We’ve been looking for an alternate sports bar to watch the Oilers. It’s nearly impossible to get into Hudson’s on a weekend. The bar has daily beer specials. Big Rock pints for $ 5.00. The food turns out to be pretty good. I had a steak salad and hubs had fish and chips which is the Friday special for $ 10.00. My brother had butter chicken with naan and rice. He liked it. The T.V. we were viewing in the upstairs lounge was fantastic. We liked it so much, we might just reserve this table in perpetuity. The manager was great as we asked him to turn the channel to NHL. He still kept a few screens tuned to baseball. In the Summer months, we enjoyed their sunny outdoor seating. The staff is always fast. It’s a little shabby around the edges and looks just like an English pub.

Visited last week in the hopes of enjoying a nice dinner out with my significant other. Both of us love British food, and we looked into the Unilocal reviews before we went out. Service was less than desirable. Our server didn’t tend to us until about 20 minutes after we arrived and sat down. The place wasn’t particularly busy since it was early on a weeknight, but she eventually made her way to our table to get our drink and food order. She wasn’t particularly attentive, seemed uninterested in serving us or anybody else. Service left something to be desired. The food wasn’t particularly special, average at best. My partner and I shared the Mini Yorkshire Puddings to start, and they were decent. Nothing special. Gravy was okay, the meat wasn’t bad. He had the bangers and mash as an entrée and I had the fish and chips. Both of our main meals were good, but we would have been better off going elsewhere for a better dinner, and higher quality food and service. The food wasn’t extraordinary– I felt as if we could have cooked a better meal at home– mind you, I live with a British family and have been eating home cooked meals all my life, so I may be a bit biased. Overall, if you’re looking for outstanding food and service, save your time and go elsewhere. It wasn’t a particularly poor restaurant and I’m glad that I went to see what it was like, but I know that I most likely won’t be returning.

Stopped for a couple of pints and some eats last Saturday — wonderful to be back on a patio on Whyte after the market! Although the food was good, it was the beer that was the best — is there a better patio beer than Main Squeeze from local brewery Alley Kat?!? Me thinketh not… :)

I’ve been the this location once before and the food was so terrible I never went back. So when we had friends move to whyte they told us that the food had gotten better so we decided to join them for st. pattys day drinks. I had gotten off work late and was starving. We got there around 8pm and the place was still quiet. I love the look of this place and think it’s very cool and unique. The service was good to start, got our first drinks right away and I ordered the sweet potato fries. When my food came to our table by another server, I looked and there were maybe 10 fries on the plate. I asked if that was all I got for an appi and she said it was put in as a side order. No worries, she did come back with the full order. The fries themselves were soggy and not very good but I was so hungry I ate them all anyways. Well after that our server was MIA. It did get busier but the place was hardly full. We saw her giving full attention to smaller tables and ignoring our larger table. Eventually we had to start going to the bar ourselves to get drinks. I had enough by this point and had to go to the till at the bar and wait for out server to acknowledge me to get my bill. She probably hadn’t been to our table for an hr. I hadn’t had service that bad in a very long time.

My boyfriend and I came in to refuel ourselves after an afternoon of shopping during the Unilocal Shops Local event. It’s got kind of a cozy atmosphere and like previous reviewers have mentioned it doesn’t really attract much of the 18 – 25 age group that can sometimes get a little rowdy. The waitress looking after us was really nice and did a great job of keeping on top of when we needed things like drink refills. Also while we are on the topic of waitresses I love that the ones here are properly clothed. I understand the logic behind it but I am still sick and tired of the low cut shirts and barely there skirts you see on some of the girls working at other pubs. We ordered a share platter of 5 of their appetizers and everything on it was delicious. The wings were huge and the deep fried pickles were the best I have had in the city. We both left totally full and at 25 dollars the platter was a great deal! My one and only issue with the experience was the temperature. It was –32 with the windchill today in the city and they had people entering and exiting through the side door to try and decrease the amount of chill working it’s way into the restaurant but I still found it really cold. I usually like to take my coat off during a meal so I don’t get the sleeves in my food but I couldn’t comfortably do that today and looking around I saw lots of others with their zippers still done up. I understand the weather is under nobodies control so I only took off one star but please consider turning up the heat in your lovely pub E&C so I can give you a truly deserved 5 stars on my next visit!

E&C on Whyte is my new go-to when I’m looking for a fun night out on Whyte. under new management, the menu has undergone some exciting changes. We were there a couple weeks ago and The manager had the kitchen bring us out a sample of what they’ve been working on. …lets just say, I was REALLY impressed. Otherwise, I LOVE the stuffed yorkies. They’ve perfected the Yorkshire pudding AND stuffed it with thinly shaved juicy roast beef. E & C staff are some of Whyte Avenue’s BEST. Never stuffy or pretentious, they’re known for hauling out the giant Jenga(seriously…giant Jenga) or beer pong table and joining the patrons for some fun. They seems to hire mature, experienced bar staff. I appreciate the experience, efficiency and attention to providing a great experience. The patio is superb — great for people watching and catches great afternoon sun. They’ve added Karaōke with Smilin’ Jay on Thursday nights which is SO exciting. The room is surprisingly great for sound and the quality of singers is some of the best in Edmonton. This winter, I brought my entire staff to Elephant & Castle for our staff party. The bar reserved the upstairs section for us and kept our experience organized and with fast service. We played beer pong and drank our faces off and had SO much fun. Love it!

One of the better places to go on Whyte avenue for those who do not enjoy the club scene. The service is fairly hit or miss, usually a miss for me, but what they lack in service is made up for with delicious food, cold beer and a great atmosphere. I haven’t tried anything on their menu that I didn’t like so far, for first timers though I definitely recommend the lamb burger.

Good Saturday lunch with Haley! Came here on a Saturday afternoon, I ordered the steak sandwich which was the daily special and a side of mushrooms for a buck, pretty quiet overall but great food. Service was fast and attentive I decided on the steak sandwich, fries and gravy. The fries were fresh, with a salt/;pepper season and the steak done medium, with fresh mushrooms, it was great! They got it right and Haley the server was busy pleasing, and talking to all her customers. I liked the steak special which was 10 bucks! and there seemed to be a lot of kitchen staff with great skills, and care in what they did! I appreciate that! The bathrooms which are located upstairs could use some attending to. The hand soap was empty, and the towel dispenser was literally pulled apart and hanging there. The only men’s bathroom stall had the lock broken or removed from it, so I think some upgrades could be helpful. I had been here before and liked the bar service and food, they have some attentive staff and bartenders. I would go back again. There bangers and mash are a specialty item and they cater to sports fans, with a variety of week day specials. You wont get a bloody Caesar here(that’s with tomato juice), but regular drinks are a plenty. There is also a good choice of draft beer for 6 bucks, and they do have an extensive food menu. The atmosphere is friendly, but not pretentious –its a pub-bar –just go with it and you will eat well Here! Just ask for Haley!

Visit to Edmonton and we decide to eat here straight from the airport. If a place gives me baked beans when i order bangers and mash, it instantly gets a one star! Sorry.

This place is pretty run down and the drink I received was pretty watered down. Why here? There’s so much better you can do on Whyte Ave.

Service was quick and attentive. Ordered battered button mushrooms, steak & chips and yorkshire pudding stuffed with roast beef. Entrés came out within a reasonable amount of time. Steak was not that great, unseasoned, tough and fatty and had a charred taste despite being blue rare. I salted it, then actually dipped it in ketchup to add flavour, it had none of it’s own. The chips were mildly above par, but sparse. The chintzy plate was not worth the $ 18 at all. I was quite disappointed in it. My date’s dish, however was excellent, the roast beef yorkshire was very tasty, the mashed potatoes were excellent. The green beans were not the freshest, but had an agreeable flavour. Her plate was good value at $ 13. After we had finished our plates,(and after two requests), our(starter app!) mushrooms arrived. While there was nothing exceptional about the mushrooms themselves, the sauce accompanying was very tasty with a smooth spicy finish. Unfortunately we were full by then, and could not finish them. I want that sauce recipe. Despite it being a pub on Friday, staff was quick and very personable. Would go there again, but will not order the steak again, for sure.

I had heard that this was a nice pub with good food… So i went there on a lunch date, and was not impressed! There was hardly anyone there, which is fine with me. Its nice to have a nice quiet place to enjoy food and conversation. One would think you would receive top notch service in this case??? Not so! We were brought the app, drinks and meals all at once??? Which is not what i asked for. Then our waitress did not return for an hour? My drink had long since run out, as had my interest in the pub and the company i was with haha. I had a roast beef stuffed yorkshire pudding. The roast beef was old and dry, gravy i am sure came out of a can. Also tried deep fried pickles for the first time. What a let down! I had heard great things about them, but was not impressed. Kinda soggy… So with the combo of crappy service, and less than average food I believe 2 stars is fair…

As a fan of the Elephant & Castle downtown, I figured I’d like this place, too. Well…yes and no. While I like the fact that it didn’t appear to be all that attractive to the usual hordes of annoying 18 — 25 crowd that I normally want to grind into dust beneath my boot heel, the exceptionally loud music was kind of a buzz kill. At times I couldn’t hear my friends talking to me. At one point, a guy whom I took to be the manager stopped by our table(located right by the giant speaker) to apologize for the volume level and explained that since his iPod isn’t «harmonized», the volume fluctuates and they have to adjust it manually. Fair enough, but it was still a pain in my… ears. The food that I sampled while I was there was ok — not bad, but nothing special, either. I would eat here again, but only if I was simply hungry and wasn’t looking to be impressed. I’ll most likely be back, but I intend to sit farther away from the speaker next time.

The Elephant and Castle is an English pub — part of a chain of about 20. It’s an easy fallback whenever you’re dining/drinking with somebody who isn’t terribly adventurous with their taste in food. On weekdays between 5 and 7PM, the E&C offers a number of its appetizers for only $ 5 per plate. As such, I ordered some crispy, dry ribs, which were a little too crispy for my tastes. The dry rub lacked the flavour I desire, but I enjoyed the bbq sauce which they served with it. To add some greens, I ordered a caesar salad. The beer selection on tap is decent, but left me wanting more. But I am picky. Service is friendly as well. When the restaurant mistakenly served me a garden salad, they gladly fixed up a caesar salad for me.

I’ve been here a couple of times and really like this place, especially given its location. Of course, on Friday and Saturday nights, this place is just great but I’ve actually enjoyed visiting this place a lot more on a Thursday night or perhaps even a regular week night. What I like about Elephant & Castle is that they have an unpretentious and traditional Brit Pub thing going(check out the name, for starters) and with regular old pub food, a good selection of beers — not great, but definitely good — with nice music and a good pub atmosphere. On certain nights they have small touring and local bands that perform there, which is actually great. I like low-key live music mainly because it livens up the atmosphere and at the same time doesn’t have the social contract of having to give it a 100% of your attention. I also appreciate the fact that they have two storeys, giving the upstairs area a more private feel, yet with the liveliness of the pub. Upstairs, actually, they have a good pool table and it’s free(or very cheap) to play pool here, provided the table’s free. My main complaint with this place is that the fish & chips, at least on the one occasion I had it, was just about o.k. It wasn’t bad as such, but when it comes to fish & chips, if they’re not really good, one tends to feel that it’s just a lot of fried food that you’re stuffing in for no apparent reason. I would certainly try it again, but will be a little careful to share it with like 4 people.

I’m on the patio right now, enjoying a cold Alexander Keith’s — in a nice, clean glass. Service is a bit slow, but that’s OK. It’s extremely busy; after all it’s the Fringe Festival. Even the servers are on the fringe — trying to keep up with the fast pace of thirsty theatregoers. Edmonton is a different place for 10 days during our first-rate international festival. If I were to put Edmonton on a postcard, stamped and addressed to the rest of the world, it would be a snapshot of Whyte Avenue during our beloved Fringe Fest. I always like coming to the Elephant & Castle. It’s a clean, shiny, softly lit English pub with a wide variety of beer and good pub fare. But during the Fringe it’s a people-watcher’s sample platter, a veritable slice of E-town, humble, oil-rich, real, rugged and oh-so-Canadian. The average age of a person on the patio here is normally about 29, but during the Fringe, which kicked off yesterday in its full glory, the average age is 40+. People who wouldn’t normally hit Whyte Ave. and party on the patios of this hip club-goers main drag are relaxing and catching the vibe, like it was their living room during Super Bowl. My sweetie and I finish our beer, and as if on cue our lovely waitress arrives, flushed and enquiring. Of course, we will stay — for one more round, maybe two… after all, the curtains don’t fall until 2 a.m. and if this world is a stage then I’m convinced we’re players in some of the best theatre in town!

This is not an English pub. It’s an American chain based in Boston. I’m quite sick of this place. Despite what people thing, there are better places to watch soccer on Whyte like O’byrnes or even Hudson’s that have better beer, better service and better food. The food here is horrible. There is nothing up-scale about this place. The TV screens are poorly positioned and old. The bathrooms are in a sorry state. They tried to charge me a dollar more for breakfast than the price on the menu once. I haven’t once eaten here where they actually got my order correct. They treat their patrons rather poorly esp. when it’s World Cup time. If you have to go to a pub to watch soccer, there are other places that have the morning liquor license.

Went here on a Sunday afternoon. They had $ 4 sleeman pints as a drink special which is a great price. They also had family guy reruns on the TV instead of sports which is awesome. Upstairs has a pool table. I saw recently they put out a nice patio for the summer which I’ll be checking out. I like how their patio isn’t on the busy side of the street unlike Hudson’s.

This is a decent pub, serving quality food and cold beer. We stopped in on a Saturday night and it was dead. We enjoyed the meal however, and the service was great. The waitress took my craziness seriously and started mixing two of my favourite beers together to a less than successful outcome. But I drank it anyway. At least she tried… that’s the right attitude to have. The prices were reasonable and we had a pleasant meal here. I recommend giving it a shot.
