I am originally from the east coast where the best fish & chips can be found. There are places back home that have a fish & chip shacks right at the wharf and talk about fresh fish, lobster, scallops, clams… I could go on and on. After living out here for the past nine years, I really missed a platter of fish & chips. All other places I have tried out here, used a batter that was never like back home. Soggy, or just blah… not crispy or tasty. Walking by one day, hungry, so I thought I would try Austin Fish House. OMG!!! I thought I was back in Shediac New Brunswick! The fish and batter was unreal! Fries! YUM! My takeout order was wrapped up in newspaper(just like home). I cannot tell you how many orders I have placed after my first experience. Austin Fish House in the BESTINTHEWEST!!! For those that wonder… wrapping in newspaper is tradition and these guys stick with the old fashion way. They wrap their orders in chinese newspapers…(lol)…(first wrap is clean paper… your fish does not touch the black print). Never in my mind would I ever think that a chinese take out could make the best fish & chips, just like in the Maritimes!!! AWESOME!

The food came out fast and hot. Their coleslaw has real mayo and nothing was salty or over seasoned. Their homemade iced tea was also very good. The fish batter was crispy but personally would have liked a bit thicker fish(therefore more moist fish). Overall good meal, generous servings and friendly service. Not sure how we drove by the plaza so many times and never noticed this place but we would definitely return.

We live down the road from the little hole in the wall, and have driven by multiple times. Maybe 100. Do not underestimate this little run of the mill looking fish and chips place. Once we saw all the good reviews we decided to try, WORTHIT! For someone that doesn’t eat fish and chips much, it was really good. Not too greasy but quite a large portion. I should have only gotten a one piece, it’s large enough. As said previously, the lady who runs the counter and serves can get really busy with all the takeout orders and tables. But she is so pleasant!!!

Great old fashioned fish and chips. Crispy but not over battered. I’d recommend this place if you’re looking for good seafood. Great lunch specials as well.

We ordered the three piece fish and chips(cod) and it was enough for two adults and some fries left over for another to nibble on. We went for take out. The fish is great and the potions huge! They use a crispy batter … reminded me a little of tempura. Adored the coleslaw but then I’m a veggie person. Chips were great as well especially when you douse them in malt vinegar. This is not a fancy place hence the decision to do take out. We did not have to wait long considering there was a line up and only three people working; two in the kitchen and one server who also dealt with the phone in orders and take out orders. She was kept very busy. We were there at the height of dinner time … 6ish pm. Yes, I would highly recommend this place.

Excellent fish and chips. My fiancée finds it a tad greasy but I don’t. They use good quality fish. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable, even moreso if you get their daily special. It’s a little odd that tartar sauce is NOT included with your order and you have to buy it on the side. I have tried some of the other items on the menu. Their fried chicken isn’t bad. They make it fresh so it takes 20 minutes. The batter is nice and crunchy and the chicken is juicy but they need to season it more. I found it a little bland. I’ve even tried their chow mein. It’s not bad… nothing special so I would never go out of my way to order it. The cooks in the back are Chinese so I think that’s why that stuff is on the menu.

Get a Cesar salad and halibut for your girl friend and a halibut and fries for you to share. Really good Fish and Chips… about the best I have ever had.

I was in the neighbourhood for an appointment yesterday and hunting around for food around 3 pm… luckily for me, the lunch special(1-pc cod & chips plus a drink for $ 5.99!) was still on. Located in a non-descript strip mall on a street filled on both sides with non-descript strip malls, when you walk in, you are confronted by a giant menu above the counter with various fried items and combos. As I was on my own, the lunch special was the only way to go! The server, as mentioned by S L., is very friendly and absolutely was doing her best. She sat down to eat her lunch shortly after I got my food and I felt badly because she kept getting interrupted by customers. Never did she stop smiling and being friendly. I found the décor pretty funny, dialled way back on the retro dial indeed with a giant pastel-coloured ocean mural on one wall. There are lots of tables and it’s no-frills. Surely if I lived nearby, this would be a regular stop for me for takeout. It’s probably not worth going out of your way but the cod was nice and lightly battered and the chips were solid, though not as starchy as I’d like. Portions are big! If you’re big-box shopping at the Coquitlam Ikea or on United Blvd, drive up the hill because this is probably better food than you can get along Lougheed Hwy(I’m no expert but I’m guessing from the chains I see along there). One funny thing that happened was that one woman set off a domino effect of ice cream eaters. It seemed like she was a regular who worked in the neighbourhood and she came in for a strawberry double scoop cone. Several other people saw her walking down the street on a hot day with it and streamed in for their own. Because I couldn’t see myself returning unless I was right in the area, I’m going to say it’s a solid, SOLID3-star, a-okay(really one of those times when I wish half-stars existed). If you like fish and chips and live in Coquitlam, definitely give it a try.

This place has taken a fish and chips shack as far as it can go. Very good food and the Service is even better

The servers are very friendly. I can tell that they strive to serve their customers the best they can. While I was eating there, I saw a lot of regular customers order take outs too. My girlfriend and I ordered 2~4 pieces dinner combo with cod and halibut for $ 24.99. 4 large pieces of fish, large bucket of fries and a large fresh make coslow showed up. Honestly, that’s a portion for 3 adults or 4 girls. Pretty good value. The place doesn’t have any fancy decoration. It’s like some old fashion eating place. However, the food is good and price is very reasonable. Atm, they have ayce on tue, wed and sun for $ 11.99. Seems like a great deal for me. Haven’t tried their ayce yet. Would love to check it out though. Part of their menu have some Chinese food. I just feel it’s kind of funny to see that at fish and chip place. I wonder if anyone would order any of those there. ^_^

Oh my goodness. so Yum! I am starting to love this joint for take out food. It is quite enjoyable to get your fish n’ chips all wrapped up in newspaper, go home, unwrap it and just enjoy eating it directly from the wrapping. Who needs plates and cutlery. This is to be done old school. finger food. Just squirt some ketchup on to the paper and enjoy dipping your fish or chips in your ketchup or in the tartar sauce provided. My only dissapointment was last night when I got home and there was no tartar sauce included in the package. A sad girl I was. Next time i will just make sure to ask for confirmation that the tartar sauce is in the package.

There is retro and there is Austin Fish & Chips. This place turns the retro knob all the way to 11 so know this before heading in. I can’t recommend this place for a romantic night out, well unless you are in love with 1960’s décor created in the 80’s. Looks aside this place does deliver where it counts, it’s called Austin Fish & Chips and it delivers on the name. Huge portions of fish with token coleslaw on the side. I had the halibut and it was very good considering the price. I’m sure i’ll be back here but next time I think my order will be to go, I actually have a weak spot for fish and chips wrapped in paper.

Looking for fried fish, and in this neighbourhood, come to this place. The place may need some redecorating, from the white walls, to the fake funky water painted to add style that this is a seafood restaurant, but it is what it is, fish and chips. It sometimes feels like an outdoor shack but you are having fastfood, oily fast food. You get some real big pieces for the price, and if you sit in, they usually have on some occassions, the AYCE special for under $ 10. There is not much parking in the lot, and you cannot park on Austin, but usually this area is not that busy.
