Used to be great, but in the last several years it’s turned to a disgrace. Rude, irritable staff who act like they are overburdened by a restaurant devoid of anyone but me and them. Ever since I began going there in the early 90’s they offered a free can of pop with take-out orders over $ 20(before tax). Then, after the change happened, I picked up a $ 50 order and inquired about the free cans of pop and the employee curtly responded«we don’t do that anymore.» Well, okay. I guess that was part of the new, horrendous administration, to do away with that pleasant bonus. But here’s the thing, if you no longer honour that policy, MAYBEREMOVETHETEXTONTHEFRONTOFEVERYTAKE-OUTMENU, ANDTHEMENUTAPEDTOYOURENTRANCETHATSAYSYOUSTILLDO!!! Seriously, it can’t be that hard to change, you’re obviously still printing new paper take-out menus. I placed the order with my friend who’s a lawyer, and bragged about their great food, service and free pop policy, and was let down when we found it had all gone to heck. He mentioned that it’s actually false advertising and a complaint could be filed, or even greater action. Yeah, it’s just a couple sodas, but it’s a policy that they willingly choose to lie about. I guess because, the customer is always wrong, especially for taking you at your own word? In summation, I say if you want good Chinese food, Wok on by J’s and head up Austin ave towards Mariner for Sun Star Restaurant. They have great prices, wonderful Chinese food, and staff who are always sweet, never sour. Autobots…egg roll out!

Packages of pop piled up on the floor, as well as multiple commercial calendars on the walls added to maps and family pictures making up for the ambience, and a rambling heater/AC for background sound complementing the TV news channel on. Service was quick, although it was very quiet for clients when I went there. Food was OK, 7 pieces of chicken in my sweet and sour pork lunch special(I felt a little bit like having an Ikea meatball, where they count the pieces on your plate). They do have a nice selection of lunch menu /specials, including either noodles or rice with your choice of main. They are also licensed, advertising cold beer and wine. Not an upscale restaurant, but ok for a quick bite.

The food is decent enough but the décor and the service leave something to be desired. I typically get takeout from here as the restaurant doesn’t seem to have had any kind of makeover in the last 20 years. The woman who runs the til doesn’t seem to have much passion for the business. Once, they got my order wrong, I called them to tell them and they just said they’d add more meat the next time I come in. Really? That’s your response to screwing up my order? I like the food but things like that make me choose other places(that are within half a block walking distance of it) ahead of them most of the time.

Why is this restaurant so badly reviewed? Its been around since i was a kid and they have friendly staff, a family business. Its not the fanciest stuff in the world but its good food for the price, the set dinners are good take out fare. If you live in the area, check it out and try something not super typical and I am sure you wont be disappointed

It’s a bad sign when the chicken in the chicken chow mein resembles chopped up, canned chicken. Besides friendly, warm service, J’s wok had nothing going for it. A typical canadian-style Chinese food place.
