Gastro Beer 101 @ Hungry Brew Hops

Belated review. The first and foremost a-​ha moment I had was why there weren’t really cool, relaxed gastropubs in Markham? I was impressed by the venue on my way up to the private room, and the impression was reinforced when I saw the bar area, the chalk board beer menu and the enlarged head shots of movie stars on wall.
Back to the event. I knew zippo about craft beer. I walked up to the nice guy behind tubs of beer and he said «perfect!». I had all 4 beers. I enjoyed the pumpkin beer the most. Oh, the food — it was delicious. And we had wait staff services. I was not used to be waited in Elite events; I was used to rushing to the ladies and gentlemen holding the plate of food and grabbed the food. Thus, the high services level was, may I say, enjoyable. The food looked good, as evidenced by the pictures.
What I liked most was the education session of the event. I learned about hop. I learned about how small local breweries could rotate their offerings by season, but big breweries can’t do it as easily. I learned about the sweat and love that the owner and the executive chef had put in to create this cool, relaxed gastropub.
Again, why can’t I find a nice gastropub in my neck of the wood? Thanks Unilocal and Kris for this well planned and executed event. You just gave me more reasons to visit Newmarket.

WOW! WOW! WOW!
I’m pretty sure this was the best Unilocal event of life. Kris you had me at craft beer! Several craft beer options from local breweries? Don’t mind if I do! Add that to epic gastropub food and I think I’ve died and gone to heaven!
Thanks to T-​bone of Great Lakes Brewery for keeping us lubricated with some awesome craft beer, I especially love that pumpkin ale and Canuck pale ale. Thanks to Hungry Brew Hops for providing the awesome food, those fries and juicy burger will haunt my dreams (everyone should be flocking to Newmarket for these tasty treats).
A HUGE thank you to Kris for organizing such an amazing event, you have now set a precedent, I expect craft beer at every event from here on out ;-). As always it was awesome to mingle with Unilocal elite, my plus 2 had an amazing time too!

It’s been a couple days & I’m still thinking of the yummy goodness we were lucky enough to sample! Thank you to Kris, Boris & Hungry Brew Hops for organizing another fantastic 5 star event!
We are DEFINITELY coming back in the near future. I’m not a huge meat eater but omg… that burger was absolutely amazing & to die for. Likely the best burger I’ve ever had. I’m very curious about the fried chicken the chef was describing. WOWWW ^^ The crunchy thin crust mediterranean pizza was also very delish & tasty!
It was nice to get educated on Beer101. Who knew about the steps involved? It was informative & interesting. Makes you appreciate it even more! I’m not really a beer drinker but I enjoyed the pumpkin brew from Great Lakes Brewery! Yummy!
Cannot wait to be back! Lots of free parking at the back ^^

What could be a better night than great beer, food and company?! So happy to attend another great event at one of my favourite resto in York Region! I have probably been living in a cave or something, but I didn’t know there was a Main St in Newmarket until Kris posted this event. Being an avid beer lover that I am, I couldn’t wait to try this place out and went to try it out before this event! I’m happy to say that both visits were spectacular!
I’m really glad I got to try out the main menu this time, as I only tried their lunch menu. That HBH burger was to die for! I also really enjoyed the pizza and jalapeño cornbread. The 4 beers that we got to try out were amazing as well. My favourite has got to be the Saison Du Pump (can’t wait to get my hands of some!).
Big thank you to Great Lakes Brewery and HBH for preparing and giving us a quick beer and menu 101! And of course another big thank you to Kris for organizing this amazing event and my new tumbler!

Free delicious food and free beers to try. A free beer lesson from Great Lake Brewery. It was just awesome. Thank you HBH for the great food and service. I received a lovely schwag — a Unilocal buddy digital clock, and oh my it made my day complete: D
I stayed for one more drink and snack at the bar area of HBH after the event. The pig oil French fries are so ‘unhealthly’ good!!! The chef of HBH does a good job;). I hope Fruli on tap will be back here but 28 beers on taps to choose from is pretty amazing. Our bartender was very professional and nice. I did have a real good time yesterday night!

Yes!!! 5 star event. My husband and I didn’t almost make it to this event. Since it was a bit far for us, but we were determine to come! The area is fantastic, it is located on main street, such a cute little area, there is a 3 hour free parking near the restaurant for those who are driving.
Where do I start? I love the décor of this place, its so unique. There’s just so much character to every piece of art they have here.
The food and drinks were fantastic, I couldn’t get enough of the fries! I also love the pumpkin beer and I’m not even a beer person! Thanks for the Beerology 101. It was very informative. Also thanks to the chef for introducing the food to us as well. I really enjoyed the ribs as well, wow!!! Best ribs ever — it was fall off the bone good!
Lastly, thanks Kris for hosting, as always, love the energy you always provide to the crowd.
I will def come back here for that water pork fried chicken they are famous for.

Great event organized by Kris. Amazing beer from our vendors and I especially loved the Saison Dupump from Great Lakes Brewery! Food was amazing as well, I was super impress with the HBH Burger, the Curry Ketchup that came with the fires and the Sticky Ribs! The decoration was nicely done as well, you can tell the owner Boris spent a lot of money making this place look this awesome! I will for sure come visit this place again on a regular dinning night. Thank you for finding this amazing restaurants in an area I would rarely visit Kris! You have indeed found a gem!

Another great event, courtesy of Kris and Hungry Brew Hops. I wasn’t ecstatic about the long drive from North York, but the food, drinks, and company made it worth my while.
Though the sampling of fries, jalapeño cornbread, Calabrese pizza, and beer-​braised ribs were tasty, it was the HBH burger that will bring me back. All of the beers offered something a bit different (e.g. a citrus-​y Canuck Pale Ale and Pumpkin seasonal brew), but the Stone Hammer Oatmeal Coffee Stout was definitely my favorite — as my numerous empty cups can attest to.
Was a nice touch to have the Great Lakes Brewery rep offer a bit of historical background and plans for the company. Also appreciated the chef and owner of HBH taking the time to address us as well.
Great time — will be back for the aforementioned burger AND this pork-​water fried chicken we heard so much about.

As expected, this event was a hit. Although I was a bit late we got to try the different beers from Great Lakes Brewery. There was the Seasonal Pumpkin Beer, Canuck Pale Ale, Stone Hammer (Oatmeal Coffee Stout), and Spark House Red Ale. All the beers were delicious, but I’d say my favourite was a toss up between the Pumpkin Beer and the Canuck Pale Ale. They both had a nice crisp taste that I’d enjoy over and over again. The Stone Hammer tasted just like coffee, I would be able to start every day with one of these! I swear I’m not an alcoholic. Last but not least the Spark House Red Ale reminded me of the Rickards Red but more citrusy.
We got to sample some of the food from Hungry Brew Hops, but we missed the Cornbread and Fries :(We tried the Burger, two types of Pizza and the Ribs. I love the Ribs and the Burgers. They were so moist and flavourful.
Overall this event was great where we got to try the different beers and foods, and we got to mingle and meet other Unilocalers and Elite Unilocalers. Until next time Jimstar Out!

Another 5 star event! Fantastic food, wonderful service and some really cool swag. I think I will leave the beer reviews to other Elites (wine drinker here.).
Loved all the food, particularly the garlic fries, which were the spotlight of the evening. I couldn’t stop eating them! Calabrese pizza was delicious and the sticky ribs too. The burgers were so juicy and I really liked the caramelized mushrooms on top.
Owner Boris and the chef came up to tell us about all the food and drinks. He gave us all such a mouth watering description of their crispy fried chicken I think I can’t wait to be back!
Yes guys and girls, this is some spectacular pub food… as good as it gets. Thank you Kris and HBH! Awesome night. And now that I have a Unilocal bike bell I can’t wait to get a bike!

I had an awesome time tonight at the Hungry Brew Hops.
Its making me sad to be exposed to so many UNREAL places in Newmarket because it is oh, so far from home.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed every part of tonight’s experience.
I loved the fries, the pulled pork burger (oh my gawd), the ribs, and the beer.
I couldn’t even pick a favourite.
The pumpkin spiced, the coffee one, the bitter fruity one… of the four that I tried tonight, I loved them all equally.
A huge thanks to Great Lakes Brewery, Kris, and Hungry Brew Hops.
I can’t wait to visit again. I really want to try the house beer here.
