Great place. Usually have to wait 15 – 20 min to get seated. Pretty authentic Korean-style Chinese food. One of my favorite spots in Coquitlam.

It’s always a good sign to see lots of Korean people eating at a Korean Chinese restaurant. I would recommend getting the family meal, plenty of food to share for 4 adults and probably the most value for your money. The sweet and sour pork is very tasty and not your standard Chinese style version. It’s definitely worth trying the place out.

Our lunch at Hee Rae Deung recently, was a first-time visit for us. We arrived just a couple of minutes after the restaurant opened at 11am. One table was occupied, and the restaurant filled with diners rather quickly, and was totally-full, with a few people waiting for tables, before the noon-hour arrived. We were showed to a booth-style table, and promptly provided with menus, and a pot of tea. As first-timers to the restaurant, and type of cuisine(Korean Chinese), we requested some assistance from our server with the ordering — it was decided that one of the combos would be a good and best choice, and would allow us to ‘experiment’ a little, and try a few dishes to share. What we ordered: Combo ‘C’ — three dishes(meat, seafood, and noodle), priced at $ 44.90 — our server assured us(a threesome) that we had ordered enough food, and we took her advice. And when the dishes arrived, were sure glad we had done so — the individual servings were very large in size — family-size portions. She saw the ‘wow’ expressions on our faces when the first dish arrived! This combo consisted of the following three dishes: — meat — Tang Su Yuk — sweet & sour fried pork. The pork was lightly-battered, crispy on the outside, and very sweet, moist, and tender on the inside. What I really liked was that the sauce itself was on the plate, under the pile of pork, not mixed into and on the pork — leaving the sauce to use and enjoy as one desired(in contrast to so many restaurants that stir and spread their sweet & sour sauce over, and through the food — that’s ok, if you like their sauce, but not, if you do not). With this presentation, you were able to choose how much you wished to use — kudos! It was a large, so well-prepared, and presented meat dish. And tasty too! — seafood — Pal Bo Chae — spicy mixed seafood & mixed vegetables. It looked good, tasted good, and we left nothing on the plate! Heh, some of the seafoods were a touch tough, and definitely required some chewing, but well-worth the effort for the taste rewards. We really enjoyed this dish! — noodle — Family Ja Jang — large black bean noodles with seafood, vegetables & pork. Our reaction to this dish was — too much sauce, and for me, too much onions. We did enjoy the noodles, and picking out the tasty seafood pieces, and some of the veggies. But our conclusion — it would not be a dish we would order again. We had a great first-time experience — liked the ambience, thought the food was well-prepared & presented, and tasty, and the staff friendly, and accommodating. Saw some great looking soups when there — suspect two or three of them will be on our table when dining there the next time — and looking forward to that! *edit to add a small update* — the leftovers taken home(some noodles and pork) and eaten the next day were sure good! The noodles & sauce sure seemed to really enjoy their time in the fridge, and when re-heated, with the pork, made for a very tasty dinner!

This was my first time having Korean food and I ordered what a friend ordered which was the Black Bean Soup. Amazing food. We sat down, were served tea and order taken almost straight away. A few minutes later they gave us a huge bowl of food which smelt amazing. This dish specifically really doesn’t look very nice, being so dark and almost bland, but it tasted amazing. For less than $ 7 I had enough food for a big meal and a small amount of leftovers. The staff were very friendly and I will be going back here next time I am passing. Can’t say enough good things about the food here.

This is my goto jjajjangmyun chinese korean restaurant now. The noodles really shine. The texture is a perfect blend of chewy and slurpee. The tangsooyook is made with good chunks of pork as opposed to globs of batter surrounding fatty meat bits.

My first place I would go for since it is near my school but it isn’t my best Korean food place. I usually get Black Bean Sauce Noodle here and it is ok but too much onion. But my best girlfriend(who is crazy for Korean foods) says she doesn’t like it. The chicken cutlets of Combo A was so sweet and the soup wasn’t good.

Hee Rae Dung Korean Chinese Coquitlam 喜來燈 is a small homey Korean restaurant located in the same plaza as RBC and Extra Foods. This restaurant is quite popular amongst the Korean community and it was my Korean friend’s mom whom highly recommended it to us. Hee Rae Dung features a lot of casual home cooked dishes which you will find a lot of similarities to Northern China Cuisine and Korea. Prices here are expensive with entrees $ 15+ — however given the portion size it is forgiven. Service is friendly and prompt but it also helped that my friend speaks Korean. Hee Rae Dung has a lot of family combo dinners with a variety of noodles, stir fry, soups, etc. This is not a Korean BBQ restaurant, do don’t expect grills at your table. We ordered Combo A $ 26.90: Tang Su Yuk, Jjam Bong, Ja Jang Myun and added Yang Jang Pi platter. Since portions are fairly large. Don’t go crazy and over order. Yang Jang Pi 24.40: Seafood, beef, vegetables, clear glass noodles with spicy mustard sauce. This platter has a lot of variety and the presentation is quite pretty. You need to mix everything together like you would a salad. I think this looked much prettier than it tasted. It was sort of bland. More onions, noodles and shrimp would better justify 24.40. Ja Jang Myun: noodles with black bean sauce, onion, and pork. This is similar to Zhajiangmian 醡醬麵 in Northern China but not in South China. This Ja Jang Myun has a lot of sauce and personally I would have preferred something drier. The flavors were mild with a touch of sweetness. Thankfully they noodles were chewy and not soggy despite the sauce. Jiam Bong: Spicy noodle soup with vegetables, shrimp, squid and scallops. Don’t be fooled by the light hue of the soup. This soup has a lot of heat that doesn’t burn you on contact but rather emits slowly and lingers afterwards. Tang Su Yuk 14.40: Sweet and sour fried pork is lightly crispy on the outside. Mildly battered and not drenched with sauce as you would typically seen in a Chinese-Canadian restaurant. The meat inside were not too dry either. Hee Rae Dung Korean Chinese on North Road is a nice casual alternative to Korean BBQ. It tastes much better than Good Friends.

Not the best jjajangmyun but their tangsooyuk(fried pork strip with sweat and sour sauce) is okay-good.

Hard to find quality authentic Korean Food in BC after living in Toronto for 5 years. I would consider this place excellent, wholesome home made style Korean chinese food. Specializing in Jjambong(spicy seafood noodle soup), Jajang myun(black bean noodle) and sweet and sour pork/chicken… Have not tried the other dishes because that’s not what they are popular for. When a Korean place specializes in very few dishes and you are the only non-Korean person there, that place is legit! Look around and see what everyone is there for, if in doubt. There are no free korean side dishes because this is not that type of restaurant. Banchan is served when there is mainly rice, bulgoki, galbi or soup dishes, like at Korean bbq. Combo B is perfect for my bf and I since i love jjampong and he loves jajang myun and it also comes with a sweet and spicy fried chicken dish, all for ~$ 30(good price for the quality). Expect to bring home leftover chicken since the combo is massive. Oh yah, and please do not be misinformed. This is NOTNEWFUSION of Korean and Chinese. This type of Korean Chinese cooking has been going on for a loooong time and can be found in very rural areas of korea. I recently went to Jeju island and found a tiiiny hole in the wall that served exactly this style only. Taiwanese owned and in business for decades. This is authentic Korean Chinese food. Not faux chinese food. Spoken from a half chinese/half korean =)

Tiny joint but a great place for korean style chinese food. Their dishes are all very tasty and a great place to take your family. The portions and prices are great.

This is one of those Korean/Chinese places where you have a portion of the menu contain Chinese dishes such as Mao Po Tofu rice(a Chinese staple), but cooked Korean style. My issue is that I come to a Korean not to experience fusion, but to experience more traditional Korean food, not faux-Chinese food which I would be going to an actual Chinese restaurant for. The Jap Chae was merely average(had much better elsewhere), and the Korean signature spicy fried chicken wasn’t spicy at all, and had a bit of an dirt-like aftertaste. Seems to me that the other Korean patrons there ordered the black bean rice which I suppose must be the popular item for the place. This place seems more of a café than an actual restaurant. The little mini-Korean dishes like kimchi, potatoes that you would normally see at a Korean restaurant were not served here, which was disappointing. Come to think of it, the entire plaza that this restaurant sits within, seems to be more on the rundown side, with many of the businesses around either closing down or being bought out. Maybe it’s a bit of a red flag. But this just isn’t the place I was looking for.

**4.5 stars** Hidden gem, hidden in a plaza next to Insadong. You know it’s good when you turn into a few wrong plazas before finding it and when there isn’t any English on the sign(but if you look closely their name is there). Amazing food. Amazing value. Combo B for under $ 30 gives you a massive bowl of jam bong, ja jang myun and the biggest plate of tang su yook(sweet and sour fried pork). They tout themselves as Korean food with a Chinese twist or is it the other way around? In any case, the jam bong and ja jang myun were very authentic Korean and very flavourful, loads of onion and garlic just the way I like it. The four of us just completed a 4 hour hike and this combo more than filled us up… we actually had trouble finishing it! I cannot eat Korean food anywhere else in the Vancouver area now. Must. Come. Back. They even take more than just cash. Btw, it’s in the RBC and Extra Foods grocery store plaza.
