Living and working in the north end, I have frequented Smith’s often. Their baked goods are fresh and delicious. Sandwiches & breakfast are great. Pricing is good for the quality.
What brings my rating down:
— the meal food (beans, meat pie, quiche) tends to be salty,
— the coffee is good quality, but made too weak,
— service not consistently good.
— inappropriate clothing. Skimpy tank tops are for bars, not cafes

The food was adequate. The service was really cold from all staff members.
I get it. I was just some guy with a wife and kid from out of province passing through wanting something to eat. I didn’t expect to be treated poorly. Food was dropped on our table without a word.
Frankly, there are better bakeries with far better service elsewhere. Avoid unless you like sandwiches with a side of bad attitude.

We went to Smiths Bakery today for the first time and I’m afraid we wouldn’t go back.
The girl at the counter got our order wrong, and I won’t say she was rude, disinterested would be a better word.
The smoked meat sandwich was extremely fatty, I guess we just prefer Costco’s amazing smoked meat at a much better price. The quiche was filling but tough. Other than the very good coffee, the meal was not worth our time or money

I have been going to Smith’s Bakery for over 3 years. It is a good place to get some quick food and has a large set of «regulars». The coffee is what usually gets me in the morning where they have a self serve kiosk that usually has 4 – 5 selections of fresh Just Us! Coffee on the go. The breakfast sandwich is my favorite food item and uses their fresh bread, egg, bacon/​and or sausage, cheese, and toppings if you ask. At lunch time they have some good selections as well including «baked» pizza and awesome sandwiches.
Some tips: If your looking for hot bread the morning is the best time to show up. If your looking for a cheap lunch idea, stop by in the morning as they sometimes have half price slices of bakery pizza (day old). My favorite is fresh and hot cheese and ham biscuits with butter but you usually have to get these between 7am-​8am if you want them still warm.
My only complaint is the food can be a bit pricey which a breakfast sammy and coffee often tops out around $ 9 – 10 and a normal lunch would be similarly priced.

Smith’s is a cute little godsend on Agricola for those mornings when meetings force you out of bed before the cafés even open. Without enough time to walk to Java Blend, and no chance of waiting until FRED opens at 9am for my coffee, I staggered into Smith’s for a quick cup of joe.
Some neighbourhood regulars were already settling into what I can only assume is their daily morning routine — one making a coffee at the self-​serve area, the other catching up with the friendly staffer behind the counter which of course was already filled and covered with freshly baked uh… well…just about everything.
Ham and cheese tea biscuits, very fancy looking croissants, cupcakes, loaves, and more than I could take in before a cup of coffee was lovingly displayed. I’m not sure if they’ve changed sine Vanessa J’s review, but to me many of their treats looked meticulously wrapped and presented for gourmet sale –particularly those in the more dessert space rather than breakfast. This actually made for a cute contrast to the space itself which definitely doesn’t have that fancy vibe…
I paid a quick and easy $ 2.07 for a large cup of coffee (just coffee, no espresso drinks), helped myself to the Colombian blend (there were four other carafes to choose from), and was on my way already looking forward to coming back for a bite.

I recently tried Smith’s Bakery for the first time. It is a small spot on the corner of Agricola and Charles Street, I would often smell it walking by, but hadn’t taken the time to stop in. I finally got to give it a try.
The baked good here look homemade, this is both a positive in that you know it’s from scratch, but in my eyes also a slight negative, because I bake quite often and if I buy something from a bakery it’s because I want it to not only taste great, but look amazing too. I got a banana chocolate chip muffin, and because I arrived just after opening, it was still warm out of the oven. The banana flavour was underwhelming, but it had a nice texture.
I like that they offer Just Us! Coffee, however I don’t like that it is self serve, I don’t often drink coffee in the morning and if I do it’s generally because I’m too tired to function, which includes making my coffee.

This is a great little place to grab a sandwich, a brownie, or even their pizza. It’s a good meeting spot and very well priced.

I love walking by Smith’s Bakery in the early mornings as the smell of their baking permeates Agricola Street. The staff is friendly, the prices are decent and if you can get in there in time to pour over the day-​old discounted stuff, all the better! Some of their things can be a little dry at times but if that’s the worst thing that’s happened, I’ll take it :)

Bread just like my grandmother used to make. That’s what I think of when I think of Smith’s. The large, fluffy loaves of whole wheat, white and multigrain bread are a testament to quality and no preservatives.
And it doesn’t stop at bread. Smith’s offers a large selection of baked goods including rolls, cookies, muffins and biscuits. All of the baked goods are made from scratch. Most tempting to my sweet tooth are the amazing squares with delightful names like lemon commodore, millionaire and midnight mint.
I almost forgot the pies. The pies are mostly fruit based and are excellent value for the price. Were you invited to dinner? Pick one up on your way by and you’re guaranteed to be invited back.
If you are looking for something more substantial, Smith’s has a full line of lunch items including tasty sandwiches made with their own bread (the Cuban is excellent), pizza, lasagne and soups and chowders.
My most important purchase at Smith’s happens once a year. On my birthday I always get the chocolate pound cake with chocolate icing. It’s moist and chocolaty without being too rich. It also comes in vanilla.
You can eat in the informal, bright space or take out. A decent drink selection including San Pellergrino and Perrier drinks is available.
If you’re in the neighbourhood and hungry, pop in!

Smith’s Bakery & Café is just another Agricola Street treasure to love. Its got an old school charm, and the wafting scents of freshly baked bread don’t hurt either.
This spot has been around for decades, and its attention for good quality, wholesome breaded variety cannot go unnoticed. Besides selling its own variety of loaves, Smith’s offers fresh sandwiches, cookies, chocolate treats and all that jazz. Its a throw-​back to another time, when things were simple and white-​bread wasn’t the enemy. All in moderation, isn’t that the key?
Enjoy the finer things in life, and take a gander into Smith’s. Its service, small quarters and delicious goods won’t disappoint!

I used to go to Smith’s Bakery’s when Butch used to be there. I used to work across the street from this location and I remember when he would come over with some treats for me on Fridays.
My GF was driving back from lunch and wanted to stop into her favourite bakery to get her son in law some chocolate macaroons. And to my surprise I was walking into Smiths Bakery. It has changed with a fresh and new update look but the baked goods are still the same. I wish they could place this aroma in a bottle of perfume. lol
Well you know I left there with some treats. I too had to buy the large chocolate macs as well some CC cookies that were delicious.
I love the fresh bread but me eating white bread is not a good thing but on a special occasion I will be returning to Smith’s Bakery for a fresh loaf.

Smith’s Bakery was a regular spot of us, my brother had a business across the street for years. We would sit in the office and smell the fresh bread being baked. It really was torture on a daily basis.
So many a trip was accross the street. Always fresh baked goods, we liked the lemon squares. The ladies were always smiling and everyone enjoying the food.
I miss the smell daily now, but we still stop by to grab our favorites. Changes have taken place, but all for the better and the food is still as good.

I do love the smell of freshly baked rolls that are intoxicating as you walk in the door of Smith’s. It’s been around since 1932. How many establishments can boast that!
The café itself is small — seats 20 and the menu hasn’t changed in all the years. Simple, traditional sandwiches like egg salad, tuna salad, grilled cheese, even PB & J all served on their own bread, naturally.
Diner breakfasts with prices that can’t be beat. So if you’re looking for classic, family style, good as your mom made… this is the place to visit. And don’t forget to take home some of those delicious cookies and squares.

Smith’s is a classic sort of place, where you get the feeling it’s just a few ladies baking everything that’s available and all of the sandwiches are served with a side of plain Lay’s potato chips. I had the only vegetarian sandwich on offer — the egg salad — and it was decent. Washed it down with a Propellor root beer, which makes any meal better. Lots of tempting baked goods, many in bar form. Outdoor tables are great on a hot summer day.

As I was walking through the North end earlier today, the wafting scent of fresh baked bread caught me off-​guard and caused me to switch directions in the hopes of finding the source.
It didn’t take me long to stumble into ‘Smith’s Bakery & Café.’ The cute little bar stools and delicious baked goods certainly made me wish I’d found this place sooner! I ended up leaving with an almond raspberry square as well as one of the midnight mint bars. It’s going to be tough work to save the latter for Mark that’s for sure. These baked goods are great!
I definitely recommend giving this bakery a try!

Smith’s Bakery, which claims to be Halifax’s oldest independent bakery, has gone through many changes over the years. Right now it occupies a comfortable space as a little eat-​in or take-​out café, with lots of yummy sweet and savoury goodies on the menu.
Small picnic tables outside make for great people-​watching on Agricola Street on a warm summer day. I enjoy grabbing a warm fruit turnover (baked on the premises) and a hot «Just Us» fair-​trade coffee, and spending some quality time with the artsy north-​end folks on the street. But there are full breakfast and lunch items on offer, as well, and friendly staff to serve ‘em up.

The bread at Smith’s was light and fresh and I will go back for it. The counter staff is very friendly and enthusiastically recommend their favorites. While we had a delicious chocolate macaroon there, we tried the ginger cookies and were appalled! They were hard and salty!
