St Andrews Presbyterian Church

This is a review of their pig roast, which cost $ 15 per person.
Being alone and in Picton for a few days, I needed this dinner. Unfortunately it is one of the few church dinners that I would not give 5 stars to. I may not even go back, for reasons to be explained.
First, I was informed that the pig was not a pig, but rather a pork roast. Not a problem that is was a roast, it just wasn’t as advertised. Some of the pork was a little dry. There was a big platter of pork and some of it looked good, but you were not allowed to choose what you wanted, it was served to you.
The food was very good, as at all church dinners. Pork, corn, salads, too many desserts and not enough main courses as at most dinners of this type. Sadly, there was no bread to make a sandwich with your pork (if you got any). By the time I got there (a half hour after it started), there was no mustard. Gotta have mustard with pork. There were no potatoes or hot veg either.
A big plus was that they had some sugar-​free pies for dessert.
Strangely, you started at the meat end of the buffet instead of the salad end. This is backwards as your meat gets buried under your salads and gets cold.
Reasons for the lost star:
— Paper plates, paper spoons, paper or plastic everything. There is no excuse for not using real plates etc. Think of all the paper and plastic you threw into the ground to stay there forever, for your convenience. Not spiritual.
— Diners were sticking their hands in the food instead of using the tongs provided for corn, meat, etc. One man picked up several pieces of corn from the platter and put them back before finding the one he wanted. Church volunteers especially were grabbing pieces of meat from the pork platter with their hands as they went by.
— Worst of all, although it was a buffet, you were not allowed to serve yourself pork off the platter. A lady served it to you in very skimpy amounts. I tried to go back for seconds but got an even smaller piece of pork from a giant platter of it. It was a bit of joke at our table, and as soon as the lady who was serving went to eat her own dinner and left the pork platter unmanned, there was a scraping of chairs as people rushed to serve themselves some pork. I am sure she thought she was doing the right thing and was unaware that some of us were saying «where’s the pork»…
So, there goes one star and I hate to do it to a church fundraiser, but they need to know…
