The Three Amigos

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of tasting homemade pupusas and tamales from various friends of mine. I’ve grown to enjoy and sometimes crave these dishes. The pupusas and the tamales that I ate here tasted just like the homemade dishes I’ve experienced in the past. I appreciated the skill and care that was put into making these dishes simply delicious.
In my opinion, the prices are fairly reasonable. My boyfriend and I ordered 2 kinds of pupusas — one Chicharron pork for $ 3.50 and one cheese for $ 3.00. These pupusas came with a side of cabbage slaw and salsa. We also ordered pork tamales ($ 14.99) which came with 3 tamales, rice, refried beans, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo — we shared this plate of food. Everything was so tasty! I was full and quite satisfied after gobbling up this food.
Unfortunately, I experienced a couple of minor disappointments here. 1) They ran out of horchata drink. 2) They ran out of chicken tamales. It was discouraging to be told that 2 items that I ordered were not available. I simply ordered alternatives. It wasn’t a huge deal.
In the end, I’d honestly prefer to come to eat here rather than some of the higher end Mexican restaurants in the city. So good!

Just had the worst service I have ever had today at 3 Amigos in Edmonton.
Name shows Leigha in receipt. First telling us that we had to order food to get chips. I ordered chicken wings. 30 minutes go by and no food. When I asked about chips she says they were making a fresh batch because we had ordered guacamole with the chips. BUT 4 tables sat after us and we’re getting chips. How does that make sense?
40 minutes to get chips/​guac and chicken wings. No apologies but blamed us because she says she doesn’t give out chips with out ordering entrees but now she’ll give us Extra chips.
Thanks for that detail after the fact.
Awful. And hey we weren’t asking for much. Just the basics. And hey, less attitude would have helped too. Just because you say «excuse me» and «please» doesn’t make your tone and more hospitable. Oh and those extra chips? Dropping it off when you gave us the checks wasn’t worth any points either.
Never again and will recommend any one coming to Edmonton to not come here.

Consistently good food. You never leave hungry. The guac is fantastic. I really enjoyed the tequila marinated chicken tacos. Great authentic little spot!

They have a sample platter under the appys or to share part of the menu… I order this everytime we are in it gives you a little bit of everything. Since I am allergic to all other meats except chicken… they are kind enough to make the platter for me with all chicken… the homemade secret hot

Very authentic Mexican food (something we don’t have a lot of in Edmonton). Our server was fabulous. She was very knowledgable and attentive to our needs. The food was very freshly prepared using only the freshest ingredients. I can’t wait to return to try something else on their menu.
I had the Fiesta Sample Platter. It was great. I was offered some complementary hot salsa to go with my meal, and they served some home made freshly made tortilla chips and salsa before our meal arrived. My wife had the eggs rancheros and loved it.

I’ve eaten here a couple times now. It’s got a very nice atmosphere. The waitstaff are all really nice. The only reason I’m giving a 3 is because I just don’t like the food. At all. I go there hungry and I always leave hungry because the portions just aren’t enough for me. I’ve been to Mexico about four times as well, and had «real» Mexican food — the food here is quite similar, but for some reason just doesn’t hit the mark for me. I can’t say too many bad things cause it’s not a bad place, just that the food is underwhelming for me.

We shared the Amigo Tex-​Mex Nachos & the Fish Tacos. The nachos were layered in a delicious cheese with mucho toppings and fresh tortilla chips. The fish tacos were scrumptious with refried beans, rice, and guacamole on the side. The portions are definitely quite large and shareable!
For dessert, I tried El Mysterio — a Mexican ice cream sandwich. It is supposed to be comprised of two churro patties with ice cream. However, the churro patties were more like plain tostatas. A bit disappointing.

Checked out the three amigos because we had a groupon. I was actually quite surprised by how empty the restaurant was for a Tuesday night. Our experience was probably best described as mediocre.
There was only one server for the whole restaurant, which meant as it got busier service decreased quite a bit. Our server was pleasant by all means but she definitely needed some help. We ordered the chicken quesadillas and fish tacos. Our food took a bit to get to our table (we could see it come up but it took a while for our server to bring it out) so parts of our meal were cold. The chicken quesadillas were good but I was disappointed by the fish tacos. The fish was deep fried in a batter, which was more soggy than crispy. I think also because it had been sitting for a while, the bottom of the tortilla was soggy and the taco fell apart easily. We also decided to try a dessert — ice cream sandwich — and that was pretty tasty. Kind of like deep fried ice cream but sandwich style.
I don’t think I would come back to the three amigos, unfortunately, not because it was terrible but mostly because there are a lot of other choices in Edmonton.

Food was ok but they need to work on customer service. Waiting too long for food and waitress need to work with just tell the truth about people’s orders instead of making up story’s.

I was quite impressed with this place. It is wayyyy better than the notoriously overrated tres carnales. They give you real portions, the service was awesome. We had a server leigha was the only server for the entire restaurant and it was steady but she managed to be excellent! We got seated right away we let her know that we were in a rush too. She had everything under control. I had the steak tacos which were well seasoned and not too messy. We also had the chips and guacamole. I liked that plus it was on special I’m addition to the margaritas. The only thing I didn’t care for was the rice but this place still gets 5 stars. I also loved the hot sauce omg AMAZING hot sauce. I’ll be back

We had a great time at this mexican joint, I was looking for somewhere to eat downtown that I had not been to before. My girlfriend and I were going to check out the place next door when Three Amigos caught our eye and am I glad it did. No word of a lie this place has the best margaritas in town. It’s like someone flew them to you direct from Mexico. The food was great all the usual mexican favorites on the menu. We both had the tacos, my GF had the vegetarian and I went with chicken both excellent and good protion sizes. The service was friendly and the waitress was quite cute as well. Overall experience was fantastic, I think I have found my new favorite Mexican restaurant in town.

Honestly the food isn’t outstanding and it’s overpriced.
I understand the fact that they are right on Jasper Ave but $ 18 for a bull drink?

I went to have dinner with my friend. Two dishes, one appetizer, one small dessert plus a bull, total near $ 80. Wholly smoke.
I wouldn’t have gone there if i didn’t have the groupon…

Been sitting here for an hour waiting for food. Would like to comment on how it tastes but I may never actually get to experience it.

Mexican food in Edmonton is dominated by trendier spots or fast food places with not much authentic Mexican cuisine in the most central parts of the city. Enter Three Amigos which delivers on its promise of authentic Mexican food but is overall just average on the actual quality of the cuisine.
The menu offers a wide variety of Mexican staples such as tacos, salads, quesadillas and enchiladas with authentic tomato, mole and other sauces. The presence of empanadas and tamales on the menu was even more exciting, but the lack of vegetarian versions of them kept me from ordering them. Nonetheless, the menu is extensive and offers a good mix of familiar Mexican dishes and more traditional ones.
I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas which were overall just satisfactory. They definitely satisfied my craving for Mexican food and the mole sauce was a treat I hadn’t had for a while, but the overall dish wasn’t as flavourful as truly great Mexican food was. The mole sauce lacked the richness in flavour that really defines the dish and the enchiladas were fairly middling. The side dishes of beans and rice were quite tasty but hardly enough to vault the overall dish to anything beyond «good».
Three Amigos has an extensive amount of gluten free and vegetarian options available and while I would’ve loved a veggie tamale, I really can’t complain about the number of options I had. Unfortunately, I must’ve picked a bad day to go because they also had no papusas or horchata which are Latin American staples that I was very much looking forward to.
Overall Three Amigos is definitely good enough to satisfy a craving for authentic Mexican food and is fairly reasonably priced. I’d definitely visit when I get the (all too frequent) need for Mexican food again but it won’t be my go-​to destination for truly great food in the future.

Ummmm Am I in Mexico? Because it sure felt like it the second I walked into the 3 Amigos!
I walk by the 3 Amigos every day on the way to work and I have always wanted to try it and I seriously cannot believe I waited this long. Seriously WOW!
To start off I ordered a pineapple margarita (yes pineapple — and don’t tell my boss I had a drink on my lunch break … hehe oops) It was good but I don’t like tequila so I’m not 100% sure why I ordered it but I think it was because I literally felt like I was in Mexico. 3 Amigos has a legit mexican restaurant vibe (just alot cleaner)
Our server brought us out some fresh baked chips and salsa (complimentary) and they were amazing! Salsa was so yummy and the chips were fresh and warm. My only complaint is that they were gone in 5 seconds and I could have ate more.
I ordered the tequila lime tacos and my friend ordered the fish tacos. Both came with a side of rice and refried beans and — wait for it — GUAC that did not cost extra!!! Seriously Revolutionary. Her fish tacos also come with a kind of chipotle sauce that was delish and didnt have an extreme overpowering smoky taste like alot of the chipotle sauces I have tried do.
Both of our tacos were completely amazing! This is real authentic mexican food people! We did come at 1pm and it was pretty dead so I am unsure if it gets busy for lunch or dinner but if it doesn’t yet I highly recommend you take advantage of it and get in there ASAP! I enjoyed these tacos ever more than the widely popular (and delicious) Tres Carnales, and yet Tres is about 1000X busier. I predict it won’t be long until 3 amgios is seeing some of those crowds as well!
Thoroughly impressed! Look forward to more reviews here on different dishes homeslices because I will for sure be returning

Craving Mexican food, a friend and I decided to visit this spot, which is conveniently close to my studio, and reminisce about our travels together in Latin America.
Quickly seated, and drink orders taken, Tecate for me, water for the lady.
The menu has changed slightly since my last visit, with the addition of Fish Tacos and Papusas, both of which excited me… One does not often see papusas here, as they are a bit more of a Salvadoran specialty than Mexican, but they are a food I love.
The Fish Taco, made with Red Snapper, looked too good to turn down, so we both ordered them, along with one of each type of Papusa, as an appetizer. Our server indicated that the Papusas take a little longer to prepare, so be prepared to wait. We were in no rush, so were fine with it. In fact they arrived in about 15 min, and were fabulous. One was pulled pork, the other cheese, and came with a tangy sauce. They were absolute perfection, in both texture and flavour, and as we were finishing them off, the tacos landed.
The portions were huge, with 3 large, stuffed tacos, refried beans, rice, and Guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream as garnishes, on the side.
The snapper was beautifully deep fried, crunchy and delicious, all the garnishes and veg beautifully fresh for an overall flavour sensation.
In the end, my lovely companion and I just managed to get through the tacos. I had a few bites of the beans and rice, which were also excellent, but was done in by the snapper.
The big differences from previous visits to this location were the size of the portions, the menu selection, and the quality of the preparation. I was extremely impressed with this visit, and I will be back soon for more of those Fish Tacos, an item I personally consider to be one of nature’s perfect foods.
Final bill, including tax and tip, $ 56.00.

It’s really just okay. The nachos were pretty good, but the service was off. It’s seems as if this place is fast food trying to be sit down with wait staff and it just doesn’t work. We were a large group (about 20 ppl) with a reservation. I was there for 45 minutes and the only course that was brought out was the nachos, and they brought out two courses which was strange. I had to go back to work, so I missed the rest of the food.

I was so excited when I saw that The Three Amigos was opening a second location in my ‘hood. I liked their food at the 106^th St location, and since I’m not always in the mood to join a giant queue for the extremely hyped Tres Carnales, I thought Three Amigos would be a good alternative for those days when I wanted some low-​key Mexican food.
It has, but it’s not perfect. Service is inconsistent, leaning to the poor side. Although most servers here are friendly, some of them are very ineffective. Requests for things like hot sauce, water, or extra salsa get forgotten, even when there are very few tables seated.
The food is typically tasty (in particular the lime and tequila chicken tacos, and the quesadillas!) but their pupusas wouldn’t be listed in my top 3 in Edmonton.
Unfortunately, details get lost/​sides don’t get delivered, like pickled cabbage for the pupusas, or hot sauce for the tacos, and sometimes this makes the food taste a bit flatter than usual.
These guys have done a great job in furnishing the place — and signage and décor continues to be upgraded and completed as they grow.
I really hope that the kinks in the service/​details departments at Three Amigos improves soon, because I really want to love it. But liking it is the best that I can do for the moment.

Average food. Pretty bland tasting mexican food. Great service on my visit. Lively atmosphere.
The Parking situation sucks. the mexican decorations when you walk in make you feel like you have been transported to a mexican fiesta.
Well i started with the free chips to start with the mild salsa. the chips were good. The salsa was watery but had a good taste. After finishing the 10 chips in the basket, the waitress offerred the guacomole since she raved it was fantastic. I agreed. The chips were served warm and a small bowl of guacomole had a good hint of lime. It was definetly enough for 2 – 3 people. Only downside was that it was not on the menu so I was surprised to find out when the bill came that it was $ 7.99. Thats overpriced and I felt like I had been swindled like I had eaten at a tourist trap in europe. (How they serve bread then charge 4 euros a person). Mmmm. Not a good start. Minus a star.
I started with papusas the chicharon one and the cheese one. They were made fresh hot and crispy they were actually pretty good. The price was decent too. $ 3-​$ 3.50 each which is cheap for an appetizer. I found that one portion would be just enough as two was quite filling. I would order these again.
Next I had the fish tacos. There were three. The fish was crispy and fresh and topped with avocado, tomato salsa and a spicy mayo. The sauce made the dish since it had such a great kick to it and reminded me of my mexican holidays on the beach. The feeling was short lived though as the rest of the food was bland and boring. It was accompanied with guacomole, a fresh tomato salsa, sour cream for added flavour for the tacos. I found if I added any of these toppings the taco would fall apart bc they served those frozen mini taco shells you buy at the spanish grocery store. Which were pretty flimsy. So a mess was made every time I bit into the taco. Bc the shells were not even toasted or crispy I minus a star bc they were bland and needed something extra.
The sides of all their specialty dishes or main entrees are served with rice and black beans. These were super bland. Almost no seasoning and literally just filled the plate so it didnt look dismal. Come on $ 15.99 for three tiny strips of fish??? I have to minus a star for each side. Since the rice was mushy and flavourless and the beans were watery and tasteless. That mexican kick or spice was completly lost in every dish.
For prices of entrees from 12.99 to 15.99. The portions were small bc the plate just had too much filler of tasteless food. (Rice and beans). So the food is overpriced for what you get.
Service was great and super friendly. So this must be noted as from other Unilocaler reviews it seems bad or slow service is the norm. But I came right before the dinner rush and the server was great and was very helpful with ordering and filling up our drinks. So I have to add a star for her friendly service.
Oh yeah margaritas are $ 6.99 but they got those massive huge ones too for $ 16.99. I was driving and I really wanted one. So maybe next time ill just come for a drink and appetizers on a hot day.
Overall the awful parking situation either metered or hourly impark parking is only whats availble wont make me rush back. If you dont mind have zero spice factor in your mexican food come here. Bc to me its super bland.

Came here for the first time post Unilocal’s Fit Club for an authentic Cinco de Mayo treat! Unfortunately that’s where the fun ended.
Handmade fresh to order — noted on their menu from the salsas to the tortillas. Be sure to have lots of time and don’t be in a rush. I phoned ahead of time and reserved a table for 5. We were surprised to arrive and find the restaurant ¾ empty. We were seated and advised of a $ 5 per person cover charge for the Mariachi band.
Started off with the MUCHO double corona bull dog. I’m not much of a beer drinker but hubby liked it. And he better at $ 17.99!
We ordered Papuans to start — $ 3.50 each and came with about a tbsp of fermented cabbage and a tbsp of red sauce. Now, I LOVE my Papuans so do yourself a favour and go to an El Salvadorian restaurant like Acajutlas for Papuans that will come with 3 sauces and a giant jar of fermented cabbage (aka heaven)… I digress…
The Papusa itself lacked flavour and the piping hot temperature I am accustomed to at other restaurants.
We ate with our fingers waiting to get the attention of someone to bring us napkins and silverware.
Next up was a complimentary basket of about 20 tortilla chips for 5 of us and maybe 3 tbsp of salsa. Really? Really! A table of 5 with $ 25 in cover charge and we get 20 chips…
Entrees arrived about 20 minutes later. I had requested water twice by now with still no success.
My friend’s taco salad was missing her chicken altogether and her drink had 2 hairs in it! When pointed out, she was told the hair wasn’t her server’s and given 75% off the beverage which had been mostly drank when she discovered the hairs. No adjustment was made to the taco salad — chicken was brought 10 minutes later and lacking flavour.
I had specifically requested extra spice for the following two meals which arrived with little to no spice:
Fiesta Sampler Platter with empanada, taco dorado, tostada, and tamale.
Alambre — seasoned steak and tocina mixed in with bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes topped with melted mozerella and 3 handmade tortillas.
Neither of our meals were hot which leaves me to wonder if the food just sits waiting without a hot pass while the rest of the table’s food is prepared.
$ 75 later (for two) and a disappointed tummy :-(
Sadly, Three Amigos was no friend of ours tonight. It’s pretty heartbreaking since we thoroughly enjoyed their south side location previously but alas, the Jasper location did not make the cut.

UPDATE 2 DAYS LATER — 3 of the people from our group have been sick for the past two days after eating here. It may be a fluke but we will NOT be back.
