich huckleberry ice cream that calmed my mind and made way for an idea. Was ice cream actually my life’s purpose? Could my favourite treat actually translate into a viable and fulfilling career path?

I returned home with this new calling: to create the most exquisite ice cream to share with fellow Calgarians — a little of the same creamy bliss I had experienced back on my grandmother’s porch.

At Village we’re in hot pursuit of perfection in every detail of our business; from sourcing the best flavourings that go into every batch of our hand made ice cream to searching out an exceptionally talented team of staff. The Village team is truly the foundation of our creative and supportive work environment. And we certainly wouldn’t be Village without you, the Villagers, who brave floods and hail storms and –30 degree weather to come in and slow down and talk and have a taste.

If you say you don’t like Village then you’re lying!
Everyone loves Village and every time I visit there’s always a long line up, satisfied customers enjoying their ice cream, and a great variety of flavours to choose from.
For those who didn’t notice, Village’s waffle cone are always freshly baked right in front of you but of course you’ll be getting one off their cooling rack because who would want their ice cream melting in their freshly baked waffle cone? I know I don’t. Village offers samples of their flavours but only if you ask nicely! So if you don’t know what to get try a sample first but the only downside is that if you don’t make your decision then and there someone can cut you and proceed to move down the line.
Spaces are limited for both parking and seating but don’t worry there’s always parking on the street. As for seating, you can always sit around the streets or you can stand and eat there’s no harm in that!
There’s nothing negative to say about Village and if I did miss something out there are other reviews that could keep you up to speed.
Village Ice Cream is a +1 in my books and of course I will always come back, when I’m in the neighbour hood or when I’m craving for ice cream.

The ice cream here is great. It’s got a clean mouth feel to it while being decadent as ice cream should be. I tried the honey lavender and coconut lime, both were great flavours! The honey lavender was pretty strong though FYI. I went around 2pm on Sunday today and didn’t have to wait in line for half a block! It’s was peaceful and I was served right away. :)

Scrumptious ice cream! I have never tasted salted caramel ice cream as good as this place. It’s kind of hidden in a circle but you won’t miss it as there is always a ton of people. coconut has actual meat in it. It’s not cheap but worth the money and calories.

The icecream here has always been so good. There is a lot of notoriety around the place, but the quality of the icecream is what’s really great. Some of the other icecream shops in the city source their icecream from lower quality vendors, but the quality of the ingredients in the icecream is what really sets Village a part in my books.

Is his the best ice cream I’ve ever had? It could be. Maybe. I’ve eaten a lot of ice cream over the years.
Sure there’s a lot of fanfare/​hype over this place and the wait line can be atrocious, but there’s no denying they make excellent ice cream.
Actually the wait line moves pretty fast, so the only real negative to this place is its prices: $ 7 for two scoops ($ 8 for a waffle cone). That’s the only reason I can’t give them 5 stars. I’d like to think that’s the real cost in making the ice cream but at those prices it’s hard not to think they might be cashing in on their notoriety just a little bit.

Pretty sure everyone loves Village, because I do! There are times that I’ve planned it so I can hit up Village on the way to somewhere, and sometimes on the way home when I’m close by!
The wonderful smell of freshly baked waffle cones welcome you once you make it in the door. No matter how busy they are, they always offer samples especially their ever changing flavor of the month! My go-​to flavors are the toasted coconut and earl grey (seriously tastes like a frozen London Fog!)
There’s a reason this place is lined up out the door on hot sunny days and on blistering cold winter days — it’s that good! They have dairy free options (coconut nut milk based) and you can also get pints to go, so really you have no excuse to not try Village!

Great experience.
It’s a funny place to visit as a tourist at night because it is in this quiet part of downtown and you think you’re lost… when all of a sudden you’re found!
Warm lights illuminate the off-​street location and a loose lineup of friendly people (well, we’re all about to have ice cream, so…) makes you feel like you’re in the know and about to share something special… which you are!
Sample as many flavours as you’d like. I fell for the seasonal (limited time) Spiced Banana Coconut Milk (real banana!) and my true love was the Salted Caramel. The only one I wasn’t fond of was the Coffee, but that has more to do with the local coffee they use as the base, which isn’t my favourite. The Earl Grey ice cream was tempting but I’be saved that for another time. Staff were patient and pleasant as we got to the counter, sampled and ordered.
The waffle cones are fresh and honestly the best I’ve ever tasted. I ordered 2 kid size scoops in a cup with the cone on top.
There are a couple seats inside and seats outside.

Nothing beats this for accessible, delicious ice cream. A great variety of flavours (unique and classic, alike), hand-​made waffle cones and the employees get to play their own music. It’s really a hub for a community. Quick service, decent prices.
Seriously check this place out for your own sake. Get the cardamom ice cream. Spice? In ice cream? Sweet.

Everybody has already raved about the ice cream at this place enough and if it hasn’t convinced you to try it yet… well… I’m sorry for your loss. The workers there probably all have carpal tunnel and if you don’t go then they are suffering for naught! Although if you do go they would get more carpal tunnel-​y???
My favourite flavours are Phil and Sebastian coffee as well as vanilla. Flavours I was not crazy about cardamom and mango. Earl Grey is very subtle so you have to be in a certain mood for it. The sundae is also pretty good, although I prefer plain ice cream most of the time. This location is somehow more delicious than the other one; I’m sure it’s all in my mind but just take my word for it.
As a tip for getting the cone: ask for it in a cup and get the cone on top! That way you can distribute cone: ice cream ratio better as well as prevent any loss of precious ice cream! As a random anecdote: once my friend got one cone on bottom and one cone it top and it was hilarious and also awesome.

You know what? I actually like the location of this place. It feels like it’s a secret hidden gem even though there are always people there. They have their few permanent flavours (um hello cardamon) and then they have flavours that they swap out in rotation. You can sample 1 or all of them if you like! They definitely don’t skimp on the size of the scoops and 1 scoop can sometimes look like 2. Their hot fudge sundae is really good and I like that you can swap out the flavour of ice cream for something you want instead of vanilla. And then I added a waffle cone on top because I can.
If you ever go anywhere in the city where they offer ice cream as part of their dessert, it’s probably from Village, it’s that good.

It’s creamy, delicious, fresh and perfect. It’s locally made and there’s always a line. It’s Friday afternoon and I went with two coworkers at 2 PM. It was only a short line, about five people ahead of us, which is perfect because it gave us time to make our important flavour decisions.
I chose a double scoop in a cup of chocolate and maple pecan. Amazing. Rich but not too rich, dense texture, so creamy.
It’s a trendy little beautiful ice cream shop. I feel like they’re always cute little puppies outside with their owners on a leash. The staff is young and friendly and smart.
I’m the ice cream is the best. I have said this to people and they turned to me and say «what’s the big deal? It’s just ice cream. I’ve had better.» But seriously?! Where have you had better ice cream? And they never give me an answer. They just say… Like another city or something.
It’s my favorite ice cream in the city. I will always love it. I hope it never changes. It’s a cute lovely ice cream shop downtown in a quiet location.

Their unique flavours are what will encourage your regular visits. Village Ice Cream has seasonal flavours, as well as their signatures. My go-​to flavour has become the Earl Grey (which I believe gets put on a rotation?) & if you’re a fan of the classic girl guide’s cookies, try the «Guide’s Mint»!
Some will argue it’s pricey for ice cream, but this spot is the only ice cream shoppe that currently brings such unique flavours to ice cream. My tip: try two flavours per visit by grabbing two kid’s scoops — it’s plenty of ice cream.
Hopefully they’ll expand to a more centralized and bigger location soon.

You’d never notice this place was there — there are no signs on the street nor much urban traffic /​other shops in the area, but if you happen to peer into a small parking lot in an alleyway off a dead end street, you’ll stumble upon this gem and be glad you did. Servers were friendly and good about giving samples, there was at least one vegan options with coconut milk, and a mix of fruity and creamy ice cream. I particularly liked the coffee, and cranberry ginger flavored ice cream — flavors were vibrant and scoops were more than generous. They were huge! Definitely a great place to visit when a sweet tooth craving hits!

I am an ice cream fiend. Regardless of season, I usually have ice cream every day courtesy of Häagen-​Dazs.
Village Ice Cream is such a treat. They have certain flavours that are always on the menu such as vanilla bean, melted chocolate, guides mint, maple pecan, P&S coffee, london fog and toasted coconut, along with certain seasonal flavours. I love almost all of the flavours — they are very creamy. The best part is, the waffle cones are freshly made!
There’s also a selection of pints available to purchase so you can enjoy their ice cream at home too.
Line ups in the summer can be quite long so be prepared to wait!

Yeeeeeeeeeeeehaw, its Stampede at Village Ice Cream! How cool is it for them to partner up with the amazing Jelly Modern Donuts and come up with a Stampede Sundae?!! When I saw their post on Instagram, I knew what I had to do.
I showed up at Village and there was a little line, which was okay because I could smell the fresh waffle cones which kept me occupied. The lined moved quite fast because those Village scoopers are on point. I ALWAYS get the waffle cone with salted caramel but since Stampede is here, I decided to go out of my comfort zone and go with the sundae ;) I mean, it is only here for 10 days out of the year.
So what is the Stampede Sundae you ask? Well, it is a scoop of ice cream, ANY flavor (s) of your choice. You can also do two different flavors in the one scoop (I got half vanilla, half strawberry), it is then covered with some delicious cream cheese frosting with two mini Jelly Modern cinnamon sugar doughnuts sitting on top THEN topped with some airy whipped cream and finished with a cherry on top!
It was gone in a blink of an eye ;) That is all.
ps. Just a delicious thought… you should buy a waffle cone, crumble it up and put it in the sundae OR break the waffle cone into pieces and use it as a spoon. BOOM — You’re welcome.

I am VERY picky with my ice cream. I love ice cream. It is without a doubt my favorite type of dessert.
If i was on death row i would most likely pick ice cream as my last meal.
While on a trip to Calgary, after a very heavy meal, my son suggested we go for dessert at Village ice Cream. Him and his Gf were talking and ranting about this ice cream. We were all so full that my sister and i declined their invitation but went with them to get their ice cream.
We get there and i kid you not, there was a line that was like a block long. Really hipster cool group of people. Young people, not so young people, kids, dogs, you name it!
I have never seen anything like that for an ice cream place.
My son an GF get in the line and my sister and i decided to wait in the car. Then i needed to go to the restroom so while walking inside the place i see the flavors: sea salted caramel, pistachio, etc… not boring vanilla and chocolate!
So as im coming outside i run into them and wish them good luck on that line. It was insane!
so i got back to the car with my sister and waited for them. His Gf was nice enough to bring me a cup pf ice cream anyway. I tried it and OMG! Believe the hype!
it was delicious! I gave my sister a taste and she was like: wow! that is good ice cream!
Long story short, we ended up eating the whole thing even though we were stuffed from dinner.

Was told this is the «best ice cream in Calgary», and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Location was a little difficult to find for a visitor to the city, but some exploring never hurt!
A very cute little shop with benches out front for you to sit, soak up the sun, and enjoy your ice cream!
They have some standard flavours and seasonal flavours as well, and you are welcome to try them before making your purchase. At $ 5 a single scoop ($ 3 for a kiddie scoop), they give a good amount of ice cream to fill you up!
I decided to go with the flavour that the staff recommended, and that was Everything Mark Loves! Basically salted caramel with praline, nuts, and Nutella! Absolutely delicious and hit the spot without being too sweet (which is a big deal for me).
Definitely a hot spot for those hot days!

The place rocks and the line up on a typical Sunday attest to this fact. A sunny Sunday afternoon was the perfect time to pop in for an ice cream with the family. My kids both picked the melted chocolate. Really good chocolate flavour and creaminess. I went for my favourite Salted Caramel-​literally nirvana in ice cream form. I also opted in for Irish Coffee-​a seasonal selection. Well Ir-​wish it was always available!
So be prepared to wait but also for your taste buds to be knocked out!
