Legend Records

Legend is by far the largest record shop in Ottawa. It is also a time warp back to about 1985, and I mean that in a good way. I find their prices creep up a bit more than some of the other shops, but arguably it is worth it just for the retail experience.

I’m surprised that there aren’t more reviews of Legend Records here on Unilocal.
I’ve been shopping for music at this store for about three years, and visit about three times a year. I drive passed it everytime because it’s a store located in a basement. The tiny sign is almost impossible to see while driving and avoiding the pedestrians and their kids and dogs. After I realize that I’ve passed it, I’ll take another stab at it and eventually find it. Then there’s the issue of parking…
Why do I visit Legend? Because they have the most vast collection of lps at their disposal. Most of them are used rock records from the 50’s, 60’s 70’s and 80’s. Their jazz collection is actually pretty good. Their hip hop collection is tiny.
What makes Legend a challenge is that their collection is so big that it could take you a day to go through it all! My approach to save time and money is to think of a song, band or album that you’d like and do a quick search. I go through that process about 20 times a visit. I’m successful in finding what I want about 20% of the time. If I go through the whole collection, I’ll probably have $ 100 worth of lps after just going through the ‘A’ section.
I have to admit that I’ve never walked out of Legend without spending money on records. Thank god I limit myself because if I searched the entire store for lps
I’d like, I’d end up spending a month’s worth of my salary!
The reps behind the counter are always very helpful, but even they haven’t heard of some of the obscure stuff they get in stock. :)

Very good selection of LPs, CDs and DVDs. Friendly helpful staff. Lots of memorabilia for the dedicated fan as well.
