Axe Capoeira Toronto is dedicated to promoting the art of Capoeira and other cultural Brazilian expressions through classes, shows, festivals and workshops. We offer Capoeira classes for children and adults of all ages as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu BJJ, Mixed Martial Arts MMA, Kickboxing and Dance (coming soon)

History

Established in 2006.

The history of «Axe Capoeira» started in 1982 with a group for children trained by Mestre Barrao. Officially the group was formed some time after in 1987 by joint effort of Mestre Piraja and Mestre Barrao.

As a result of persistent work first two «Axe Capoeira» groups were founded (Recife, Olinda). The group started taking part in various festivals and seminars. In 1990 Grupo Axe Capoeira attended an International Festival in Canada. More than 8000 people got acquainted with Capoeira there. It was then that Mestre Barrao decided to personally advance Capoeira not only in Brazil but outside it as well.

He spent several years in London and in some time received an invitation to establish a group in Vancouver (Canada). He took advantage of the offer and founded «Axe Capoeira» branch there. In no time it became a primary branch of the group. Groups appeared in Toronto, Vancouver and other North American cities.

Marcos Martins M.

Business Owner

Marcos Martins, known in the world of Capoeira as ‘Paraiba’, was born in São Luis, Maranhão, Brazil on May 18, 1984.

In 1991, he migrated to Canada with his mother and in 1996, discovered Capoeira. ‘Paraiba’ immediately fell in love with the art and began his training with Mestre Barrão, who he has been training with ever since.

At the age of 14, after moving numerous times between cities in Canada and Brazil, ‘Paraiba’ decided to dedicate his life to Capoeira. He moved back to Vancouver to live and train with Mestre Barrão for the next 3 years.

«Mestre Barrão taught me everything I know in Capoeira and in life», he remembers gratefully today. «He is the best Capoeirista I know.»

In 2001, Mestre Barrão awarded Paraiba with his ‘Monitor’ belt. Monitor Paraiba then returned to Toronto and started a branch of Axé Capoeira in Mississauga. In May 2006, Instrutor Paraiba opened Toronto’s first Capoeira academy. In March 2009, Paraiba was awarded his Professor belt by his Mestre.

Really disappointed: (I was very much looking forward to taking classes here. Dropped in this morning and met one of the instructors who was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, when I called this evening with a quick question, the person I spoke to on the phone was anything but friendly. Anybody have any suggestions for other schools that have daytime classes? Tx :)

There is nothing better than being able to feel the passion, commitment, and enthusiasm of a teacher. I have previously trained in some tae-kwon-do, boxing, kickboxing and a little bit of jiu jitsu, but the experience at Axe Capoeira has topped all of these within the first days of attending class.
Capoeira is not a very well-known art but it includes many acrobatics moves, moves that require core control and coordination as well as rhythm. Other aspects of Capoeira include a musical aspect, which gets incorporated into the martial art — or game — played during the Roda.
If you enjoy a good work out, Capoeira is the thing to try.
If you enjoy great teachers who are fully dedicated to what they do, Capoeira is where you want to be.
If you want to learn some music and history of Capoeira, well, Capoeira is what you need to take.
If you want to make some good friends and get to know yourself both physically and spiritually better, then I’d say that Capoeira is also a great place to be.
My friend and I joined back in September 2011 and I can honestly say that I have not regreted going to any of the classes that I have attended and that at every class I have learned something new. The flexibility that I used to have has returned (not yet to its fullest but quite a lot of it) and the love for learning something new keeps me going day after day.
When I started I took the Intro to Capoeira Course, which costed around $ 80 and included 8 classes and I believe that recently, if you take the Intro course you also get to try 2 of the new additions to Axe Capoeira: Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Samba, Kickboxing, you pick!
Everybody at this school is devoted to what they do, with the teacher being the most devoted and very encouraging for every student to progress, which is exactly what you want from any school. Overall, there is a feeling of comradery and friendship all throughout the studio. A great feeling to have while you are learning anything at all.
Great place to study and above all, it is filled with Axe!!!

I’ve been interested in trying capoeira for a long time. Finally, in early August, I decided to sign up for the Intro class. This is a great way to get into capoeira since they start you off with the very basics at a manageable pace. The instructors are fantastic and are very good at helping everyone participate and learn the moves. The Intro class runs for 4 week, twice a week on Tuesday and Thursdays, after which students naturally progress into the beginners class with the rest of the students. Their hours are very flexible with classes running 5 days a week, with Maculele dance and music classes on Saturdays.
I really love that in almost every class we get to learn all the facets of capoeira from the moves, to the music, the singing and the dancing. Not to mention the crazy workout you get doing it all. I don’t think I’ve ever sweat as much in my life!
The facility is very well equipped with everything that’s needed to learn capoeira: A large studio, all the pads, mats and equipment, lots of musical instruments and fantastic teachers.
I loved it so much that I’ve signed up for at least a year. Thank you Axe Capoeira!

I don’t think I’m biased but the longer I am with AxeCapoeira the more I love it.
For those who feel passion to be on public and perform there are multiple shows that the academy’s students participate in on a regular basis.
For those who need more acrobatics hours there are extra classes in one of the cities’ acrobatics gyms with the acrobatics instructors. So if you don’t know how to do that back flip go to one of these extra classes and use the trampoline to learn it with fellow capoeristas.
And for those who have seen it all and want more there are workshops from time to time with guest instructors from all over the world.
