I believe in the pastry reward system. Some days, when I’m driving home I approach Paradiso Pastries and I can almost smell the butter, hear the sound of my teeth breaking through layers of glazed phyllo pastry into oceans of custard cream and feel the happy chemicals flooding my cerebellum. On rainy bad-hair days I stop and go in. On sunny, cheerful Fridays I stop and go in. This reward system works well — thanks to my treadmill;) This pastry paradise is just a few blocks from my house, so whenever I’m entertaining company or need a host gift, I pop over for a box of baklava — and my reward of choice: custard filled pastries of every size and shape imaginable, sinful balls of chocolate cookie dough rolled in sprinkles, honey soaked phyllo pastry membranes, stacked on a bed of sweet pistachios … you get the picture. If you have a sweet tooth, this north-end gem is worth the drive — or jog or bike ride to burn off the calories in advance. Guilty or guiltless, the rewards are worth it!

Paradiso Bakery is awesome! They feature Middle Eastern treats including Baklava with pistachios, various short bread like cookies, and lots of cakes sliced into individual portions. I found this bakery while driving through the area. It is right next door to a Mediterranean supermarket which caught my eye, but I am glad I wandered into this place as well. The shortbread cookies are awesome and everything is extremely fresh and cooked daily. The store itself is very clean and the food looks perfectly divine in the glass showcases. Check it out if you are in the area and in need of a sweet treat!
