History
Established in 1914.
On September 1, 1914, Red Deer Public Library was created. The Library had a number of homes in the first half of the century, including its first home in the Board of Trade/Firehall Building, in City Hall next to the Jail Cell, and on the North Side of Ross Street, where the Parsons Clinic is today.
A new Library became an election issue in the mid-1960s, and after some controversy and a successful plebicite, a new one-story library was built to celebrate Canada’s Centennial in 1967. This new facility was made possible thanks to generosity & vision of long-time trustee Charlie Snell and his wife, Librarian Mabel Snell.
A second story was added to the building in 1979, and in 1993, planning began for a major expansion and renovation of the Downtown Branch, including the addition of a brand new Children’s Library.
Today, the Downtown Branch is one of the finest public library facilities in Canada. With special spaces for Kids, Teens, and Adults, there’s something here for everyone!
