Worst experience ever. We came here today for a late dinner around 9pm. My fiancé ordered phở with extra meat in the soup & I ordered chicken & prawn vermicelli bowl. To start when the phở came we asked if the phở had extra meat and the server responded«yes»(there’s an extra $ 4 charge). The server came back bout 5 minutes later and said that the phở didn’t have extra meat so he brought some on the side. By the time the meat came his broth for the soup got cold and when he added the extra raw meat to it — the meat didn’t cook and it made the soup cold. We asked the server to microwave the phở & he took it. About five minutes later he comes back to the table and says he’s «sorry» and they are cooking a new one. Five minutes later they brought back what’s suppose to be «new soup» but when we went to eat it we noticed the hot sauce we added and green sprouts and the noodle we cut up exactly like the soup we sent back. During this entire shit show I was eating my vermicelli bowl just listening to my fiancé complain about the restaurant only to find a long black hair in the noodles I was eating. I let the server know and he took the bowl off the bill. I am entirely shocked at this experience and will never be coming back to this restaurant for sure. This really happened and I would not recommend this place.

The best sushi ever! I’ve only ever done take-out so I can’t comment on the service or atmosphere. The sushi is really amazing though and there’s so Many options, definitely something for everyone.

This used to be my go to sushi place but after my experience tonight I will not be returning. I called in and placed an order for delivery i had to repeat myself 4 times till she understood California roll. Then she took my name thanked me and hung up it was about 10 min later I realized she didn’t take my number or address. So I called back to tell them my address the same girl answered and when I told her address she asked me to hold on a moment witch took 5 min while I could hear her joking with her coworkers. When she finally got back to me she told me the driver was not in tonight so they couldn’t get it to me. What would have happened if I didn’t call back? Disgusted with my service tonight. This company needs to rethink the way they choose their employees.

A Japanese Vietnemese place seems to be a weird combination but this places seems to make it work. Enter through two large gold doors into a small lobby with two large dinning rooms branching off in both directions. The menu holds the typical staples of Japanese and Viet cuisine, and a handful ‘Western’ dishes thrown in to cover all the bases. I had the Bun with Spring Rolls and Grilled Pork(order 220). Strips of grilled pork and two spring rolls come lined up on a pile of vermecelli noddles, bean sprouts and slivered carrots. There is a vinegar sauce that you can mix into the noodles for extra flavour. The pork is marinated on the sweet side. It’s a lighter dish but filling due the fact that there is plenty of pork. Great value for the price. My dinner friends both had phở and they seemed to enjoy their meal also.

I’ve been visiting Maki Maki for few years and I’ll keep coming back. This is a perfect place if you are not sure about what do you want. On the menu you can go from rolls, phở, bento box to burgers. They have a wide variety of food but some reason I’ll always order kind of the same. Rolls, it could be Dragon rolls, Philadelphia rolls, Mexican rolls or if want something else I’ll order a tuna nigiri. The service varies depending on who serves you but in average I’ve always received good attention. Bathrooms are always clean, same as floors and chairs. This restaurant has their own parking lot so even if it is almos a block away from Whyte ave you will always find a parking spot what is perfect for the area. The open at 11 am and close 11pm except for Fridays and Saturdays as they close at 2:00 am! This is a good place for groups(size 12 – 15), families, friends. They also have high chairs for babies. They accept cash, credit or debit. On the left side of the restaurante is the lounge are, they have a bar and couple of tvs if that is what you are looking for. Well, Maki Maki is a place that I’ll come in the near future, so I’ll keep posting pictures of the food or an update if I find something new to share ^_^

Their sushi is overpriced and has next to no fish in it and their vermicelli dishes are ridiculously small and bland compared to every other Vietnamese restaurant I’ve been to. The staff ignore you and are slightly rude. I suspect the only reason this place is still in business is because they’re the only restaurant of this cuisine that is open late. I’ve gotten sick after eating here twice and when you bring your concerns to the owner you get dismissed and ignored. NEVER eat here.

Really amazing phở! Pricier than anywhere else in the city($ 12) up from $ 10 last year but well worth the cost. I think I’ve tried every phở place in edmonton and I stand my ground in heated debates saying maki maki does it RIGHT. Five stars!

I work nearby, so I figured I’d grab some phở to go for lunch. Called ahead and ordered. Grabbed it and went back to the office. The contents were seperate from the broth. The noodles were all stuck together. Threw it all together. It was good but not nearly as good as I’ve had. I have a feeling its better if you eat in. I would go again.

I like Maki Maki and have always had a fairly good time there, and I’d say it’s a fun date spot. But I feel that the rolls are overpriced. Usually for two people, at least the three times I’ve been, the bill comes to $ 80, and I don’t feel the quality of this sushi or the portion sizes live up to the prices.

They have the best Phó! The service was ok, it was a different person every time though.

This is one of our go-to restaurants in the neighbourhood. It is always open and open late. The food is good. If you are in the mood for sushi, but your hubby wants Vietnamese and your aunt only eats meat and potatoes, you can all be satisfied. It is served up fast. The prices are astonishingly low. A giant vermicelli bowl with grilled pork, veg and 2 deep fried spring rolls is $ 10.95. This is one of my «usual» dishes. We always order green tea. It’s the Japanese kind with a nutty flavour. There are not very many types of beers to choose from. Sometimes I’ll have a Sapporo. Huge menu. Always something on special. You can watch the chef make the sushi rolls. They have a separate bar, but there is never anyone in there. It has a big screen TV, but they usually are playing some Asian pop or Buddhist Zen Meditation Zither Music. They also have a karaōke night. In Summer, you can sit out on 2 different patios. Not much to offer in the way of a view, but it’s nice to be outside.

Yeah can’t say I was blown away. Staff was a bit inattentive. Took a long time for my sushi order. Was small and not much fish in it for $ 10.95 a roll and $ 5.95 for a cone. I think my cone had maybe two pieces of scallop. Couldn’t tell. Can’t say I’d return for sushi.

We’ve been here many times, for the most of the time it averages a 3.5, but I came here for my birthday today and it was the worst. Our server clearly didn’t want to be there and was pathetic, not one did she come by to ask us if we needed anything else. Sushi was mediocre, they sliced our roll too thick. I could see if it was busy that service might wane a bit but the restaurant was deserted(less than 1⁄3 full.) Please don’t go by just this review. Most of the time is better!

Usually we order take out from Maki Maki but this Friday we ended up there by chance. We first made our way out for dat night walking from restaurant to restaurant finding out that reservations are definitely needed on a Friday night. So we decided to go to Maki Maki knowing we could get fed fairly quickly. Even so, Maki Maki was quite busy. They had the lounge rented out to a private function but we got seated quickly. Booths are spacious so you don’t feel like you are in your neighbours conversation. Drink orders were brought quickly and servers were friendly. Now for the food… We ordered three rolls which is enough food for 2 people who are moderately hungry. They were very accommodating when we asked to substitute lettuce for avocado in our dynamite rolls. The first two rolls came out at the same time but the last one was 5 min or so later. The dynamite rolls were large and thinly cut making them hard to eat. Overall Maki Maki is a good eat!

I am giving it a 3 because of the sushi… however, as a «overall» score, it would be a 2.5. We went with friends who had been there before, however, not in quite a while. We were seated relatively quickly and our server seemed attentive enough when she seated us. My companion and our friend’s husband ordered the sashimi/sushi«boat» and myself and our friend ordered the cod and the beef teriyaki. The Black Cod was quite good and well prepared although the huge portion of white rice could have been spared and perhaps a vegetable prepared Vietnamese style? This was also true for the Beef Teriyaki. This is what brought down the rating for me… never having been I did ask what would be a good«non sushi» meal since there was so much to choose from and never having gone, I was a bit overwhelmed. It was as though I hadn’t asked, so I stuck with what I know. The sushi on the other hand was thoroughly enjoyed, so this is good :-) The rolls were quite good as I did order the Avocado Rolls and the Spicy Tuna Rolls. Very fresh tasting and amply filled with the ingredients where the rice wasn’t so thick. Strangely enough(and this is where the«attentiveness» took a bit of a nosedive), we were never offered a «drink menu» nor did our server even ask. At this rate, we don’t even know if they serve Sake/Japanese beers or the like… even sodas. This is also true for dessert or something sweet. I would have thought that perhaps Green Tea ice cream or some Vietnamese/Japanese sweet but again, wasn’t suggested or hinted… the bill though was suggested and it came expediently enough, machine in hand as well. If anyone can let me know about the drink/dessert situation here, I would at least like to know if they serve these items. Our friends felt badly that we went since they had remembered it very differently in terms of the service. The important thing is that the sushi was good and company better :-)

We’ve never eaten Vietnamese food at this restaurant so I can’t say all negative, but this is certainly NOT a place to eat Sushi. They don’t know what sushi really is. The vinegar rice was really bad. It was not real«Su-meshi(Vinegar Rice)» at all and rice was awfully WET! WET! WET! so I instantly lost appetite after the first bite. The rolls looked very unprofessional and all rolls we ordered didn’t look nice(except for the Mango-Tango-roll). Miso soup has tiny-tiny chopped tofu(but that I can live with) and tasted mostly salty soup base but not much miso in it(cheap way to make miso-soup). The end, these really bad sushi dinner for two and half people costed more than $ 80.00 with tip. So over charged. I really hate the restaurant charges a lot for bad meal. We will never gone to this restaurant for Shushi, NEVER! But maybe should try Vietnamese…

This review is specifically for the Japanese portion of the menu. There is also a Vietnamese and Western menu(phở and hamburgers, anyone?). I am always wary of places that have more than one kind of cuisine on its menu, and this place was no exception. We love sashimi and maki. The maki was average(see photos), nothing that really blew my mind, and the rice was mushy and generally there was too much of it. The wasabi paste was hit or miss — we got some blobs that weren’t spicy at all, and others that were super spicy. The deluxe sashimi was actually pretty good, and each type of fish came in a multiple of two, which is great when you’re just two people! I also liked that they offer low-sodium Yamasa soy sauce in addition to the regular soy sauce(assuming they fill the two jars with different kinds). Overall, I’d come back again to sample other menu items, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here.

One of the rolls I always get is the caterpillar roll. It’s an unagi roll with avocado wrapped around it, It’s usually really good, with generous pieces of unagi in the middle, and topped with fresh and soft avocado. I think this is one of their featured rolls and it usually does not disappoint. This one occasion I had it though, it was a little bit light on unagi and a bit heavy on rice. It still tasted really good, but I just wish there was a little bit more unagi. I would have to say that it was really nicely plated this time and the flower was a nice touch. It was probably leftover from the a plant from the lunar new year but still nice! They always use pieces of octopus for the eyes of the caterpillar too. The other roll we got was the spicy scallop roll. It didn’t really taste like anything. I couldn’t really taste the scallop, and what I could taste wasn’t very flavourful. I would recommend trying their other rolls like the spider roll(crispy soft shell crab with cucumbers and amago), volcano roll(shrimp tempura topped with unagi), or their dragon roll(crab meat, avocado, cucumber, and unagi). Be warned though, these rolls are better but they are much more expensive! Honestly, I think their prices have increased over the years. If you want specialty rolls, I recommend you check out Ichiban. They have really good rolls for at least half the price! This is one of the more popular and common dishes at a Vietnamese restaurant. Grilled pork, spring roll, egg, and shredded pork(Com suon nuong cha gio trung bi). It’s usually served over broken rice, which gives the rice a different texture but they served it with full grain rice. Usually when I go to a Vietnamese restaurant, this is my dish of choice… I just think I had way too much phở growing up so now I usually just opt for rice options. Usually the pork chop is marinated and seasoned with lemongrass, salt, pepper, fish sauce, and garlic. The portions here are relatively the same as other places, maybe a bit more meat. It was seasoned nicely and had good flavours. It was a little bit sweet and went well with the rice. Their spring rolls taste like plain Vietnamese spring rolls. Nothing too spectacular, but usually you don’t get 4 with a dish like this so it was nice and made me pretty full. This is their«Bun 3 Mau» which literally means 3-coloured noodles. The number usually means how many different kinds of meat there is. This is another popular item at Vietnamese restaurants. I’ve seen some places go up to «Bun 7 mau» that serve noodles with 7 different kinds of meats! The 3 here are grilled pork, grilled prawns, and grilled prawns and spring rolls…

Maki Maki isn’t a fusion restaurant, yet it serves everything. I usually go here for a quick inexpensive bite. The service is always solid and the prices are not too high. The number one reason you would pick Maki Maki vs other Japanese restaurants is that isn’t really a «Japanese» restaurant. From the menu you can see that it serves everything from Phở & Sushi to Hamburgers! So if you’re into the mood for one thing, and your friend is in the mood for something else, this is a great place to go Pros Great prices A lot of variety Free parking even though it’s on Whyte Cons Service is mediocre.

Always come here for phở soup which is very delicious. Rolls are a little expensive for what you get(too much rice and not enough fish). Recently went there for lunch and got maki B combo which was not so good. The rolls were very poor quality(not tasty and falling apart). Generally speaking their rolls are far from what real japanese kitchen is.
