History

Established in 2011.

The concept for Alma was developed while owner, Katie Grennan, was living in New York City. Life was hectic. She was trying to juggle her busy career and intense MBA program while also, like many women, trying to balance her marriage, personal, and social life. It was important to Katie to make time for a bi-​weekly pedicure at her neighborhood nail salon. That was her 45-​minute oasis where she could relax, decompress, and feel fabulous. She loved the convenience and familiarity of the neighborhood salon where the staff knew her well. Yet she knew that her neighborhood salon left a lot to be desired — questionable cleanliness, harsh fumes, and a mediocre atmosphere.

Katie realized that there could be a way to provide everyone their 45-​minute oasis in a way that was safe, non-​toxic, relaxing, unpretentious, and fun, with great customer service. She has now brought this little oasis called Alma to Toronto.

1. SERVICE: Always friendly, always fantastic. The receptionist offers me tea when I walk in and get settled. They have a nice assortment of loose leaf teas, and you can get them iced, or latte-​d.
Pareesha is a doll, super friendly and always distracting me during waxes. She’s very detail oriented and does a bang-​up job. I feel very comfortable in her hands, and I always walk away happy. I’ve had my nails, eyebrows (threading), and waxes done by her. All were 10⁄10 experiences.
2. ATMOSPHERE: Warm and cozy. Bonus points for purple décor because I just love purple. There is no tv or loud chattering. It’s a very spa-​like atmosphere and a huge difference from the hustle and bustle outside.
3. OTHER: They use natural products. They DON’T double dip into the wax pot, like some other salons do.

I got the Lavender Luxury Pedicure and thought it was just ok. As someone else said in their review, it wasn’t the service but the products they use. My esthetician was great, really personable and even though I was late, I still was able to get the full treatment and she did a great job on my toe polish… they look great.
I gave 3 stars because it didn’t necessarily feel like a «luxury» pedicure. The salt scrub was actually too course for my liking and the natural wax (paraffin alternative) they used didn’t seem to penetrate the skin except to leave an oily layer. Also, after coming home (only 15 mins later) my feet were incredibly dry and I was expecting them to have a finer finish on the underside. I’ve had experiences where my heels were dry and after a treatment my feet felt like butter, this was not one of those times. Seems as if the tools used at the shop are possibly sub par as well as their products.
In short, skip the frills and get the basic mani/​pedi.

I like that all the products used here is all natural. I love that they serve you tea while you get pampered. It’s a little pricey if you dont get a good aesthetician. I got a mani and pedi, she didnt clean up my cuticle well. I had to tell her a few times she missed a spot and im not really that picky. I got home and realized my index finger has an obvious flap of cuticle sticking out. Not happy with the work i got. I do not recommend Natasha, nice girl but messy work. She didnt wrap my feet properly and when i got home Pedi is all smudged.
Disappointed at alma for the first time.

I have been a regular customer of Alma for years. Paresha is fantastic in all aspects, including service quality and personality. The spa itself is comfortable, welcoming, tidy and I love the online booking system. While the services are not cheap, you cannot argue with the quality, the emphasis on natural products or the complimentary tea!

Decent but overpriced, nothing special. I went here for the «Lavender Luxury Pedicure», it was fine but it didn’t blow me away. Even though I select «be gentle» on their information sheet under «cuticles» the girl doing my toes was still a little hard on my cuticles, it hurt a couple times.
I wasn’t very impressed with the paraffin alternative, sorry real paraffin is way better it makes a lovely soft mask around your feet, this was more like a warm sheet it didn’t fully cover my feet and it wasn’t as soft and moldable as paraffin. After my pedicure I was also under the dryer fans for what felt like forever and when I got home the polish on my toes had some visible squishing, clearly they hadn’t been fully dried despite 20 minutes under the fan. They really need some dryer spray or something, or maybe these natural polishes just take way longer to dry.
I think most of the problems weren’t based on the service but based on the natural products. If natural products are the most important thing to you I’m sure this place is nice but I just found they didn’t perform as well. At least the nail polish and the paraffin. It’s too much of a step down for me. For the price I expected better overall it was just a mediocre pedicure but for the price of a top notch one.

There’s a reason why this place gets such good reviews. I’ve been meaning to try them for some time because I liked that they use non-​toxic products (I didn’t even realize that was a possibility with polish) but didn’t want to spend the extra cash.
Well I finally tried it (went with the Lavender Luxury manicure) and it was totally worth it! I find the space really cute and cozy as well which further added to my experience.
Peggy did my nails (5 days ago) and I can’t believe that there are still no chips! I would expect that form Shellac but not from this non toxic polish. I have to say this was the best manicure I’ve ever received.
I’m not very chatty during my appointments and almost always prefer to zone out. This was the first time in ages that I happily engaged in conversation and that’s because Peggy was so easy and interesting to talk to.
I highly recommend this place!

I sought out this salon due to my desire to have non toxic polishes used for my manicures. Called in the Morning and explained that I had never been there before. Booked the appointment for later that day. Had my manicure, but the polish started to go on without any cream /​massage. At that point I was told that I booked the «Essence Manicure», which doesn’t include application of cream and massage. Huh? When has ANYONE ever gotten a manicure where those two things are not included? And why wasn’t this explained to me on the phone? The manicurist literally filed into and sliced the skin on two of my fingers. The whole «experience» kept me for one hour and :20 minutes. I don’t have the time or patience to be tied up for that long to get a (frustrating) manicure at a «natural» spa that thinks crummy, crummy service can be disguised because a herbal tea is offered a (surprisingly) no extra charge. I’m embarrassed to have been lured by a wolf in sheep’s clothing. And the polish? Three and a half hours after my manicure, my polish «folded» up under the pressure of force when my fuse blew at home and I had to pluck it from the socket. So I spent more than twice the amount of money I normally do ($ 35 plus tax and tip), more than twice the amount of time, and the polish didn’t even hold up for ONE day.

Ahh. just had a relaxing massage here. It wasn’t with the RMT; I just wanted a good old inexpensive foot rub and scalp massage to help me get through the last few weeks of pregnancy. It was good that I actually fell asleep a few times! The only thing that woke me up was my own snoring (x4).
Everyone in the spa was friendly. The music was nice and relaxing. The place looked clean.
The only thing that threw me off just a tiny bit was that it’s a ‘natural’ spa, with shelves of nail polish. I’m not sure how natural nail polish and polish remover is, but that’s just me :)
Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be back for another massage… and this time I’m sure I’ll snore away

Small, pleasant, laid-​back atmosphere. I liked the colours I chose for both fingers and toes, although the selection is smaller because they use only selected lines that fit their non-​toxic model. I was disappointed to learn that their massages are not RMT, therefore cannot be reimbursed by insurance, and I hope that they are soon able to offer that service.

Just had an awesome pedi! I looked up the reviews before I came and was slightly suspicious that they were so good. But here I am giving them a five star rating; they really are that good! I like how they ask for your preferences beforehand, have non-​toxic polishes, offer tea, and massage to top it off when your nails are drying!

I wanted so much to like this spa. Love the concept and the staff are very nice. Three bad manicures in a row and I won’t be going back. On two occasions I received service from new and part time technicians– because I’m only free on weekends — and the work was messy, painful and totally unacceptable. Today they recognized how bad the manicure was. Redid it. Still awful. Cuticles cut and inflamed. Nails painfully short. Can’t believe I paid $ 50 for short ugly nails. I’ve already removed the polish. Just trying to forget the entire experience.

I had a facial here a couple of months ago and was quite pleased with the service. I’d say its the best facial I’ve ever had — far, far surpasses the popular Pure & Simple service, which I found quite lacking)
The basic facial with extractions runs around $ 75 or $ 80, which is the standard price for Toronto spas. What I liked about the service here is how much attention was paid to the extractions. Its the first time I’ve ever had a facial where I saw a noticeable difference in my skin in the days after.

Fantastic spa! I find it difficult to find a good spa while on vacation. and this place was the best! Warm, comfortable and a friendly environment! Paresha did a wonderful job with my mani/​pedi and eyebrow wax! Would definitely go back again!

It was my first time at Alma Natural Spa about a month ago and it was such a pleasant experience. I went for a wax and pedicure. It is a quaint and clean facility. Along with your treatment at the spa, they start your visit by serving you tea from their menu (where they have some great options or the tea of the month). I had pumpkin spice tea. The people working there are really friendly and made my experience pleasant and extremely comfortable. What I like about the spa most is that the focus on natural products, which don’t contain some of those harsh chemicals we smell at normal nail polish salon. It is a little pricier, but definitely worth it want to go with better products. They even sell some natural products made in-​house and provide a disposal bin so you can bring in your old old nail polish!

I went to this spa a few weeks after reading the reviews on here for a pedicure and to get my brows done. It certainly did not disappoint. Everyone was nice and professional. I hate going to a place of business and seeing the people working there being unprofessional (talking/​gossiping about other people… rude on the phone… interrupting people while they are working to talk about their date last nite.etc.etc) You won’t find that unprofessionalism here! The spa is so cute inside (cute in a grown up way. not like a 5yr old princess party kinda cute). It’s clean and organized. You get a choice of free tea and they ask you if you want a nice warm neck/​shoulder massage pillow-​y thing-​a-​mi-​jig (if getting a pedicure). Erin did a fabulous job on my feet — quick but not so fast you were left wondering if your feet were even soaking in the water! Def will go back here again.

Highly recommended. Great staff, quiet environment (they played Norah Jones for instance), and everything is non-​toxic and safe.
The prices are higher, yes, $ 35 for a pedicure seems like a lot, but it is worth it when your health is taken into consideration. The work is fast, they’re eco-​friendly and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND coming here.

Alma is a like a quick nail salon– pop in for a 15 minute massage, facial, or a full manicure and/​or pedicure. But, unlike the salons where all the aestheticians have to wear face masks to keep their lungs safe, the products here are all natural. Seriously, if you think about it, every little bit helps, right?
I just watched this movie at the TIFF about how breast cancer’s Pink Ribbon (Pink Ribbon, Inc.) has been co-​opted by a bunch of companies that might actually be contributing the the breast cancer epidemic. Beauty products we use everyday have known carcinogens. Argh! So, I’ve searching for safe, nontoxic products on Skin Deep’s website. But, there is nothing in Canada, until now.
I just walked in for a lip-​plumping facial and walked out relaxed. Wed is wine night after all– Ahhhh!
Tea is also served/​sold. Candles smell amazing, as does the lip polish and most of it is made in-​house with no harmful ingredients. I’ll be back in my new favorite ‘hood.
