I was not having any luck today for lunch. I was playing chauffeur to my parents who had an appointment downtown, and they didn’t get out until about 1:30, so they were getting hangry. We exited downtown and I was going to take them to Barb & Ernie’s for lunch, but when we got there they were only serving breakfast. At just about 2pm. Ooookay. Mom got a look on her face at the whole breakfast thing, so out we go on a new search. So we decided to try Coco’s Chicken on Argyle. Results? Not open between Christmas and New Year’s. Fail #2. Dad saw steak on a sign(Steak Out shares a parking lot with Coco’s), and said that would work for him. I remembered seeing on Unilocal that it didn’t get the most glowing reviews, but at this point in the game, I wasn’t going to argue with him. Hangry dad is not something one wants to deal with. Ever. I just hoped and prayed that this giving in didn’t blow up in my face. First thing I do while walking in is buy the Groupon I remembered seeing(LOL). $ 9 for $ 16 worth of breakfast/lunch for up to 4 people. The place had a couple of tables occupied, but we were seated right away. No problems there! The décor could really use an upgrade. New carpets and a coat of paint could really brighten the place up! But, it was clean, so just call it ‘retro’ rather than ‘dated’ and go with it. Menus arrived promptly, and we got nice big glasses of ice water. Mom and I decided to share a California Club with fries and add gravy to the deal, while dad had a 6 oz steak sandwich(med. rare), which comes with fries and either one of the soups of the day or a starter salad(he chose soup: beef cabbage). Because it was a starter soup, it arrived first. Mom called dibs on a taste before dad added so much pepper you can’t actually tell what it is. They both loved it! Mom was sad she wasn’t having soup after the taste. It was a really big bowl of homemade soup, which really impressed them! From the looks of things there was lots of veggies and beef in the soup! So far so good! Our mains came out shortly after, and both of us were quite happy! The sandwich was jaw-dislocating tall, which is what you want in a Club! The roast was actual roast beef and not a pressed kind. The fries were done up crispy(but not burnt), and the gravy was made in house! For Dad the steak was cooked well, about as tender as a sirloin can get, and everything else was tasty. Our sandwich also came with a little cup of coleslaw and a chunk of pickle. While I gobbled up the pickle, mom wasn’t crazy about the coleslaw, so it got slid over to dad who really enjoyed it. It’s all up to what you like, I guess.(she said it was mayonnaise-y to her…) We never did get our bill, so we just packed up and went to the cash register area by the door. The Groupon info was taken quickly and the bill updated, and then we were out the door in no time. The bill with the discount came to $ 17(so I guess it would have been $ 33 without it). All in all it was a good, quick lunch. The star docked is for the non-retro retoro décor and not getting a bill promptly. But food wise, it was decent! I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, but if I was in the neighbourhood, I’d swing in.

Not recommended. I waited for over two hours for my delivery; my food was only warm when it finally got to me, and I live less than ten minutes away. The bread on my deli smoked meat sandwich was soggy. The accompanying poutine was SO salty that my mouth is still hurting three hours later. The deli sandwich tasted fine, but unremarkable. The gravy on the poutine had a decent taste, but because the poutine itself was so salty, I couldn’t enjoy it. Half of the sandwich and poutine were thrown into the garbage. $ 30 meal that was extremely disappointing.

It was 7 am Saturday morning and we decided we wanted a full breakfast. We used to go to The Steak Out quite often but hadn’t for some time because of poor service. We got there and the waitress was absolutely miserable. She yelled across the restaurant to us(the only customers) that coffee would be another couple of minutes. Then she didn’t even bother to come over and greet us at all or ask about our order… nothing. So we left. We waited 10 minutes and she didn’t bother to even come over at all. Finally we left. I don’t think she even noticed or had a clue. She was the reason that we stopped going previously but we thought perhaps she had left or things had changed. THEYHAVEN’T!!! So we left and went to Coras’ What a joy it was to walk into Coras’ and have such a friendly greeting! Linda cheerfully brought coffee and juice right away and took our orders. I asked if I could have extra potato instead of eggs and it was no problem at all. The food was absolutely delicious. We will never go back to The Steak Out again. It’s Chez Cora for us!!!

Eeee… I came in only because my vehicle was being serviced at South Acura Dealership. I walked here thinking O a pub?! I can have a couple of beers :) I came in, it was dark and smelled a little off… I didn’t care I wanted to give it a go and just have a beer. I looked around and saw an empty booth. The booth was old and I mean the leather on the seat was cracked and needed to be replaced. The server came and I asked what was on Tap and all I could make out was keiths from her ramble(she was talking fast and not looking at me). She came with the beer and the glass was dirty… That was disappointing. Lets just say I didn’t finish me beer and settled my small tab. I don’t think I’ll be back.

This place has been a go to for us for a couple of years now. It’s a greasy spoon kind of place in a strip mall on the Southside(bonus sex shop and massage parlor right in the same building, if you’re looking to make it a date night! ;-) If you’re looking for anything other than a classic truck stop experience, go somewhere else. I love this kind of stuff, but it isn’t a «foodie» style joint at all. And that’s okay! I love the clubhouse sandwich and onion rings here, but I decided to try out their Montréal smoked meat sandwiches after reading so much about them recently. I was not disappointed. The sandwich I was served was comparable to the smoked meat sandwich I’ve been served at places famous for the stuff in Montréal itself. Large portion, meat perfectly seasoned, and served on great rye bread. The side of poutine was pretty unimpressive. Gravy and melted cheddar cheese is NOT poutine. However, the fries were crispy and perfectly done. The cole slaw was passable, and a perfect side to the sandwich. Go here for truck stop favourites without having to drive out of the city. Don’t expect it to be anything it isn’t. You won’t be disappointed.

I hung out for a couple of drinks in the lounge side of this Southside steak joint, which is called Drifters Pub. It is your typical outdated drinking hole with owners who don’t seem to care about it’s appearance and upkeep. The server was not bad, but she certainly wasn’t great! I ordered their ‘famous’ Montréal Smoked Meat Sandwich to go, because I just didn’t want to eat in there. They have ‘Montréal Smoked Meat Sandwiches’ written on the signage above the entrance, and so you might expect them to be out of this world! Nope! I barely got through half of mine — thanks only to the packaged mustard I squirted on — before I tossed the rest of it(including the below average coleslaw) in the trash. I’ve had way better versions at Sherlock Holmes! I Heart Edmonton

My husband and I came here a while ago and it was just OKAY. It was certainly nothing to write home about. The inside of the restaurant was clean but seems to have not been remodeled since the early 1980s. It was very busy the Saturday morning we went. There were only two waitresses and we were told we’d be waiting 25 minutes for our orders. We were like, okay. We can wait. When we finally got the food, it was just average. I had steak, eggs and«hashbrowns” — huge chunks of potato browned on the outside but undercooked inside. I’m sure the cook really worked hard to prepare our meals, but I wasn’t feeling it and it didn’t hit the spot. Needless to say, coming here ended up being a one time deal. Fortunately for this restaurant it seems to have regulars.

Breakfast was great! Cannot speak for other meals but this will definitely become our greasy spoon breakfast spot. Much nicer inside than it looked and waitress was friendly even while very busy.

Okay, I know this place is mostly perceived to be a dive, but it came up when I was looking for takeout on line, and the menu actually looked really good. So we decided to give it a shot. It’s been around forever, so how bad could it be. We ordered lasagna, bbq chicken pizza, teriyaki wings, and spinach dip. Lasagna — greasy and sauce had a burnt taste. Pizza — tastes okay, but I don’t think there was enough sauce, and actually pretty overpriced at $ 15 for a small 8″ pizza. Wings — disgusting. You could taste the grease from the fryer, and they were not crispy at all. Spinach dip was okay, but nothing special. BF was in the washroom within 30 minute of finishing eating. So I don’t recommend this place at all, unless you have intestines made of steel.

We went here on family day as we wanted smoked meat sandwiches. We never got any — we went into the restaurant and the top level was either occupied or dirty tables — the bottom level had a large party with several screaming children so we opted to sit up top where it was quieter. The waitress came over and told us to move to a clean table — and we said we had no problem waiting for table to be cleaned as we didn’t want to sit by large party on lower level. She then told us that she refused to serve us at a dirty table and walked off with no other comment! The guy at the next table by himself told us she did the same to him and he moved but that service was brutal. We ended up leaving as she refused to serve us if we sat on the top level(which was open as there were other people there)

I thought the food was decent, meat pizza was good. The wings were very dry! Like crunchy dry. The food server last night was kinda mean. I dont understand how hard it is to smile and help customers out. We had to ask for menus after 10 minutes of sitting which is weird. Hopefully she just had a bad night but I dont think Ill be back. Dingy restaurant.

A nice greasy spoon type of place, truck stop feel in the city. The food is of the burger and sandwich fair with very solid smoked meat and steak options. In fact the smoked meat offerings are great surprises in this neck of the woods. They have hearty breakfast options as well. This is certainly a nice hidden jem when you get tired of the regular breakfast chains. The atmosphere is nothing special and the service has a family run feel. Which means the service can be rough at times but is always friendly. The food is good and the portions fair. Give it a try.

My 1st experience: Great, friendly service and the sandwiches are huge and look scrumptious. But I’m looking for a great«Steak Sandwich» place and unfortunately, this was not it. My steak was over cooked and lacked flavor. The garlic toast was soggy and barely toasted. I will visit again but next time I’m opting for one of the deli menu items, which look very good.

Brusque service combined with a fairly poor smoked meat sandwich means that I won’t bother going to this place again. I thought it might have improved over the last couple of years. I was mistaken. Pass.

We were at visions at supper time so we walked across the parking lot to(the steak out) the server was friendly and not to slow. The starter was a plate of wings(served with fries) never had that in a starter before. The wings were small but had 12 wings for $ 9 was a good starter. I ordered the stake and spaghetti it came with salad. The Caesar salad was good but the bacon bits were way to salty. I left them in the bottom of the bowel. The spaghetti and sauce was good flavor and a nice size but the stake was 6oz(not mentioned in menu should have asked) it was grilled just right to medium the flavor was good but was to small for the dish/fixings My wife had the fish and chips/mashed The fish was much to greasy and no flavor.

Loved the deluxe smoked meat and the friendly service. Will definitely go back.
