Becker & Company

I used Becker and Company to complete a purchase and sale of a home. They did the transactions on both end of the deals. I have used this law firm in past to do 2 other transactions with no issues. My lawyer at the time was John Becker. I was pleased with his service. Since he has retired, I was passed on to a new lawyer, Lisa Frey. She was nice but very busy. Never answered phone calls directly. Every phone call went to voice mail. sometimes I would get a phone call back and other times I didn’t.
There were several mistakes in my purchase transaction that was a result of inexperience and carelessness of their legal assistant. The mistakes amounted to about an additional $ 28,300 of costs that I had not anticipated. GST and transitional tax was missed plus additional adjustments which I told them about. They did not read the addendum and obviously did not keep up with the new real estate tax laws. This is rather dissappointing since I seek legal expertise hoping that I didn’t have to double and triple check their work. The statement of adjustments for purchasing the home was revised 3 times and the buyers statement 2 times due to mistakes I caught.
I have never experienced anything like this to a point that my confidence level in their competency was quite shattered. I do believe it was the legal assistant who was extremely careless and calls me on the 11^th hour to tell me that I needed to transfer another $ 20k of funds to their account otherwise I couldn’t close.
I contacted John Becker about the mess in the legal paperwork and asked him to call me. He was unresponsive. He didn’t care to call back to apologize and didn’t even care that this botched transaction was a reflection of his brand and his reputation. I was extremely disappointed. After sharing this story with my co-​workers, colleagues, friends and family members, they all said, they should NOT be charging you for a service you didn’t get. After all that, they gave me a discount of $ 200 but to this day, I still haven’t receive all the final paperwork and I still have to follow up with them about one more adjustment.
Well, I have shared my experience with my close circle of influencers and now I am sharing it with the public. This was the absolute worst legal experience of my life and I have done a number of real estate transactions. I would NOT recommend them for ANY legal work.
If I can give you any advice, it is to train your legal assistants and make sure you hire ones that can actually do the job.

Do not use these guys! They over bill and under deliver on service. Perfect example of why Lawyers have a bad rep…
