Shaheen Grocery & Bakery – Edmonton

This place is awesome. A bakery and grocery you’d be more apt to find outside of this neighbourhood — it has the convenient trappings of a corner store, but also a fantastic variety of middle eastern ingredients (not produce) such as tinned staples, spices, frozen items, packaged foods and also — the most crazy delicious naan bread. White, whole wheat and butter varieties, these are always still warm from the oven when I pick them up. They aren’t done in a tandoor, rather commercial ovens but that yields a really consistent, great chewy texture. Also, if you don’t finish them, they make SUPERB textured croutons for salads. Also, we’ve made pizzas with them tons of times. Check out this place and buy a few ingredients you’ve never used before — you’ll be glad you did. The staff is super friendly and helpful too. They found za’atar for me today.
