Lucullus Bakery

Picked up my friend’s birthday cake here. Got the strawberry napoleon cake (crunchy almond chocolatey cake layered with creams). Bit too sweet for my taste, but still very tasty. Also the price is very reasonable, $ 32 for a 8 inch cake with personalized chocolate tag with writing. However, this place is extremely busy during weekends, make sure call beforehand especially if you’d like to pick up a whole cake.

I decided to pick up a birthday cake here this past weekend and was quite surprised at the pricing of the cake I got.
After staring at their selection for a few minutes, I asked one of the ladies over the counter how much it would be for cakes approximately. She had explained that it depended on the type of cake so I asked about the mango mousse cake that was in the display and she said it was only $ 30 (which I thought was pretty good for the size it was and in comparison to other bakeries I’ve gotten birthday cakes at).
I opted for the mango mousse cake that was likely 8″ for $ 30 and it was a good choice! The mousse was not super artificial tasting but nice and refreshing overall.
The only downside about the displays of cakes was that there wasn’t any signs so I wasn’t able to tell what cake was which.

This place is always busy when I visit. The egg tarts are a popular choice here as when they put them out, people would grab a lot of them and eventually there will be no more or you can ask and wait for the next batch. You have to come here earlier in the day or all the popular breads will be gone by late afternoon. I usually get the pineapple bun, egg tarts, hot dog bun and cream bun. I tried their HK milk tea once and I did not like it as much since it was a bit water down for my taste.
Service is fast and efficient at checkout. The price is good as well as I bought 6 items and it was only $ 9.00. If you buy 6 or more items, it is tax free which is an added bonus.

Pipping hot pineapple buns. They make multiple rounds throughout the day so you’ll be bound to pick up one of these buns straight out of the oven.

Found this place last year and loved it but the reason for the 2 stars is the prices have gone up a lot! The buns are still good but they seem smaller and the price is now a whopping $ 1.55
For each bun! I got 6 buns and a large milk tea and it cost $ 12 and change, including tax! Doesn’t seem like such good value anymore… I could’ve got 2 meals at the food court for the same price with leftovers the next day… Also their lunch boxes used to only be $ 5 and now they’ve raised it to $ 6! Don’t think I will be coming to buy as much with these insane prices… Noticed the last time I came they don’t have the lineups like they used to… hmmmm wonder why…

I don’t know why reviewers say that the employees were rude because the two women working were really nice to me!
I came in to fulfill my egg tart craving, but wasn’t impressed! They were kind of bland. I was expecting more from reading the reviews. The coconut tart was so delicious though! I just wish I didn’t walk out with only one coconut tart and eight egg tarts lol should’ve bought them vice versa.
I also had a coconut bun that was pretty tasty.
I would come back just for the coconut tarts.

Terrible customer service, at least one of the ladies behind the counter is impatient and rude to customers. The bakery is decent but the experience is ruined by at least one employee.

Went to the Richmond hill location and while their food is great the attitude from the staff is not. Went today and asked whether they had egg tarts and they said it’d be an hour wait so I returned an hour later. Staff A unwillingly goes to check for me in the kitchen, staff B saw me and said it would be another hour. I asked why they told me the same thing an hour ago to which she bluntly said «like I said, we don’t have it». Staff A returns and says 5 more minutes. Staff B hears that, shuts up and ignores me — no apologies. This is the 3^rd visit and all 3 have been pretty similar — over egg tarts!
Also note if you get their gift cards, they have tons of restrictions on how you CAN’T use it (no cake orders, no egg tarts, no hot foods, no drinks). They don’t tell you that when they sell them to you.

I agree it used to be 4 stars. As of September 2015, their buns are consistently smaller (20%), with visibly less filling (~40%). I can understand the price increase (over 10%), but cut back on quality is not the right way to treat the customers.

Lucullus is arguably the best chinese bakery in all of Richmond Hill/​Markham area in terms of quality. I always love walking into the smell of fresh out of the oven bakery there. What separates Lucullus from other bakeries is how they constantly push out freshly made bakery whenever they run out. So all their buns are usually pretty fresh and not stale.
Their most known bun has to be their pineapple bun. It is a must have if you visit Lucullus for the first time. In my opinion their pineapple bun is probably the best in toronto and even better than most bakeries in Hong Kong. The bun itself is super soft, and the crispy sweet topping is not over the top sweet which is perfect for everyone. They always run out of pineapple buns and whenever they finish making a new batch, it will be gone within minutes.
Along with bakery, they also serve rice boxes in the morning till lunch time and it also comes with milktea. They are also very popular because of its price (only 5.99) and its got great portions and are always fresh (they make them fresh everyday) but they run out very fast at around noon.
Overall amazing bakery. And a great place to grab a quick bite or meal.

Lucullus is definitely one of the best bakeries in town in terms of quality (and the price reflects it).
The egg tarts and pineapple buns are fresh, constantly hot out of the oven as they sell out rather quickly. The pasty on the egg tarts is light and flakey. perfection!
This is my go-​to place to pick up a cake for birthday or other occasions. The cheesecake is my favourite, as it is light and not overly sweet; the chestnut cake is worth noting as well.
The cashier ladies can be kind of rude at times as it gets quite busy and hectic during the weekends; not much of a sit down place, they only have about three tables.

I came here at 7pm on a Sunday expecting that I’d be left with either cold buns, or low stock. I was surprised when I found three trays of fresh pinapple buns. I just finished eating dinner at Hipot next door, and was beyond full. Of course though the fat kid in me took over, and I had to try a bun immediately. The buns were so soft and fresh, they had the perfect amount of crunch in portion with dough. I am beyond surprised that I want to shove my face with another bun right now even though I can barely type due to food coma. Cant wait to go back, i’m definitely going to have sweet dreams tonight. Lol

Their HK milk tea is amazinggg. Worth coming here just for that. The right amount of evaporated milk mixed in, very full-​bodied tea. One of the few places that I know of where you can order S-​M-​L for milk tea.
Their egg tarts and buns are okay. Not the best I’ve had though, which is why I took off a star. But because of how busy this place gets, there are constantly new batches being made so they are pretty fresh.
Quick service up at the cashier & tea bar. The ladies up in the front are nice & efficient. Seating is always filled up on weekends, so it can get tricky to find a place to sit and eat. Buns/​pastries are slightly more expensive in comparison to other Chinese bakeries (i.e., approx 20 cents more per item), but the quality/​taste isn’t necessarily any better.
Coming back regularly for their milk tea, but probably not for their pastries/​buns

Seriously? I expect a lot better from Lucullus. I’ve had high expectations from this place (due to word of mouth), but upon coming in and seriously taking a look around, I find myself quite unsatisfied.
We came because we had a voucher ($ 12). Apparently, we’re not allowed to buy anything but baked goods (that means no lunch, no steamed glutinous rice dumplings, no drinks). Very well, the baked goods it is.
The baked goods are expensive. Egg tarts are $ 1.35. So are most other buns. Swiss rolls are $ 8.00. So are Walnut cakes. Cookies are $ 4.00 minimum for a pack.
The baked goods are overcooked. I noticed more brown buns here than golden brown buns. That’s a big turn-​off.
Another big turn-​off is that there was a big fly trapped in one of the bun displays… where buns are not in plastic bags. Yum yum for the fly, but not so much for me.
I seriously have no idea whatsoever why this place is so popular…

always such a long line up, but sooooo worth the wait for those delicious egg tarts. Get the flakey shell ones! Wow its amazing, I always buy 6 and save them for the rest of the … week. (but common, they actually last like a day)

Okay because this is my 200^th review I felt the need to throw it back, super old school.
Most people that know me well know that I don’t really like Egg Tarts, I prefer Coconut Tarts (揶挞). My favorite egg tarts are ironically the Portuguese perfectly brûlée top ones that they sell at KFC in China (shame level zero). However with that said my main concern when it comes to coconut tarts is the pastry crust as well as the color of the coconut filling.
I personally like white/​minimally artificially colored coconut filling. I also don’t really care for the maraschino cherries but whatever, it’s a necessary evil with coconut tarts, just pick them off. Lucullus makes HANDS DOWN my favorite Coconut Tarts ever. On one fond memory during a trip to Toronto for a crazy party weekend, I dragged my hungover self to Lucullus to purchase three dozen coconut tarts to bring home and share with my parents. My fats were so happy.
Over the years with many moves I haven’t been to T.O. as frequently as I would like but I still make Lucullus a mandatory stop! I’m a creature of habit and along with Fei Da in Chicago Chinatown, Lucullus just brings back great memories for me… In the form of delicious pastries.

The egg tarts and pineapple buns here are delicious, especially since they come out fresh so often. The bbq buns are also very good: the filing was different than most I’ve had but tasted fresher and more moist. My family got a variety of buns and cakes and there wasn’t one that we didn’t like, even after they sat around for a few days.
In addition to the buns we also got a slice of each of the cakes. Definately try the napoleon, my personal favourite. Each layer was light and airy like eating a cloud, sweet but not too sweet. Chocolate mousse and mango are a close runner up followed by the chestnut and finally the black forest.

I came here with the gf as we received a «bang» card for a recent wedding we attended. We were both presently surprised they were still open as it was about 8pm and a snowy dark evening in Toronto.
There weren’t much buns left on the shelves, but we were able to get a selection of egg tarts, coconut buns, pineapple buns, apple croissants and various other goodies. I was not to impressed by the size of the buns as I’m used to gigantic ones you get downtown Toronto. The taste and flavour of these however was fantastic. The buns tasted great even a few days after we got them and it was nice that each pastry was sealed individually when purchased to maintain freshness.
Overall I was happy with the bakery and I would definitely come back for more in the future. I can’t wait to see what other buns they have available during the daytime.

As Chinese bakeries go, this one is pretty bomb. My first happy thought was, golly, they open LATE for a bakery! Here I am, hustling in at 7:45pm on a Saturday night and they’re still open? Awesome!
I came here with a «bang» card, or the pastry gift card you get from wedding invitations, and it was for $ 12. No hassle at all to use it.
The pastries themselves are quite good! My favourite was this meringue nut cream pastry that they sell next to the cash register — either in a slice ($ 2.50) or an entire loaf ($ 15), and its absolutely amazing. Crumbly and sweet.
Their egg tarts are definitely not the best I’ve had, but I find people’s Egg Tart Taste vary — the ones here do not have a distinct taste of butter, which I love, and they use a flakey crust.

One of the first few HK style bakeries to establish on the hwy 7 stretch. It has always prided itself with some of the better Chinese pastries found in Toronto
Their sister location serves breakfast as well but this serves a nice rice box lunch with drink for just under 5.00.
Their claim to same is their egg tart. Be you a lover of the butter or flakey crust they do an excellent job.
