I’ve been visiting since they first opened, and I believe that they produce the benchmark Prince Edward County Pinot Noir. Bruno and Jens lovingly restored the old Barn into a beautiful tasting room, and it provides the perfect backdrop to their fantastic wines. Pinot Noir specialists, they also dabble in a little Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and a fantastic sparkling wine. The progression and evolution of the wines is evident in a vertical tasting. Their Pinot Noir is now the equivalent of a village Volnay wine, and I do not say that lightly. Who knows where it will be in ten more years? A barrel sample of the 2015 confirmed that this will likely be their best ever. They don’t advertise, yet they sell out regularly, such is the quality of their wine. If they have anything left when you visit, buy, buy, buy!

The Old Third was the first stop of 10 wineries during a visit to Prince Edward County. What a fantastic start to a great trip! The restored barn has been strategically pulled together with minimalist internal styling(furniture, lamps, plants and statues) that add beauty to the surround without stealing the wondering eye from the raw warmth of the barn and its gorgeous surrounding countryside. The standard three sip tasting was all it took for us to fall in love with their exceptional Pinot Noir. It is obvious that the owner is passionate about what he does as everything that is The Old Third oozes that passion. Before I go blathering on any further, in short… Fantastic wine, fantastic environment, fantastic customer service… FANTASTIC!

This winery is so beautiful and definitely a must-see if you’re checking out wineries in the Prince Edward County area. The winery/tasting area is situated in a restored barn from the 1860s, which was salvaged after sitting unused for 40 years. The grounds are absolutely stunning and the patio out front is perfect to enjoy a glass of wine, cider and even a fresh crêpe. The owner was there to do the wine tastings himself and stressed the fact that this winery uses grapes native to their terroir in Prince Edward County and not from Niagara. I would highly recommend trying out their cider as it is one of the products they specialize in, as well as their pinot noir.
