Freeman’s Little New York – Quinpool

Ordered potato skins, received cheesy fries. Where are the skins? These are just slices of potato with skin on them! Where are the empty potato pockets? You scamminG!

Ordered food late at night, just arrived at my hotel from a late flight. I had my food (with salad) delivered with no napkins or utensils. I called to complain, and they said they don’t normally deliver with napkins or utensils unless requested. I think it should be assumed that an order being DELIVERED TO A HOTEL would need napkins and utensils. I phoned to complained and they offered to send a driver «when free», but they had no idea when that would be. At 2:00 am, I didn’t feel like waiting for an unknown amount of time for a utensil delivery, so I ate my salad with my hands. The food was also very mediocre.

Crazy how this place is only closed for 4 hours everyday. All the food here is delicious. The burgers here became my favorite in town after the first time I had one there. It was the guacamole burger. Mmm…
The pizza is very tasty and they run super sick deals after a certain hour I believe. They also have great onion rings, fish and chips, and in the restaurant they have a digital jukebox. So if you are addicted to music, that might help.

I’ve lived around the Quinpool area for a few years now and Freeman’s has definitely been a regular hangout. They ARE a bit pricey, medium pizzas costing you around 17 $ after tax, but they are excellent. Their beer is good, the service is fast and friendly and they have things like trivia and live music regularly. GET THE GREEK PIZZA, YOU WONT REGRET IT.

Excellent food, service, and space (if a teensy bit crowded). Incredibly comfortable, sports bar feel without it being over the top. Great for a small group!
The black bean sweet potato burger was fantastic — I subbed guacamole instead of curry mayo and it was delicious! The rest of the company particularly enjoyed the onion rings.
Would recommend to groups that have diverse taste preferences — there is something for everyone!

Whenever I’m in Halifax, I stay close by to Freeman’s and generally always end up there at some point. I’m definitely a fan but this place seems to be getting closer to 3 stars than 5.
Food is generally tasty and affordable and, depending on what you get, a good size. Some items seem to be better than others (I usually get the pasta) but I do believe that Freeman’s is fairly consistent in its food quality.
Where you never know is the service. Last time I was there was a Saturday and the service was terrible. The girls working that night were nice — but they were just too busy. I’m not sure if it was a staffing issue or they don’t schedule well for weekends but all I know is that service was slow and we could hardly get ours’ attention when we needed it.
Overall — a good reliable place. They’re open late, which is great and usually pretty consistent. Just think twice about going on a weekend night if you’re looking to get in and out.

Just ordered delivery pizza and wings. Everything tastes amazing, was right on time (to the minute actually) and for a good price! The delivery guy was really nice too. Thank you so much! I will be ordering again for sure!

This place is hit or miss. Some of the servers are great — some of them are terrible.
I’ve been coming here for years, for beer… not food. I suggest you do the same.
6.50 for a 18oz Molson Canadian is a joke, but I guess you can do that when you have the monopoly on Quinpool Road. On another note, the beer is always CRISP (not like what you find at Niche or Split Crow).
I will continue to come here: It’s the closest bar to where I live and the beer is always on point.
Note to the manager: Please consider giving some of the newer waitresses a lesson in customer service. I am not going to go into detail but I will tell you this, I have been frequenting this location for 10+ years and never have I had such a bad experience as I did last week.

I was served old, curdled seafood chowder but the waitress didn’t disappoint. She took it away with a smile and an apology and gave me a coupon for a free appetizer. The other things I ordered were delicious and this place is student friendly. I will be back. Excellent wait staff! Now if only I could figure out their enthusiasm for parsley.

Updated my previous review from two stars to one star. Went back at the request of a visiting family member despite my warnings. Service was more on time this visit but got fries when we asked for poutine and our salad had a long black hair on it. The hair was not in the food but on top in plain site. Not only is this a health concern but there was clearly no attention paid by the waitress who not only brought us an incorrect side but also let a very noticeable hair on our salad make it past and to our table.

Honestly. I wanted to give this place a good review. But they only showed interest me once they thought I might order food. Good atmosphere. Not so good service.

Warm draft turned me off right up front. Pizza was decent. Might give it another chance.

… Well I went here drunk. I’m pretty sure the food and service was great. I plan on going there sober in the future and I will update this review.

I was hoping to try the Blue Olive Greek restaurant one recent COLD Sunday afternoon to kill time before an appointment I had on Quinpool. After facing frigid winds to walk there and find it closed, I had to pick another place to try close by and quickly, at which time I wasn’t fussy, just wanted to get warm. I’d been to Freeman’s YEARS ago for their pizza and remember liking it a lot, so thought I’d give it a try again. Pub atmosphere, long and narrow in layout with cozy booths (at least 10?) and the bar on the right side. Wasn’t greeted immediately upon entering so just ventured towards the booths until a passing server said I could take whichever one I wanted. This visit was nice because there was a live musician at the front, which although I couldn’t see from my viewpoint in the booth, added some entertainment value. It did take at least five full minutes to receive my menu though, and another maybe 10 minutes to place my order. The Sweet Potato Veggie Burger (12.99 fresh sweet potato and black bean patty, topped with lettuce, tomato, curry mayo and a cup of sweet chili Thai sauce on the side) is big and tasty but very soft and messy, so you may need extra napkins. The mayo gave enough flavor so I didn’t even end up using the side dip. Frozen fries on the side were blah but edible. Overall there was nothing memorable about here, but I’d go back in the future if someone else suggested it, preferably at night for drinks… and the pizza I liked all those years ago.

I’ve been going to Freeman’s for over a decade, though they’ve been around for much longer. My sister used to bring me here when she started university and I was in junior high, and now I’m finished university myself and still love going back.
Their garlic fingers are THE. BEST. EVER. There’s no beating them. I live in Ontario now where you cannot get this east coast delicacy and the first thing I do when I fly home is call up Freeman’s on my way home from the airport and order an extra large XXXtra cheesy garlicky goodness.
They have changed their menu in recent years, though most of the items are the same. They made a few minor changes, such as to their mighty burger (I think it’s now a mighty blue cheese burger) but all in all it’s pretty much the same. You won’t be disappointed when you order pretty much anything off their menu.
They have live music on the weekends which makes it a great hang out spot.
Will be continuing to go for many, many more years.

Ah Freeman’s! So many memories… and the best part is basically nothing has changed in the 10 years I have been frequenting this place!
I started going here when I was in high school, yes that long ago, and we would go here for lunch! Cheap, but more exciting than the typical fast food spots. They have the basic and classic for pub fare. Their potato skins are the great ones, not boats or wedges, but sliced potato with sooo much cheese and bacon bits! Mmmmm… The BEST!
They specialize in pizza, but I can’t even say what it is like because IF i have ever tried it, it was a long time ago!
I can vouch for their super duper extra cheesy garlic fingers. Friends of mine have even asked for less cheese and still they are a cheesy delight…(I personally and all for as much cheese as anyone wants to give me!)
The prices are low and the service is generally fantastic… the place is a little dingy and has not been updated in a while, but I am not picky so it doesn’t bother me! They also have some great beers and ciders and are open late, which is always a nice touch!
So if you can’t make it to New York… head down to Freeman’s…(it’s not really the same thing, but they do have a lot of NY memorabilia on the walls???)

Average North American semi-​Italian diner. The menu is huge and varied; the lunch specials are cheap; the draft beers are cold.
This location is a little dark, owing to the corridor-​shaped building with the raised seating by the window that blocks out some of the already-​meagre sunlight. The seating is mostly booths, so great for 2 – 4 people.
Sports TVs are on here and there, and I think they had a jukebox.
It’s so typically average: average menu of sandwiches and pastas, average prices, average brands of alcohol, average amount of fake New York-​Italian kitsch. Serviceable, but don’t expect to be delighted.

My lunch was good! Aside from the slightly under cooked batter, the fish was PERFECTLY cooked, so no worries!
I told our waitress, and they gave me a voucher for a free dish next time! Totally beyond what I expected!
I ate my whole meal (except the batter) an was very pleased with it, but they stand by their food and quality, I’m very happy to say I’m a BIG fan of Freeman’s, their service and their food!

A fixture on Quinpool for decades, my frequenting of Freeman’s has risen exponentially in the past year, being a destination for post-​softball beer and snacks and now that my girlfriend and I recently moved into the neighbourhood.
Freeman’s is the sort of spot that chain restaurants want to be, but can never quite pull off because they lack the history and authenticity. The old times ads, photos of celebs, records and random nick nacks that adorn the walls, nooks and crannies of Freeman’s are there because they’ve accumulated over years of being a successful neighbourhood pub and restaurant, not because they screened well with focus groups.
A living monument to the mind-​boggling idiocy of liquor regulations in Nova Scotia, Freeman’s has a distinctive restaurant half with cozy, covered booths and tables, and the lounge side where the bar, a handful of TVs and some more tables. Their stained glass light shades remind me of restos when I was a little kid. Tacky then, nostalgic now. And maybe still a little tacky, but they work here.
The menu consists of an eclectic mix of the typical pubs apps, burgers, sandwiches and wraps before crossing over to the Italian side with pastas and of course their pizza. Bonus points are allotted for their all day breakfast items, a bounty to lovers of breakfast and/​or people with irregular work schedules, of which I happen to be both. There are also well-​documented gluten-​free pizza options for the gluten-​tarded/​those on a trendy diet.
Freeman’s is primarily known for their pizza, and I’ve gotten it several times now. The chipotle pizza is a favourite, with a respectable amount of heat, compared to many pizzas or foods in general that claim to be spicy but aren’t. The house specialty pizza comes with Italian sausage, ground beef, feta, tomato, green pepper and red onions, and plenty of all of them, so be prepared for a rich, hearty ‘za. The crusts aren’t quite a thin crust and have a bit of airiness to them, but aren’t worth writing home about.
The grilled veggie salad is good; with mushrooms, tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, red peppers and onions, it’s moderately healthy without being boring. The accompanying pita crisps were tasty as well, but the tzatziki was a little weird, being overly thick and on the bland side.
Their version of potato skins aren’t so much actual hollowed out potato skins as you might anticipate so much as they are slices of skin-​on potatoes in a ramekin with a bunch of cheese and bacon on top. It isn’t an awful execution, and serves as an adequate as a carb/​cheese/​bacon delivery method.
On my most recent visit, I went the traditional route to see how their kitchen would fare, going with the spaghetti and meatballs, which also comes with a side salad (I went Caesar) and a couple slices of garlic bread. It’s a decently sized portion, especially for the $ 14 price tag; not enough to have you throw in the towel and take the rest home, but you’ll be leaving with a full belly. The sauce was ok, with a predominant oregano flavour, but not much depth otherwise. Four or five meatballs a bit smaller than golf balls adorned my spaghetti and they were good. They were beefy and seasoned well and held their form nicely, but also broke apart easily without being mushy inside. The side Caesar salad was more of a Brutus salad, killing the ideal of a Caesar salad with limp, yellow-​ish lettuce, bland dressing and your run-​of-​the-​mill, store-​bought croutons.
On the non-​food side of things, Freeman’s has become the new trivia locale for my friends and I. It’s really close to a few of us and it starts early (7ish) so you’re not up crazy late on a Tuesday night. The questions are a good mix of whatever you can imagine, with a 10 question music round bookend-​ed by two 25 rounds of general questions. Tickets are given out for random draw prizes, the winning team gets coupons for two free pizzas and they have a trivia season, with the top team claiming a prize after a few months of competition. It’s a good way to relax and pretend you’re using your brain, when all you’re really doing is plumbing the depths of your random knowledge and having a couple drinks.
It may not be a top of line sort of place, but Freeman’s is a solid spot to go to for a drink, trivia or to have a bite at.
