Visited Maryvale Moon café yesterday as I had purchased a coupon through Coastmart — love coupons and deals. It is a brightly decorated with art and quite comfortable. There was open mic going on which was kind of neat. I ordered quiche and my friend ordered the Mac & Cheese. The quiche was oversized which some would love but not I. My friend found the Mac & Cheese overpowered with large chunks of onion. It was large portions for about $ 5 per item so prices are good if that is what you are looking for. We also had chocolate cupcakes for desert and I give them a thumbs up — they were good.

Today I stumbled upon this brand new café in the old Village Pasta location on Waverley Rd. It’s been open for a few weeks, but the signs apparently just went up in the last day or so, which caught my attention. What a lovely spot! It is a quirky, colorful, comfortable and welcoming space. Fun art lines the walls, and scrumptious-looking food fills the deli case. You can tell a lot of heart went into creating this place. I walked in the door and was immediately welcomed in and ushered over to the deli case so I could drool at the options before me. I snapped a few shots with my cell, and the proprietor showed me around — even taking me into the bathroom to see the mural she painted on the walls. They were packing up a cake to send off to a customer and even opened up the box to show me and let me take a pic of the gorgeous looking chocolate cake with strawberries on top. I chose a single serving size of the veg and chickpea salad for $ 4-ish, but the potato salad looked equally amazing, as did the lasagna and. well pretty much everything. There were maybe 3 or 4 salads and 2 or 3 pasta options. Not sure if this was their usual selection, but as I was there 30 mins before closing on the eve of a long holiday weekend, I suspect it may have been a tad limited. I’ll obviously have to go back to find out! The single serving take away container is quite generous, and it was filled to the brim. Easily enough to make 2 meals out of it. My salad was fresh, tasty, and packed with a large variety of vegetables. Garlicky, but not obtrusively so. Now, half of the display case is filled with baked goods — mostly cake/cupcakes. Um — if you’ve read some of my reviews or know me at all, you’re probably well aware of my love affair with cake. This place is literally 2 mins away from my house. Danger. Oh the danger. Everything looked so good. But they had large pieces of chocolate mousse cake that looked so amazing I’m sure I would cry if I left without one. Seriously. When I took it home, I literally had to fight my kitty for it. She was very enamored with it and dragged the plate away from me. And let me just say… OH. MY. GOD. Two layers of moist chocolate cake separated and topped with the most amazing thick chocolate mousse, which is made with organic coffee, cocoa and cream. You get a hunk of cake for $ 4-ish. None of this silly sliver business. I didn’t try their organic coffee this trip but will go back for it next time. I’m so excited to have this option right by my house! Oh, and when I stopped in to the convenience store in the same plaza, the cashier noticed my cake and commented that she goes to Maryvale Moon everyday for lunch. She tries something different each day and has never been disappointed. She highly recommends the enchiladas — just thought I’d pass it along!
