Mudpuppy Academy teaches sewing and knitting in our Salt Spring Island studio to children and adults starting at 6 years old. Summer Day Camps are run in July and August with ongoing classes from September to June. The classes have a maximum of 4 students at a time assuring lots of one on one time. Summer Day Camps mix up working time with activities outside and a graduation afternoon party.

Mudpuppy is the salt fired pottery aspect of the business. Mudpuppy produces functional high fired salt ware using thrown on the wheel, hand building as well as altered forms for construction. A display gallery and studio is found on location.

Earthen Vessel is the gallery of one of a kind Canadian made artist produced funerary urns. The Earthen Vessel gallery is also found at the Salt Spring location and managed by John Reid.

History

Established in 1991.

The Sew and Sew Sewing School was the original business name in 1991. Francine Hampson– Reid was the only teacher at that time. Since then Mudpuppy Academy was born with the addition of Summer Day Camps and Valeria Pereira as an additional teacher. Sewing as well as knitting is now taught is a small personal class size. Each student gets to chose their own project from a selection of ability related samples. Each student progresses at their own pace.

Meet the Business Owner

Francine H.

Business Owner

Francine is a mother of three girls and a graduate of Georgian College of Fine Arts with a major in Material Arts and Design. She has taught children and adults for over 20 years with the Calgary Board of Education in both the public and separate school systems, Continuing Education, Kids Can Sew, Clay for Kids and most recently the Mudpuppy Academy. Francine is fluent in French and English and has Red Cross First Aid Certification with CPR– C. She also has a Calgary Police Service Security Clearance.
