I’m a fairly new dog-mom and I will admit I did not pay much attention to any pet-related retailers or service providers around HRM. When I decided that I could finally get a dog after waiting many years for the right time, I wandered into The Hound a few days before I picked up our dog. I was greeted by a very welcoming staff member who was immediatley curious about our new family member who would arrive in a few days. She asked about her breed, her size and gave me some very good advice on temperament, and activity levels. I expected to end up walking out of The Hound with a much lighter pocket, but the store owner explained that given the breed and age of our new pooch, it wouldn’t be a great idea to fork over the 50 $ dog bed that she would most likely shred with glee. She also explained that her breed had a coat that did not required a lot of baths and so I saved some money by not having to buy puppy-shampoo. She also gave me, free of charge, a dog treat for her to chew, since she would be doing a lot of chewing and told me to let her try it and if she liked it I could come back and buy her one. So, I will admit that if our dog needs anything at all, we go directly to The Hound where she too, is greeted with lots of pats, and a treat! She loves The Hound! The store is well stocked, there is ample parking, a vet is located right next door. They also provide grooming services and a drop in nail clipping service for 18 $. The store is bright, clean, and stock is competitively priced. They stock food, toys, treats, bedding, grooming products, safety products, leashes, just about anything you’d need for your pup! You are welcome to bring your dog in, but I would use a leash because it is a smaller retail outlet and they have displays that an excited puppy could knock over.(Yes she did… but it wasn’t the end of the world to the staff)

Place rating: 5 Halifax, Canada
Owned by the folks who used to run the House of Dogs in Halifax, The Hound is the new location for BobbiAnne Beaulac’s dog grooming and pet supplies business. This location is a bit of a drive from Halifax, on the way to Peggy’s Cove basically, but worth every minute of the drive. BobbiAnne does the grooming while her mother, Ann, is up front, and every time I walk into their shop they make me feel like my dog is the most special dog ever born on this earth. I mean, who could wish for more? We just come in for a nail clipping every once in a while, and when we do, they shower my dog with treats and regale us with dog stories. They know my dog’s particular foibles and are gentle and careful when they clip her nails. The shop is well-stocked with food, treats, toys and leashes, and they can help their customers find any conceivable dog accessory imaginable, if they don’t already have it in stock. But the best thing about this shop is the people: Ann and BobbiAnne love dogs, and it shows.
