The Tavern on George

I’ve been there fairly often and the drinks are always top notch and the food is out of this world. The people behind the bar know their stuff and are more than happy to make suggestions to find what you may like.

Another gem in the Hamilton area!
I’m a big fan of this style of cocktail bar. I may have wrongly judged Hamilton since I didn’t think a place like this could exist there.
I have been here for cocktails once, post holiday party and we filled the place which could have swayed how much I was loving the vibe there. I love their bench seating, this place would be a dream for a birthday party or other social gathering.
Their cocktails are unique and delicious — I am a huge negroni fan and really loved their smoked rendition. It was insane how smokey it was! Lots of people were talking about how awesome their cocktails are.
I also got a chance to sample some late night food, including delicious beet salad, cheesy fries and regular fries and everything was great.
The service was also speedy, especially considering we rolled in with about 40 people close to midnight, AND ordered food. I am impressed Tavern on George!

Found the place based on Unilocal reviews. The food was pretty good. I got a few drinks neat and their pours are very short and short pours are a sin for a tavern. I’ll try it again to see if it’s better, but watch your drink orders.

If I could give this place 100 stars I would. The whiskey sours are straight out of Ireland. The bartenders are the friendliest people I have ever met. The beer selection is amazing! Seriously the best place for cocktails I’ve been in a very long time!

Decent food, awful service… had to seat ourselves, the waitress didn’t even bring our menus til like 15 mins later after asking like 5 or 6 times for it. also she seemed like vaguely drunk? Seemed friendly enough at first but also with an undertone of condescension? I try to be impartial as I work as a server myself but wow just like… not great service. Took like 10mins for us to pay as well and she overcharged my friend double and was like «oh that seems right» after we tried to double-​check before she realized it was defiiiiiiinitely not the right price. Also she kept trying to flirt with one of my friends which was funny but kind of weird? And seemed very distracted by random things like how she had blood on her fingers but oh no it was ketchup which would’ve been fine except she went f**k in front of us which was kind of inappropriate… an interesting experience to say the least. Definitely will not be coming back.
Maybe she was having a rough day but she definitely didn’t seem completely sober.?

I have been here twice now and I’ve loved each time. The first time was late at night to get some grub and a couple whiskey cocktails. The 2^nd was to try and catch the Cavaliers game while enjoying those same cocktails.
Each time had a different bartender but they both were great. Very knowledgeable about the beers and spirits and friendly. The first time I ate and the food was really good. The 2^nd time I just had a Manhattan b/​c they don’t have any TV’s and I was trying to catch the game.
I would recommend this place highly.

Awesome food, incredibly knowledgable bartender. Menu and beer list are on chalk boards, because what they have it is what is currently good. Boy was it all good!

This place was recommended to me by a friend who knows their beer. I am a craft beer enthusiast so always excited to see more places having it as a focus. I was not disappointed. I guess it’s not «new» but under new ownership and has been completely overhauled and renovated — formerly known as «Urban Tavern on hess».
–Fully stocked fridge of well selected premium micro-​brews, both local and speciality imports.
–5 well selected taps, rotating frequently
–Will (bartender) and Kyle (Chef) both really know their beers and are happy to chat about it, and seem to value their customers opinion for feedback.
–Great patio
Our appetizer was the Tempura Green Beans — amazing, light, and the perfect amount of batter. I had the Double Cheeseburger & fries which was touted as «the best burger in the city». It very well may be — just a perfectly made juicy and flavorful burger, ground fresh, using 7 year old aged cheddar. Fries were perfect. Ketchup is house-​made. My girlfriend had the Pork Taco’s — also stellar, house made fresh shells, yum.
We went at 7pm on Saturday and it wasn’t too packed so we got to get to know the staff quite quickly. I heard that later in the night on weekends they get the Hess spillover, and subsequently it gets busy and the bar does get a bit backed up, but it’s likely they will hire more staff in the future. We will be back soon.

Was here for a birthday party on a Sunday night and had a fun time! Their patio is massive with tons of comfortable chairs. The bar is accessible from both the inside and out so you can get your drinks quickly. Price was pretty cheap (about $ 8 domestic pints). Although the selection of beer was pretty limited (they had 4 i believe), they had a nice variety; also had the usual selection of liquor.
The most surprising part was the appetizers, they were massive portions and tasted amazing. Nachos were loaded (with cheese, jalapenos, etc.), cheese sticks were plentiful, and the french fries were homemade (none of that frozen costco crap).
Décor was very modern, everything looked freshly painted and washrooms were clean (surprising for a bar). They had a couple TV’s that were set to different channels if that’s your thing. Lots of seating inside, but i can definitely see coming here for the patio alone. I’m not a Hamilton local so no idea how it compares to the surrounding bars.

Urban Tavern is an old location under new management in the Hess area in Hamilton. I believe it was recently opened and this would explain a couple things…
First of all — Facility:
There is a smaller inside bar and a really big patio. If you get there early enough, you can snap some of the super comfy wicker furniture.
Inside there are a few tall tables and tall stools, as well as an ample long bar.
Drinks:
The beer selection is pretty limited so far. I am assuming this is because they are fairly new. Nonetheless, they have the basics on tap and some micro brews in the fridge. Cocktails and such are available. There is, however, so single malt whisky. This makes me sad, but I’ll manage.
Food:
The food is outstanding. WAAAAY better than one would expect. The wings have an outstanding flavour. I like them a little more mild than they normally come — but both mild and normal were awesome.
There is a meat /​cheese tray that is superb, and the burgers are delicious. I strongly recommend you eat here.
Music:
So far they seem to have live acoustic music saturday afternoons, and DJs during the night. I’ve been to both and enjoyed them immensly.
Summary:
Doing really well for new management, I like the changes and am looking forward to seeing how it grows.
