Little disappointed as they advertise themselves as local and organic. As they might be local, one of the most important ingredients which is the dairy milk, is not organic. So I paid extra for basically the same latte I would get anywhere. The BLT sandwich on GF bread was good. Too bad… I had hoped to have found my organic milk coffee shop in Hamilton but nope… Still searching. It’s so dark and cold in there, cleanliness is questionable. It’s a hippy place by that doesn’t mean it can’t be clean and cozy. So I don’t think I’ll go back again.

I love this place. They are the nicest people and have great food and service. I love the local art that is featured on the walls and you can see local talent perform as well. It is really not that expensive. They accommodate my food allergies gratefully and my request for a particular sandwich with different vegetables when they didn’t have the greens that were supposed to go on it. Because of their thorough care in preparing my meal I was safely able to have a sandwich just like someone without celiac disease and I did not have any problems. They ask if it is an allergy or preference which I think is fair considering the number of people that are gluten free for other reasons. It is also fair to the kitchen to not need to thoroughly clean down the kitchen for every person with a gluten free preference. My sandwich was delicious as was the coffee. I always get the dark roast. Thanks a lot.

Very friendly service, but unfortunately their coffee was as light as water! One of the waitresses gave me free espresso shots because of that, though, so it made up for it. They were super friendly and it was a nice atmosphere. I wish they’d have some ceiling fans, though! Hot in there.

As a coffee snob, I like to explore and know every city by its coffee shops. Homegrown Hamilton stands out among others as it’s more than just a coffee shop. This is quite a hipster place for social gathering, and artistic cultivations. The walls are full of art works and there is a stage for live music! I ordered an americano and roasted red pepper and apple grilled cheese. The americano is really smooth and well above average franchise coffee store. It’s missing the complexity and caramel taste in my opinion, but consider they roasted all the coffee beans in-house, it’s pretty incredible! The grilled cheese is AMAZING, just what you need in this cold winter.

No air conditioning, no wifi. I thought this was a coffee shop. Service was super slow when I came. There’s a small patio out front. A big plus is its location near downtown Hamilton. Their grilled cheese sandwich is delicious but having no wifi drags the stars down. Lots of room in the venue. Pro tip: They also serve beer.

I was really exited to try Homegrown Hamilton having seen the previous reviews. I ordered a latte and a grilled cheese sandwich. For whatever reason the server needed to call the order back to the kitchen at least three times which was excessive considering it was a simple sandwich order. However, the latte was pretty good and came nice and hot, just how I like it. Homegrown Hamilton has a nice local feel inside and a mix of clientele which makes for a pleasant ambience. There is a small stage at the front and plenty of seating inside. There is a small patio out front, although there were no tables set up. Overall, a pleasant place to grab a quick coffee or bite to eat. Negative points: They don’t have WiFi! I thought every coffee shop had this nowadays?! There was a DSL modem and an Airport Express behind the counter so this would not be difficult to implement and would make me visit here a lot more. In the 10 minutes I was waiting for my sandwich, another person asked about WiFi so there is definitely a demand, and a customer expectation for it. On the plus side, they serve beer which is pretty cool!

«Caffeine leads to depression… Makes you all irritable.» — Coffee and Cigarettes(2003) What a disappointing cuppa-joe. I’m a big coffee drinker, so when in town on a business trip and my client raved about this place, I was excited. The place pre-brews coffee and has it set up on a side bar like a breakfast buffet at a hotel. Your choice is medium or dark roast and it just sits there. So I decided to get fresh ground coffee by ordering a mocha… I thought I was gaming the system. It took over 5 minutes(there were two guys behind the counter and weren’t brewing any other drinks). When I got the coffee, it was lukewarm at best. How is this possible when thru just ground beans, brewed the coffee AND steamed the milk? The chocolate flavor was non-existent — the whole thing tasted like a watered down hot chocolate made with Nesquik and powdered/instant coffee. Sad. I’m not sure how they stay in business? Maybe all the vegan and gluten-free fare… Coffee certainly is not their strong suit. I looked longingly at the other 3 coffee shops we walked past on the way back to the office and hoped for a better java.

Although Homegrown has seemed to change quite a bit in the past year and a half, it’s still a cozy place for social gatherings, coffee, and good live music. I desperately miss their gluten-free vegan veggie burger. It was made from scratch by hand by their old chef. I used to order it a few times a month and salivate at the thought.(Of the taste of the burger, not of the chef making it.) I also wish the desserts would be vegan and gluten free more often. I find myself defeatedly waddling over to other shops to get treats now, although when they have the(vegan/gluten-free) almond power bar in from Gratitude Food, I am always happy to order it.(But it’s often hidden away in the fridge with no sign or photo that it’s available?) It’s decadent. Must try. The only other thing that makes me twitch is the potential the place has if better lighting were to be installed. Complete, but DIM track lighting & maybe a fixture instead of fluorescents. That makes 110% difference in atmosphere and magic, which determines how long people stay, whether or not they go there for a coffee date, and how much they order. Anyways that’s my updated review ^_^ I still like Homegrown, okay?

Great foo and atmosphere, but sometimes a bit slow, food is worth the wait though.
