My family and I somewhat recently found ourselves in need of Dr. Shilton’s services again. Our cat, Sketchers, was only 3 years old this spring when he developed non-​regenerative anemia as a complication of a genetic disorder; it came on very fast during the last 2 weeks of his life, and was terribly severe. He went from being a normal, healthy, energetic little boy to an exhausted, pain-​ridden fraction of himself barely able move without pain medication and completely uninterested in everything that had once brought him joy.
We had hoped not to have to make that call again for a long time, but when all of our options for treatment ran out and it became clear that Sketchers’ quality of life had deteriorated to an unacceptable level, we were very grateful to know Dr. Shilton was there for us. Every time we’ve had to endure this painful time, he has made it so much more bearable for us.
This experience was even more difficult for us with Sketchers’ young age, so we were very emotional and heartbroken, but Dr. Shilton was, as always, very understanding and gentle with us. He gave us all the time we needed, and didn’t rush any part of the procedure. It was particularly difficult to perform the procedure due to Sketchers’ low to almost non-​exist blood pressure, which was hard on us, so Dr. Shilton made every effort to avoid upsetting us by explaining everything very gently, and allowing us to make decisions based on that information.
Sketchers slipped away in his window seat in our living room, bathed by the light of a small sunbeam that managed to peek its way through the clouds that day, and the peace of that moment is worth every cent we pay for the priviledge of not taking our pets to the vet in their last moments.
