Legacy Wood Crafts

I have been a very happy customer of Legacy Wood Crafts for about 20 years now. I first discovered them at a booth at Granville Island Market and have returned many times to the various Farmer’s Markets in Vancouver and Whistler to pick up more pieces and to share as gifts. Their product is a display of natural beauty and every piece is unique. And they’re not just cutting boards. I’ve used larger pieces as a side table top in my living room. I’ve also used larger, very unique cuts as charcuterie platters for when I entertain. They’re always a show stopper and a conversation piece. I have had my cutting boards for 20 years now and they’re just as good as when I first got them. They re-​planed my table top for free so it could be restored to it’s original beauty after using it as a cutting board for many years. They are also very friendly people and their customer service is top notch. Can’t say enough good things about them!

From what I have seen from their samples, Legacy Wood Crafts makes very good products.
My experience with their customer service is another matter. I visited when they were at a local market in Vancouver. I wanted a custom made cutting board and I left them a sample of a board with the dimensions and design I wanted.
I was told they could make it for me and I could pick it up when they returned to the market. They said they would email me to let me know the exact cost. They didn’t email me, so I contacted them. They told me they were out of wood of the required size.
So I returned to the market the following week, making the trip for the express purpose of picking up the sample cutting board. I was told that they regularly get wood in of the required size and now that they had the dimensions, they would email me to confirm that I still wanted a board made.
They never bothered to contact me and given their lack of customer service I’ve given up on them.

Ok, cutting boards are something I never really thought about before finding out about Legacy Wood Crafts. I thought you just buy a cheapo board at the cooking supply shop, or if you want to splurge you pay a bit more. A no brainer. That was until I saw these boards!
These folks make the most unique and interesting cutting boards I have seen. You really have to see the beautiful figured maple boards, where every piece is unique. The boards are hand oiled with 100% tung oil and a cheese cloth, yielding a perfect food safe surface that lasts a really long time.
They go by the name «Maple Magic» as well. They started out by using salvaged fir scraps that were left after milling huge beams in BC that were used for temples in Japan. They then expanded into using Western Broadleaf Maple as well. They dry the wood without using a kiln in natural dehumidification rooms. They do all of their milling on a small kerf band mill to reduce waste.
You can sometimes find them setup at various Farmer’s markets around town. I got one of their large boards about 2 years ago, and have been incredibly happy. It has 3 smooth sides, and 1 side that is left with natural rough edges that have been waxed. It is an incredibly unique piece that everyone that sees it comments on. But every piece they have would get the same comments. Really nice products!
They also guarantee the boards and will even re-​sand them for you if they get too chopped up over the years of usage. Haven’t needed to do that yet, as it holds up really well to a very sharp chef’s knife.
