A 65,000 square foot facility in the heart of downtown Edmonton complete with a full gymnasium, 25m lane pool, warm water pool, hot tubs, steam rooms and full fitness services including a Workout Centre, fitness studio and cycle fit studio. Over 70 drop in group fitness classes a week for members to participate in including cycle fit, boot camp style classes, step aerobics, yoga, aqua classes and active older adult classes.

The Workout Centre provides members with free Individual Programs and Member Connect Programs with our certified Coaches as well as one on one personal training, small & large group training and sport team training.

Our aquatics department offers members free swim lessons from preschool aged children all the way up to adult swim lessons.

An underground and heated parkade is available and can be accessed on the east side of the facility via 102 street.

History

Established in 2007.

The YMCA of Edmonton was instituted by an act of Legislature in 1907 three years after Edmonton became a city. The original building officially opened in 1908 and offered a swimming pool, employment bureau, education classes, bible study, a gymnasium, running track, and residence. It was started by a group of prominent Edmontonians like Alex Rutherford and John A. McDougall, who helped raise nearly $ 28,000 to begin construction of a YMCA building. The Edmonton YMCA has grown concurrently with the City of Edmonton, and they have mutually supported each other’s growth and development — including the opening of the Don Wheaton Family YMCA in November 2007.

Since 2007, the YMCA of Edmonton has extended services to Grande Prairie and other communities in the Edmonton Capital Region and provided administration services for the Wood Buffalo YMCA in Fort McMurray. To reflect this, the YMCA of Edmonton transitioned to a new name in 2013, becoming the YMCA of Northern Alberta.

Great gym, love the fact that included in the membership, a personal trainer will create a fitness program for you to follow if you so choose. Decent amount of equipment and a small track upstairs, and a variety of drop in classes. There’s also a gymnasium and a pool. I love that your gym card double as a locker key so you don’t have to bring your own lock.
The only reason they don’t get five stars is because I find the monthly membership price just a tiny bit too expensive for the size of the gym. Definitely worth it if you go 3 to 4+ times a week and utilize all they have to offer!

This downtown location is bright, clean, and the staff were fairly friendly. I had my child signed up for swim lessons and because it was the most convenient location I stuck with it. The first part of the lessons were fantastic, but as he moved on to the next level, I noticed things weren’t as good. I had some concerns with the new instructor and by the second set of lessons, I noticed the new staff I wasn’t familiar with really not that good. They hung around and chatted with co-workers, rather then making they’re safety walk throughout. The life guards on duty should and are probably aware of the swim schedule throughout the day, yet once my child’s lessons began, they weren’t even prepared. The pool wasn’t lowered, and each class my child would lose 5−7minutes of swim time. Remember, this is only a 30minute class, so seriously, this should not even happen. It’s also bad enough that it’s every class and not just the occasional day here and there. These life guards and staff should really be on top of they’re game. Your getting paid for your job and as a paying customer/client it would be nice to my child have full advantage of what I’m paying for.

I had a membership here for about 2 years just before turning 25. It is an affordable membership… IF you’re under 25. We aged another year our membership jumped up by over 50% so me and my wife looked elsewhere.
It is a very comprehensive gym, with access to spin studios, the pool, hot tub, weight rooms, etc. it was great to be able to change up your workouts all the time.
The facility is clean and bright.
One tip for the place is that the trainers will actually set up a work out program for you — FREE OF CHARGE! I would meet with one of them once every 2 – 3 weeks and he would set up a new program for me. It was by far the best part of the membership.
You also get free parking underground outside of the normal business hours and you get to pay a reduced rate of you do have to pay.
All in all a pretty good place if you can afford the price tag.

Went in for tour, came out with 3 free visits. Only complaint is gettin out of parkade was a pain you need a credit card after paying in tbe lobby.

You can always count on this gym and it’s change rooms being super clean. The staff are friendly and this location is so convenient for those of us who work downtown. There’s a large variety of classes available everyday and several over lunch hour. I never get bored with the options. I’ve also taken advantage of their fitness coaches which are available for aimed number of appointments, included in the gym membership. This was very valuable as I learned just how hard I could push myself.
I’ve never liked gyms but this YMCA has changed my mind.

This facility is nice. I’ve only really used the pool, which is ok in size, not big like kinsmen, and is not too busy so I can do my lane swimming. Prices are reasonable and the front desk staff is super friendly and helpful. Bathrooms/change rooms are squeeky clean, which is really nice. Plus the women’s washrooms have blowdryers! Awesome for the winter. I like this place and would definetely consider buying a gym membership here.

Still love the Don Weaton YMCA. The only real draw back is that they do not have any squash/racket ball courts here. It would be nice to have, but it has everything else. There are fewer families and kids at this location than at other YMCAs because it is downtown. This is welcome news for me! It’s not that I have anything against kids, it just means more access to the use of facilities like the pool and gym. Also kids tend to bump into me.
I quit my Calgary membership to get an Edmonton one. Note that when you get a new membership be sure to bring your «Membership Cancellation Form» that you should of received when you quit your membership in Calgary. It will exempt you from paying the building fee upon renewal. And saving money is usually a good thing!
The service is still stellar. Twila helped me out and he was extremely knowledgeable of what a membership means. Because of her I learned that all drop in classes are free to members except the TRX class. Note that the classes with AOA in front of them tend to be lighter classes geared towards seniors.
Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to work out!

I’ve been a member at the YMCA for a few months now, and I’ve been taking swimming lessons there for a few years. This is definitely my favourite gym downtown, and I find it to be (mostly) more accessible than other gyms.
As part of your membership, you have access to a variety of classes, swimming lessons, ongoing fitness coaching, and of course the standard cardio and weight equipment.
The biggest draw for me here is the pool. It’s cleaner than most of the pools I’ve seen elsewhere in the city, and they have lessons for everyone. Plus, I’m pretty sure it’s the only pool downtown.
The classes are mostly good, although I haven’t tried too many of them. They have a lot of cardio machines, but the weight area is kind of small and cramped, and even at quieter times I’ve had trouble getting on the machines I want. If you’re not sure where to start, they also have coaching sessions where you can get a trainer to create a program for you and walk you through it.
The biggest reason I can’t give them 5 stars is that it seems every other time I’m there, there’s something really frustrating about the change rooms. After work, it can be hard to find a locker. Some of the showers have no pressure and/or no hot water. Leaving work later means I can miss the rush, but it’s still not optimal.
The staff here are great. Definitely the place to go downtown if you’re a first-timer at the gym (but save me a locker).

First of all, I’ve never stepped foot into a gym before, I always felt that being a bigger guy I would feel out of place and uncomfortable while everyone else was extremely fit. Plus I’ve never used exercise machines before, so it was an added layer of awkwardness.
I couldn’t be more wrong about that, when I first stepped into the facility I was very impressed with how well kept and clean it is. I went to the front desk, and being it my first time they gave me three complimentary visits afterwards I can join as a monthly member or pay for drop in sessions. The people at the desk were extremely friendly and I know if I asked for help with any of the machines, they would have gladly offered (I was with my sister for the first time, who is a real fitness enthusiast so that wasn’t necessary).
The change room was incredibly clean, you don’t need to bring your own lock for the locker as you can use your card, a very handy feature. I was there around 5:30p-6:30p on a Wednesday which was prime time, I only spent 30 minutes trying out the different machines, and it was quite busy but there were still many machines available. I was comforted that there were people there of all shapes and sizes, sure their were those muscle-bound types over in the weights section and among the cardio machines, but it wasn’t intimidating. Everyone was focused on their own workouts and most had headphones in, so I didn’t encounter any people who were irritated by my awkwardness! It’s like everything, there’s a bit of a learning curve.
My fitness enthusiast sister was quite impressive with the machines as well, quite world-class and very sturdy. I like how many of them have preset exercises you can choose along with quick start, I’m going to try them out next time I go.
All in all, if you’re like me and you’re hesitant or intimidated about gyms or never been to one ever, this is the place to go. I’m a pretty reserved guy and the environment provided in this gym is extremely comfortable. I wouldn’t know if this place is good if you’re a hardcore fitness enthusiast, probably better to go to one of the other private health clubs, but for me, this place is perfect.

This place rocks!
The location is excellent if you work/live in the downtown area.
The pool area which I used most frequently was apparently newly renovated. I did see a lot of cardio equipment though it was quite busy but it didn’t matter as I am mainly swim.
The showers area is OK as it does get pretty dirty if you go in the evening (the alternate is getting the plus membership as you get access to a separate locker/shower area with free towels).
The swim lanes can get real busy in the evening so beware (I recommend coming just before or after lunch time as its not as busy)
Staff is friendly the icing on the cake is validated parking with free parking in the evening hours (I think up to 3 hours) and a very subsidized rate during day time.
Prices are reasonable as it is YMCA after all.

This is my workout sanctuary. OK I share it with the downtown crowd which includes pretty much every variety of person you can imagine, but this is my standing appointment for me.
It can be challenging to get on cardio equipment at peak hours (noon M-F, after work M-R), but if you can be flexible with your time or what you want to do you can make it work. Mixing things up is good for your workout.
I love the convenience, but wish it was open late on weekends. I miss late night swims like I used to take at Millennium Place.
There are lots of options if classes are your thing, including yoga, aikido, cycle fit, zumba and sport conditioning. I’ve found e yoga classes disappointing, but the cycle fit has kicked my arse.
The equipment has been a problem for the last year or so with frequent breakdowns, but they replaced all treadmills last month and added more bikes. Hopefully the stair climbers are next.

I’ve been a member of the Don Weaton YMCA since October and have been a huge fan of this gym since I stepped foot into the building. They have free underground parking for members after 5pm or a cheaper rate if you park there earlier in the day. When you walk into the building the staff definitely sets the tone by being super friendly. They always say hi and make you feel very welcome. If I ever had a problem with something in the facility I know I could go tell a staff member and they could resolve it.
One of the most important aspects for me in terms of a gym is the amount of classes they offer in the evening. The YMCA has more drop-in classes than any other gym I’ve ever gone too. The instructors are nice and they push you to work harder than normal. I find myself going to drop-in classes all the time instead of working out alone in the fitness center.
In the fitness center, there are lots machines (treadmills, cross-trainers, etc) and they are all brand new. As well the weight area is full of free-weights, other weight machines, mats, etc. You can definitely find lots to do. Even though on weekday evenings the fitness center gets really busy, you can always find a cardio machine and an area to lift some free weights. Its definitely won me over as a member and I will continue recommending this facility to friends and family.

I’ve been a member at the Don Wheaton YMCA for about a year and a half and I love it.
I’ve never been a very athletic person, I don’t really play sports, I never really enjoyed working out, but that has changed since I started going to the Y, which is pretty amazing if you ask me. The facility is still quite new (5 or 6 years I think) and looks it. It is always very clean. The staff are all wonderful, from the front desk staff to the people upstairs in the fitness centre to the class instructors and everyone else I’ve encountered. They always say hi when you come in each day and sometimes strike up a conversation. They seem to be quite familiar with some of the regulars and I like that.
On the main floor there is a swimming pool, a gymnasium where people can play basketball, floor hockey or attend several classes, and some other smaller rooms for yoga and spin classes, as well as the regular change rooms. Upstairs is the fitness centre with all of the cardio and weight machines as well as a track, another room for classes and the Members Plus change rooms. The selection of cardio machines is great — lots of bikes, treadmills, elliptical trainers, a couple of cross trainers and rowing machines. The weight area is equally as impressive, with a really good mix of machines and free weights. There are tons of classes to choose from, all of which are included in the membership price.
Standard membership is $ 61 a month or $ 659 a year. Members Plus is $ 105 a month and they get some added perks. I have a corporate membership, which gives me 10% off. A great thing about the Y is something called the Opportunity Fund, which basically makes the YMCA accessible to anyone even if they can’t usually afford a gym membership. They will take a look at your situation and give you a discounted rate from there. Now, the rate will depend on different factors, but I had a friend who was on EI and had some bills and whatnot get a six month membership for $ 10 a month.
I usually go during my lunch break and it does get pretty busy right around 12 – 12:45pm, but there has never been a time where I couldn’t find a machine to use. I really like going on the weekends as it is not as busy. They have really good hours — 5:30am to 10pm during the week and 7am to 7pm on the weekend and holidays. There is also an underground parkade.

Don Wheaton YMCA has a great gym, great social conscience, and great staff.
The only beef I have is that the place gets too busy over lunch hour with the downtown crowd.
It’s certainly not a gym for the hardcore fitness crowd, but it is a great place to go and get your daily exercise– whether that be weight training, cardio, classes, or gym activities.

Don Wheaton YMCA is a wonderful facility with great staff and fabulous equipment.
From the minute you walk in the door, the staff welcome you. The folks at member services greet you by name with a smile. The more you go the better they get to know you. The various volunteers brighten up anyone’s day with their cheerful enthusiasm.
As a woman, I love that the plus member’s locker room has a private adults only ladies hot tub and sauna. Getting ready for work is a breeze. There’s a set of sinks to brush your teeth (mouthwash and such available) and the a whole two rows of fully lit mirrors and chairs to do your hair and make up. A private sitting area with flat screen, leather furniture and newspapers make it easy to relax while you wait for your friends to finish up their work out.
The yoga classes work your body while helping your mind relax. The variety of classes over the lunch hour make it easy for anyone to take a class during their lunch break.
For kids they have an assortment of programs and drop in classes that help promote healthy living and staying active.
The memberships are a pretty good price and there’s no stigma that you have to be in perfect shape to work out there.

I used to go to this family YMCA location, known as the Don Wheaton YMCA. It’s the newest one in town, and thus has the newest gym equipment. I was never one to work out much, but this gym made it fun and easier for me.
They have a public indoor pool, basketball court, and childcare centre on the main floor. The pool is rarely busy, so my boyfriend and I went a lot in the summer during the extremely hot days. You have to check their pool hours though, because they have a specific schedule for it to accommodate public swimming with family, lane, and member swimming, along with their aqua-fit and aqua jog classes. The basketball court is usually quite busy, with people either shooting hoops or playing badminton if the nets are up.
The gym is located upstairs (there is elevator access), where there is also a studio room for pilates and yoga, and a walking/running track. If you’re using the track, make sure you know what day it is because they alternate the direction each day (you don’t want to run into opposing traffic!).
The gym is fantastic, and my favorite part of the whole facility. I usually spend my time doing cardio, because all the machines there — ellipticals, treadmills, those bike thingys — have individual tv screens. So you can watch your favorite show while you’re burning calories! It actually made working out more fun for me, and it distracts your mind from the burning sensations in your muscles.
Of course, they have weights and resistance training as well, with the usual big mirror where people can admire their muscles bulging. The fitness staff are always on hand, so you can ask them for help if you need it. They also do personal training, if you feel you require it.
Bathrooms are accessible everywhere, and are pretty clean. The changing rooms are spacious and have plenty of lockers. Of course, I can only vouch for the ladies’ locker room, but it’s one of the better ones I’ve seen. They supply a hair dryer and skin moisturizing lotion at the grooming table, in case you forgot yours. The changing rooms are also very roomy.
Membership at the YMCA is pretty pricey though, so I haven’t been able to afford to keep coming here. They do have drop-in and punch-card passes available, but if you go to the gym a lot, it’s better to get the full membership. If you just want to try it out, go to their website and print off their free 3-visit pass, and see if you like it before you buy.
