This location is perfect for the downtown work crowd and, smaller selection or not, it’s still my favourite destination for lunch. The sandwiches are great(in particular, I love the turkey) and are served on great sourdough or whole wheat breads from Julien’s bakery. It’s also a great spot to get a bowl of soup with a to-die-for biscuit. Earlier today, I had a bowl of the Thai carrot and ginger. Loved every spoonful. Not to mention every bite of the soup-drenched biscuit. I’m also a big fan of the citrus iced tea. It has a very subtle«tea» flavour, but gets a lot of bunch from orange and lemon juices. Very bright summery drink that goes perfectly with a sandwich. The cookies are probably not for everyone. Most of time that I’ve had them, they’ve been very crispy(though certainly not overcooked). Still tasty, but I don’t think they’d be huge crowd-pleasers. The space itself is definitely small and I’ve heard it can get busy around the lunch hour. Since there’s limited seating, I usually head down around 11:45, buy my goods, and head back to my office to make all of my co-workers very jealous. The prices aren’t unreasonable — around $ 7 for a sandwich and under $ 5 for a bowl of soup and a biscuit. They also have a selection of desserts(lemon bars, brownies, etc.) and frozen food to take home. Do yourself a favour and spend your next break heading down to Jane’s. As part of a day out with my son, we hit the Discovery Center and mid-morning, he was ready for a snack. We headed in to Discovery Jane’s to check out the offerings. As an aside: they have a tremendous selection of beverages and I was delighted to see that they offer soy milk along with regular milk, which is handy. I ordered a coffee and my son had a ginger snap cookie and a San Pellegrino Limonata. I can’t offer much of an opinion, but the coffee was good and obviously fresh and the cookie, which I managed to get just one small bite of, was very fresh, soft and chewy. There is a large selection of sandwiches, soup of the day, and a selection of frozen soups and entrees. Had I been heading back to the office I would have taken a couple of soups to stash in the freezer. There was a great selection.

A great spot to grab a quick sandwich and hot beverage. Attached to the Discovery Center, they cozy up next to the gift shop(you can walk through). Great idea for the folks going there who need a little pick me up, or bite to eat. A had their roast beef sandwich. Delicious. Spiced up mayo, real shaved beef, cheese and fresh bread. They have 2 small tables and 4 chairs by the window. Nice place to chill, but no wi-fi. The washrooms are VERY clean, the staff at the center do a great job. The tea they serve is great(for bagged tea). It’s from Metropolitan Tea Company(Canadian!) and is fresh. They only have about 4 – 5 types, but hey, I prefer quality over quantity any day. All in all it was a little pricey for what I got. $ 11 for my sandwich and tea.

The Discovery Centre recently added in a satellite café of the Halifamous Jane’s empire. Nicely designed, it adds a colourful splash to the lower floor of the centre and is accessible without having to pay for entry to the exhibits… although if you don’t, you’re missing out. A glass case shows off a variety of pre-made meals and snacks to go ranging from sandwiches to dips, spreads and sweets. Some of the items are easier to see than others, with some intensely wrapped snacks requiring some blind faith. Having only had a macaroon, I can’t offer much of an opinion on the eats besides that .god I want more of that macaroon. It has nuts and potentially pumpkin seeds in the perfect proportions to give this classic indulgence a crunchy twist. The staff member working during my visit didn’t go out of her way to go anything besides just ringing me in, unfortunately, but she seemed caught up in a book which I can at least relate to. Big disappointments? No espresso drinks, no wi-fi.

$ 6.75 for a Sandwich. I guess that is the standard price range for lunch downtown. The benefit of Jane’s is you get a pretty special sandwich. Rather than simply plopping on a some meat and veggies, Jane’s has taken each sandwich up a level. Tasty and, in the end, worth the price IMO. Staff is always very friendly as well.

Just wandered into the Jane’s at the Discovery Centre(or somewhat known as Discover Jane’s) on Barrington street and ordered a Roast Beef sandwich with white cheddar & horseradish mayo on sour dough bread. It was an awesome take away and I’m still relishing it as I write this from my desk just down the street. Oh and they made a glass of iced tea that’s somewhat lemony — tart, yet sweet? Not sure how they made it but it’s also fantastic. The $ 11 was a bit steep for the two items, but I certainly enjoyed it and wish I had more! I’ll be back for sure.
