Every year I usually like to clean out the closet to and make my usual yearly donation but this year I wanted to really get my clothing to a specific focus group. My clothing is a bit more urban wear so I thought who else but a Calgary youth shelter. I eventually discovered Wood’s Homes. This is a community outreach service providing shelter, and clothing to youth 12 to 17 in the city. Although the main office is in Northwest the outreach service is right smack dab on 7th avenue and I thought this is such an accessible place for passersby so it was suggested I bring my items directly to this location. It is difficult to stop anywhere downtown so thankfully there is an alley drop off area. A staff member was waiting for me outside thte door and kind enough to assist me with my 4 garbage bags. The motto of Wood homes is «We never say no. We never give up. We never turn anyone away» There is a section in their website that is a «how to» for youth to come to their place for shelter, it reassures them they are safe and they have come to the right place for support. The woman I talked to reassured me that all my clothing would be distributed right away and go directly to the youth drop ins, if someone fits these pair of shoes and wants them then it is theirs to have. If anyone out there in Unilocal would like to donate their clothing and useful items to this cause I highly recommend that you do. Please call them first to let them know you are coming.
