Well… it’s a Subway, but my sandwich artist was knowledgeable and conversational about the life and art of Master P, so, three-stars!

Busy. Busy. Busy. Definitely one of the busier Subways in Halifax. Despite what others have reported, I’ve never had a problem with a lack of items. But then I’m not going on a Saturday night at 4 am… I think they’ve recently hired a bunch of new staff because they seem a lot more efficient though they sometimes lack that personal touch the older(slightly slacker) staff had. Food is… Well, it’s Subway, it’s pretty much what you’d expect. They are definitely making an effort to keep the space clean. Always a challenge with the high turnover of customers. But the space is generally bright and offers intriguing people watching opportunities at the bus stop right outside. I’m not a huge fan of the awkward double doors to get in. Tip: Go at off-peak hours. Go a little early or late for lunch because this place gets swamped then.

Well friends, here I am reviewing another franchise that can be found in nearly every small town across this country. Do we frequent these establishments for the service? The experimental menu? The adventure in cuisine? That moment you answer the question, «Been to any good restaurants lately?» and your response produces a twinkle in the questioner’s eye? No, we go to Subway because, much like a date with myself, it’s fast and cheap. Subway on Spring Garden has two things working for it: 1) It’s open 24-hours 2) It makes you feel good on the inside to walk past McDonald’s and order fast food disguised as a healthy meal. Being open 24-hours like its neighbour McDonald’s, I would never expect this particular Subway between the hours of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to be a shining example of cleanliness, customer service or to act as anything more than a pit stop on the way home. Like I said in my review for McDonald’s, these employees are tired. They’re working backshift in the food service industry in a university town. If you don’t cut them some slack, you’re a monster because I don’t know anyone who can be 100 per cent perky making sandwiches at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning. So why the two stars? Well, taking into account my understanding and empathy for the location thrust upon these sandwich artisans, I like to think that my only demand is not unreasonable — have food to prepare. The fact that you are open 24-hours is no secret to the intoxicated boys and girls of Halifax so I don’t know why you act all surprised and defensive when somebody makes a snide comment about«being out of green pepper». Here’s a great story: One day I went to Subway on Spring Garden in the middle of the afternoon. I was on a lunch break, the sun was shining and I thought a sandwich would surely be an appropriate choice for this glorious summer day. As I walked up to the counter to order the usual the dude working says, «Before you order, I just have to say we’re out of everything green». Clearly puzzled by this I asked what he meant to which he replied, «If you want, like, lettuce or pickles or anything green on your sandwich, I can’t help you out.» Here’s a bit of a late breaking story — most of the key ingredients to a successful sandwich are GREEN. Otherwise, I’m just slapping some meat and cheese on a toasted bun and if THAT’S the case, I’m just going to McDonald’s where they understand me. Can you just prepare for the inevitable shortages that you seem to run into every weekend?

Whenever I go there they’re missing, well, half the ingredients.

I am not a huge Subway eater. In fact, Subway sandwiches only make it into my mouth if I’m on a road trip and in an area where vegetarian fare is hard to come by. Veggie sub to the rescue. But if I’ve been drinking for the evening and am headed home, I would never argue with my boyfriend’s declarations that it’s «time for cookies». Time for cookies is right! Subway gets the award for best(though perhaps only) late night cookie vendor in town. As we are typically inebriated upon entering this establishment, we end up buying way too many cookies and wake up the next morning with incriminating crumbs in the couch and a half-finished bag on the table. But hey, there’s nothing like leftover cookies in the morning… On another note, I’ve actually had really great service each time I’ve been in. Either super friendly or just plain helpful(like steering drunk me away from the idea that in order to diversify my cookie haul I would need to buy that one that had fallen under the trays…) I’m sure it’s hard to like your Subway job at 1am on a Saturday morning, but these dudes have covered it up well.
