Hard to beat. Very helpful staff who spent time with my boy and helped him pick a good book.

WOW. There are a whole lot of books here. First of all, when it comes to finding this place, you might feel like you’ve gone too far. Nope, keep walking It’s past the florist and then down a little bit more. It is not near the«front» door at all. Once you get closer though, it’s easy enough to spot. The books spill out into the front hall and pile around the cash area. There are stacks to the ceiling, shelves and racks stuffed with novels, magazines, fiction, BSC books(YAY!), Little Sister books(BOO!), and lovely antique books as well. If you know any serious literature lovers, this would be a great place to dig around and find a pretty awesome gift for them. However, the key word is «dig». That’s where this place loses me a little bit. There’s a general sense of organized chaos(the shelves do have labels and they’re all correct), but many books are simple out of date and it wouldn’t hurt them to have a proper cull of what they have to clear out the dead weeds. Still, it’s a fascinating spot and you never know what you might find here!

I can’t believe I didn’t know about this place before. Every book lover in Halifax should pay them a visit. They’re a little hard to find — across from the old TAO location, in the same entrance as Pacifico, but keep on going through the mall until you see them — but worth it. This place is crammed with books. I came with two friends, and all three of us found what we were looking for in various sections. They have very specific books about pretty much anything you might want! Large selections of sci fi, romance, classic literature, and regional folklore are particularly interesting. The prices are reasonable for all the used books. I can’t comment on the antiques, being ignorant of average antique pricing. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable, and great at pulling out specific books from the extensive collection in the store. Definitely going back again!

I always find rare goodies when I go to Dust Jacket Books and Treasures. They’re hands down my favourite used book store in Halifax. The store is cramped and overflowing with books, but the collection and variety of books is unsurpassed. I’ve found an out-of-print book from the ‘40s; three Hollywood magazines(two from the ‘80s and one from the ‘50s) in near-mint condition; and a host of books I’ve been searching for at the other used book stores/chain stores. The owners are very nice and very helpful. They will search at great lengths to find a book you’re looking for. The only downer is their website. It’s like a database, but you have to be very careful with how you search or you won’t find what you’re looking for. I usually have to search by category and hope I find what I’m looking for, or write the titles down and take them in and search myself.

Amazing that the staff were able to pull out the two books that I was looking for. What a great selection and well organized.

This is my favorite book store in Halifax. I’d stop by almost everyday to look for a pre-owned copy of Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. Not just any old copy though, it HAD to be a the copy with the orange Merry-go-Round horse on it. I would settle for nothing else! Then, on that fateful day on March 1, 2011, I saw a vintage, hard-cover copy displayed in the window. That very bright, orange Merry-go-Round horse, designed by artist Michael Mitchell, could have caught my eye from a mile away. I was ecstatic as the bookstore owner retrieved it from the display. While she rang me in, I admired it’s pre-loved, tattered jacket and as I opened and leafed through, I noticed a magazine clipping tucked between the pages. It was an article penned by Leonard Slater for McCall’s Magazine. A 50 year old piece dated July 1961, celebrating 10 years since The Catcher in the Rye debuted. It won me over!

Treasure Hunters take solace, the Dustjacket is everything you’re looking for. It’s even a hunt just to find the place! Located on the food court level of the Bell/Aliant building, the Dustjacket is literally overflowing with books. Please note that this is not one of those annoying misuses of the word literally. Books are spilling over shelves, stocked on the floor and outside the shop. For some this might be a little overwhelming and even a deterrent, but this is a store that knows its clientele and, more importantly, knows its clientele revels in this sort of organized chaos. The Dustjacket has a great selection of semi-new and antique books for you to devour. The display windows are filled with books on history, gonzo journalism, classic bands and controversial figures. There are books for kids, teens and adults, thick, hard cover biographies and beat up old Harlequin romances… and this is before you even step foot in the store! The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. You have to hunt a bit to find the Duskjacket, but aren’t the best treasures always the hardest to find?
