I can now confirm with 100% certainty that Alfredo’s is permanently closed. Yesterday(July 23, 2014) at about 6:00PM I was walking by Alfredo’s, it was closed as it has been for the past few days and the lights were off. I peaked in the windows and noticed that all of the merchandise had been removed and the place looked completely abandoned. I asked another retailer in the area and they said that The Mad Mexican from down the street was going to be moving in there. The downside is that we have lost what was at one time a great little local market which was very convenient. The upside is that the area won’t suffer by having another restaurant. It’s worth noting that Wally’s Smoke which is around the corner on Annette Street now sells milk, eggs, cheese and bread. Plus Jug Mart down the street stocks a lot of items as well. R.I.P. Alfredo’s

When we first moved to the neighbourhood, Alfredo’s was a surprisingly convenient little grocer. They didn’t have everything, but you could do all your weekly shopping there. Since it was so close, we could also easily get anything which we had run out of. There was good veg, you could get a decent cut of meat and there were nice speciality items. But now… well, we went today and just bought ice cream. Once we were home and tried to serve it, it turned out have turned into plasticized freezer bur which you see when Ice Cream gets old(and gone bad). We checked and It had past its best-by date in February… two months ago. Some online resources say that properly stored, this could be fine… probably not a good store policy though. We threw it out, and we went to the Jug Mart down the street. The equivalent ice cream has an expiration date in 2015. Online resources say that sealed and frozen… like in the store… that a date a year out is normal. So that means… not only are the greens now wilted… not only is the deli counter to be avoided, but they are literally selling ice cream that is over a year old and expired. Avoid.

«Fine Foods»? Let’s be honest — this is a convenience store. Maybe not a bad one, but still, a convenience store. Alfredo, if he ever existed, is long gone. At least change the name to Super-Kwiki-Valu-Mart or something! It’s too bad because the neighbourhood could really use a decent grocery store.

I believe Alfredo’s changed owners earlier this year and it just hasn’t been the same. The new owners chose not to continue carrying nice produce, organic goods or fresh meats. Those fresh flakey croissants that I loved so much are now day old and completely stale. I stupidly bought a half dozen for a morning meeting and was totally humiliated when someone bite into one and said«Fern, did you buy these last Thursday?». Avoid at all costs… Alfredo’s is now merely another convenience store.

Has gone downhill rapidly – products are rotten. Service involves being yelled at and being called f**king stupid for complaining about produce, asked to open shopping bags because you look like a shoplifter and stories about theft and holdups at knifepoint. Very scary place now…

I’m really not sure what has happened to Alfredo’s — it was once a well maintained and stocked store with surprisingly fresh, local, seasonal fruits and vegetables. The store now features all varieties of wilted lettuce, halfheartedly stocked shelves and meat I would never consume. It looks to be under new management and the change has not done old reliable Alfredo’s well.
