I was happy when I heard that Sully’s had moved south a bit from up in the Hydrostones and down to Agricola. While not far enough down to be right in my neighbourhood, closer is still better. Funnily enough, I made my way to the new location for the first time after visiting my girlfriend while she was at work up in the Hydrostones. As per my usual lunchtime MO, it was closer to mid-afternoon than noon and I was the only customer in the place. The room is a good size and could seat around 50 at its mismatched tables and chairs. I don’t know what it was, whether the place isn’t quite old enough, dark enough or Irish enough, but the lack of uniformity wasn’t charming me. A mix of old and new photos of people and sports teams adorn the side wall while a nice large window fronts on Agricola St. The Harp logo on it was encouraging, but unfortunately only Budweiser was available at the time. I still took this over Pepsi mind you, as if I’m going to have some empty carbs, booze is going to win over sugar every time. The laid back guy who I assumed was the owner left me a small menu while he went to grab my unfortunate beer. I was pulled in a few different directions, so when he came back I asked for a recommendation, to which he answered the pulled pork. So I went with that, plus macaroni salad on the side. Being that I was the only one there, my plate of food came quite quickly. There was a fairly generous pile of pork on my sandwich, topped with some coleslaw. The meat had a bit of smokiness and a hint of heat on the back, and had a nice texture — moist without being mushy. The slaw was a fairly typical creamy coleslaw and added some crunch to each bite. All in all, an enjoyable sandwich. The macaroni salad was also tasty — lightly peppery and with a little pop from what I think was mustard, and some added colour, if minimal nutrition, from bits of carrot and corn thrown in. While it was a decent lunch, it wasn’t a cheap one at $ 20 for all the above, tax and tip. My bland beer suddenly soured. Bad beer should always be cheap, it’s pretty much a social contract. Sully’s is a solid spot to go to for your protein fix and I hope they can survive the grinder of the Halifax restaurant scene to earn that laid back, neighbourly feel that they’re shooting for.

Roast beef sub is the best ever. Everything else is good too!

Like Ellen My husband and I had tried a sample of Sully’s a the Unilocal Artstravaganza. I thought the samples were pretty good and although at the event I had had enough to be defined as a full size sandwich, we still wanted to return to see what else they had to offer. I have to agree that the décor was sporadic and didn’t really follow a theme, but that didn’t bother me any, to me it felt more homey. As with eating in any place, it looked clean, so beyond that I kind of don’t care about the décor. I also agree that the entry way is kind of confusing with the spot to order up a set of stairs. Thinking back on the layout, it makes sense, but I think something a little more needs to be done to show that’s where you go. My husband and I each has a Montréal smoked meat sandwich and it was amazing, Most importantly(something I find a common annoyance with sandwiches in a restaurant) the middle of the sandwich was warm! I don’t know how many times cold meat in the middle of a warm sandwich has made a good meal disappointing. I noticed many places are serving chips with their meals as opposed to any other sort of side, which I think just added to the hominess of this place. The service was good and fairly speedy. As with any new(ish) small business, dealing with service issues is a learning curve and I hope the negative reviews will give this place another try.

A story of heartache and hunger. Who wants that in a food review? Not me! I had heard good things about Sully’s and thought I’d have lunch there with a great friend who is also a foodie. We arrived at 11:40 and the place was empty. We both ordered the Roast Beef sub based upon what I had heard from others. Took a seat for a few minutes when someone came over to tell us that the roast beef was unavailable, not out of the oven yet. Bummer! Option presented to us was a pulled pork sandwich. This is when we should have left and spent our money somewhere else. I’m a BBQ guy and I’m fussy but will try things. What landed in front of me wasn’t what I consider a decent pulled pork sandwich. Two bites were enough for me as the now soaked Kaiser bun split in half. Same gentleman came over and asked how things were. I usually chirp in «Okay, thanks» even if it wasn’t. «It’s not for me, I’m a BBQ guy and this isn’t cutting it» was my response. «Sorry about that» was his as he walked out the door. My friend and I both have experience in the customer service World and were stunned with the outcome. By now others were arriving and getting roast beef sandwiches, why not switch us back, offer to help, do something. Stupified by what happened. Sitting here two hours later still hungry, but not hungry enough to think about a pulled pork from Sully’s again. If only we had gotten the roast beef like we wanted.

So I had the exact opposite experience of Adam B. here. I’ll try to condense this as much as possible, because there were a LOT of things Mike and I didn’t like about our visit. — The first time we had Sully’s sliders was at the Unilocal Artstravaganza at the Art Gallery. I asked for a sammich without cheese as I’m lactose intolerant. The pork sliders had no cheese and were delicious. The sliders in the resto? Have cheese. Not listed on the menu. I had to send my sliders back. — About those sliders. They were cold, tasteless and tiny. Nothing like the awesome sliders at the event. They were as different as night and day. — Total wait time for Mike’s pulled pork sandwich? Twenty-five minutes. With only one other table of customers. And mine(just sliders, mind you) took even longer. Then had to be sent back anyway. — Still hungry after finishing food. They basically took a no-name hot dog bun and cut it into thirds. I came home and ate an actual meal. — This place has an identity crisis. Is it an Irish pub? A sandwich shop? A sports bar? The décor is all over the place, but the dominant theme is «I really miss my old football days at university.» Not an attractive place. — Menus not readily available. Confusing upon entering, with a staircase and a «Place Order Here» sign at the top of the stairs … with no menu in sight. Hidden on the second level is the counter where you pay(and where you find their menu), not visible from the front. Overall? An incredibly disappointing experience. Mike did like his sandwich, although he was still hungry too. Only a few chips as a side. The slaw is like that stuff you get in a nameless tub at No Frills. The owner mentioned that almost everything was made in-house. This was not evident at all during our visit. Thanks but NOTHANKS.

I have always wanted to try Sully’s. I heard the buzz when they opened their old location. I even eyeballed the place a few times as I drove down to Seaview Park. The one thing that stopped me from going in was cash, Sully’s was cash only and I am not that well prepared! To tell the truth, I’m kind of lazy… Fast forward to last week, I noticed the big awning of Sully’s new location on Agricola St. Sweet new location, first sunny day of the year, hungry wife(she carries cash) and plenty of space to park out front. Done deal. When we walked in the place was empty. The dining room was quite spacious, with beautiful old floor boards and mismatched furniture. The walls were decorated with vintage framed sports photos. A vintage coke cooler and wind up record player completed the rustic/vintage look. The friendly girl working the counter got our eyes on a menu and gave some good suggestions in no time. My wife and I decided to split the smoked meat and the roast beef. Best part was, although we happened to have some cash on hand. SULLY“S NOWTAKESDEBIT! After ringing up our order we grabbed our soda and took a seat in the corner. Sully himself came out to deliver the food. He chatted with us about where he sources his meat, pickles, sauerkraut, mustard. EVERYTHING, We really enjoyed our meal. So much so that we ordered the pulled pork to split as well. My wife instagrammed the whole affair, of course. The owner of this shop is such a friendly and welcoming guy. We were really quite impressed. We have been back a few times in the past week and will likely make this place a lunchtime staple.
