Nortown Meats & Specialities

Staff are cold. Typical York Mills merchants. Merchandise is way overpriced. Hot counter items are actually pretty tasty when they are available. Meh!

OK what have they done with my Nortown? Where is the cluttered store with ridiculously narrow aisles? More importantly, WHERE ARE THE RUDE EMPLOYEES?! The place has been renovated — looks fabulous and very upscale but part of me misses the old Nortown. I especially miss being ordered around by staff and am not sure I can cope with all of this niceness. The weird thing is that the customers have seemingly become nice too — in the pre-​reno «old days» the average Nortown customer would push in front of me in line. Today a man ahead of me insisted that I go before him. I felt as though I’d slipped into a parallel dimension.
Having said that, they still have the best Jewish comfort food outside of my mother’s kitchen so five stars it is!

The deli counter offers both chopped liver with egg and without, of which I prefer the latter and haven’t seen it anywhere else in town. Prepared foods look good, but kind of pricey.
They carry a decent selection of bagels, including Gryfe’s and Montréal style. There is a discounted day old bread section, but the bags are not priced so you have to ask.
I prefer this location over the Eglinton one for ample parking and to avoid one grumpy lady cashier. It is located in a strip mall with a Shoppers, Metro, Second Cup, Richtree and Hero Burger.

Great fresh meat. This is your classic butcher shop where if you want a certain special slice of meat at a certain thickness, they can get it for you. The meat is extremely fresh and the marinated steaks are absolutely delicious. The fish is also very fresh and they have a very wide selection. They can also trim the fat off the chicken so if you get a bunch of drumsticks, they can take the skin and all the fat off which is awesome.
I don’t know where they get their soups or if they actually make it themselves but they are terrific. All you have to do is heat them up and they taste as if it was new.
They are not open on Saturdays.
