crap. BBA program won’t help you land a good job. Go to BCIT instead.

I’ve attended Cap U twice in my life; One when it was Capilano College under the film studies and a few years later (recently) under the culinary program.
My primary review is for the film program. I came here based on the reputation at the time of the course being better than some in the city (you know who you are).
For what you paid and what the course had to offer seemed weak. The course was divided into sectionals: Lighting and camera, script writing, editing, AC, history of film, and business of film. Some teachers in the course had experience in the industry that were relevant and had a lot to offer while others were out dated.
Please note that my experience compared to the current course may have changed as well as the teachers, however, I know that most of these are still in existence ’cause I have some of my friends nieces currently enrolled. Through conversation with them I feel that situations have not changed. Of course names will not be mentioned as that is irrelevant to the review.
Editing: Bi-​polar teacher that was supportive one moment and screaming at your the next for no reason. Not enough computers to go around to encourage or allow students to work on projects.
History of film: You watch movies all day, something that I can do on my own for free on Netflix. Teacher was sexiest.
Script Supervising: One of the most valued courses for me. I have an eye for mistakes and love the technical side of things in regards to continuity. Aside from a PA on major productions, for independent movies I did a lot of script supervising. Teacher was warm, knowledgeable and she made things make sense.
Camera & Lighting: Learned some basics, however, with new lenses, editing and lighting this soon became an outdated course. The basics still hold value today.
Business of Film: Teacher had an awesome sense of dark sarcasm and humor, we got along great. After learning about the business, financial numbers seen very interesting to you.
I found that the course had way too many fresh out of high school kids who either didn’t know what they wanted, thought they could be the next Lucas, still had some high school tendencies. I was a bit older than them and established myself a bit more to mature and grow before finding my way. There weren’t enough people that were my age or slightly adult who took the course as seriously as they should. This partially ruined my learning experience. I was 4 years older than most of the students and still too young for the few adults. Way too much drama and high school attitude that most of my classmates carried through in their adult life. Because of this I didn’t get a lot out of this during the projects as I felt were owed to me.
This is a flaw with the admissions portion as mentioned before, not the students themselves. As mentioned, even if you have a demo tape. If you had the money or a scholarship, you were in. No real filtering of students who would actually elevate or make the course.
The course was overly priced.

I feel a little silly rating my University, but if it helps someone seal their decision in attending CapU, so be it!
Quick note: No two people are ever going to have the same exact experience with a university. It will be different for everyone. With the sheer amount of variables there are to it (types of classes, teachers, people you deal with, differing programs, your personal state of mind — just to name a few), it’ll highly vary. There really is no one-​size-​fits-​all review that I or anyone could possibly give about CapU that would apply to everyone.
And while it may seem like a cliché, what you get out of a university experience entirely depends on what you’re willing to put into it. I cannot stress that enough.
Has CapU had its occasional mix-​up or lemon? Of course. All universities do.
With that being said, however, my experience here has been pretty great. I am currently a school year away from finishing my bachelors degree in their Early Childhood Care and Education program. Throughout it I have been blessed with great teachers, deeply provoking classes, awesome resources, revolutionary content (no joke) and an environment that I am going to very much miss when I graduate.
Would I recommend CapU? Absolutely. Will you have the same experience I did? It entirely depends. That’s up to you to find out. :)

I haven’t had any of the issues mentioned before me so I’m happy about that. My entire experience so far has been phenomenal. Returning to school after 17 years gives me the advantage of comparing things to «how they were» and let me tell you: things are good.
There is a huge support system from counseling to TONS of free workshops for students, free writing centre, beautiful quiet study spaces, campus nestled in the woods.
Registration was a breeze — most is done online — the advising centre was very helpful as well, especially for somebody like me that is returning after a long absence.
I am in 3 courses and my instructors are all passionate about what they do and very present and accessible to their students.
I’m pleased overall.

I really wish I had done more preliminary research before applying to Capilano University. After reading the other comments here on Unilocal,I can definitely verify that they are still suffering from the very same shortcomings years later. I had applied to the WLP program for 2012 and was subsequently interviewed and accepted. I paid my deposit then everything went downhill, quickly. Program administrators I had ongoing correspondence with abruptly stopped replying to my e-​mails. I was told after I mailed them a $ 500 deposit they would mail me the course registration forms. I imminently mailed them the $ 500 and waited the month they said was required for mailing of the registration forms. I never received the forms and contacted the program administrators communicating this, they never responded. After a month of not hearing anything from course admins that I previously had communication (albeit lackluster at best) with prior to mailing them $ 500 I became suspicious and begun doing further research on the school. I found that they were notorious for delivering a post secondary experience that left a lot to be desired. After I came in contact with former students of my program who advised me not to take the course I decided I had had enough with the «university.» Of course I hadn’t heard back from the program administrator in 5 weeks at this point so I e-​mailed the course instructor saying thank you for the opportunity but at this point I’d very much appreciate my deposit back and to withdraw myself from the program. Two weeks went by and I hadn’t received a response from the instructor let alone the administrator from 5 weeks ago and at this point I had lost hope of ever seeing the course registration forms, so I decided to write an e-​mail to the higher ups which I felt would at the very least garner a response. The very next morning I was told while my claims of poor administration didn’t possess any validity but I could have my money back. So it seems like poor admin is an ongoing issue at this school and I am another one of the many to suffer because of it. I’m not sure why Capilano refuses to acknowledge their horrific administration, but I know that as long as they refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings, they are refusing to fix their shortcomings, and until they do, this school is certainly not worth your valuable money and definitely not worth your invaluable time.

There are a few great teachers, which I will gladly provide names for if asked. However, the administration and advising are just horrid. I was given wrong information (way off the Richter scale wrong) numerous times. I’ve been passed around through different hands, sometimes waiting weeks to get a simple answer. Sometimes in the middle of an email conversation, the advisor would just drop off Earth. I’ve been given advice that has wasted courses, lost me money, and valuable time. This school isn’t professional and although I was always wanting to transfer to UBC, this really quickened the decision process for me.

I took four courses at Cap. I’ve experienced worse, but this wasn’t great. On the plus side, the courses are cheaper than anywhere else I’ve gone to school. On the downside, you basically get what you pay for. My profs were nice – one was really a lot of fun – but they were not good teachers, and one was perpetually late for class and lacked professionalism.
Also, parking isn’t great and they nickel and dime you for everything. Sure the course is cheap, but you want a student card? That’ll cost you. Photocopies or computer print outs? Well you have to buy a student card to get them or else buy a $ 2 copy card. And their UPass fee is $ 138! Oh, and during the Olympics they pretty well just shut everything down for 2 weeks. Hello? It’s one thing to cancel classes to help the Olympics out with their traffic issues, but we’re not paying you to go on holidays for two weeks. Some of us still needed services!
