Civello Salon & Spa

I’ve been coming here a few years now and I love it. It’s like an old Victorian house turned into a spa. Quaint and cozy. The front and main floor are salon; towards the back is the make up station. Customer service is 100% here — from when you walk in — someone greets you, signs you in and then asks if you want tea/​water/​coffee. Every single time.
They always manage to know how to book things properly b/​c I have never waited more than 5 or so minutes for an appointment. I’ve only ever had colour or more commonly a cut done here so I can’t comment on the other services but judging by everything else I would feel confident that the experience would be great.
I see Aidan for my cut and he knows exactly how to cut my hair to the way I want. I hate when stylists always insist on putting all these short layers in my hair to help thin it out… he doesn’t and it turns out lovely. He also doesn’t pile on the products… the way he cuts it you don’t need the product to do the work. Love it.
They use Aveda products here and with every cut you get a mini head/​shoulder massage. Every time. Not just your first visit… every single time! Heaven!
Everyone here is professional and polite, but not in a way you feel like they are just doing their job — in a way that feels genuine.
For your first visit I remember I got a $ 25 gift card to use (not sure if they continue that now) but that’s such a great idea! If you sign up with them, they send emails whenever they are having sales for their Aveda products.

I came here for my first dye job because I only wanted the best for my hair. That was around a year and a half ago.
Stacy dyed my hair purple and my sister’s purple hair was dyed by Byron. I was originally scared to get my hair dyed at first, but in the end, I loved my hair. I got compliments from everyone. Even my high school teachers loved it.
Fast forward almost two years:
I STILL see Stacy to get my hair dyed (purple of course!)
I don’t get it, but she manages to NAIL my hair every single time. She charges me reasonably and Stacy worked her magic and gave me dark purple hair without bleaching and damaging it!
Even with a trendy colour like purple, it was still professional enough to be in a work environment.
I’ll be back soon.
On top of having a true champion stylist like Stacy, everyone there is so friendly. They’re not snobby at all. If they ever change I’ll be so disappointed.
It’s like being at a friend’s house. Everyone is just so nice and positive and they always offer you something to drink, which is complimentary of course. They just want you to be comfortable.
Kudos to Civello Salon for having such talented hairdressers, yet remaining modest. There is a reason why I keep going back there.

I’ve been to Civello Rosedale twice and have been impressed both times. I love that they offer refreshments as soon as you walk in, and the décor inside is welcoming, historic and lovely. They also provide a short scalp and neck massage which is wonderful. My first hairstylist from a few months ago was Caitlin. She did a great job but isn’t there anymore.
This time around I had Eduardo (sp?) who did a great job again. I am really picky and he followed my instructions to the T, which rarely seems to happen. I also liked that he focused on his work instead of being too chatty, which a lot of hairstylists seem to fall prey to. However, he was very friendly and made me feel comfortable. He also asked me how I wanted my hair styled, and ended up making pretty waves in it. It was a great change from the usual flat ironed to the skull look that I walk out with.
The price is very reasonable for the service received. I will definitely go see Eduardo at Civello again.

Love this place. Aidin cut my hair and he was great. He takes time to see how your hair sits and listens to what you want. Would definitely recommend and go back!

By far the best Civello of the three. Everyone made me feel comfortable and welcomed. Great customer service and all staff professional, which is a rarity these days. Malcolm is the best! An artist! I walked in a mess and crying, and walked out feeling pretty and confident and it’s a good thing because I’m getting married in a week. Thank you Civello Rosedale especially Malcolm and Lauren.

Absolutely worth every penny!
From the second you step in the door, it’s 100% customer service. I was greeted by Nicole, a charming young lady with the coolest necklace (TimeTurner, so neat!), and immediately offered my choice of refreshment. As I was being seated, Nicole advised me that my stylist, Derek, would be right with me as he was just finishing up with another guest.
With a stack of magazines (all new editions) and a glass of ice water to sip on, I was in absolutely no rush. The décor is very cool, and while there is music, it isn’t oppressively loud or obnoxiously club-​y. All in all, quite pleasant (and the whole salon smells of Aveda products – absolutely delicious).
While Derek took no more than fifteen minutes to finish up, he was absolutely worth the (short) wait. Immediately cheerful and super friendly, he was an absolute joy to be around. He inquired about my hair care regimen, the activities and sports I enjoyed (so as to adjust the style – if I needed a ponytail, to fit under a swim cap or into a ballet bun, etc), and how much maintenance I was looking for in a style.
Once that was settled, my «vision» decided upon and my drink topped up (Raspberry lemonade this time, much recommended), I got treated to a really wonderful scalp, shoulder and neck massage with my choice of essential oils. I recommend the Aveda classic. Lightly scented, but still luxurious.
And then, the wash and the cut… and the moment of truth.
I had let Derek know that, as this was my first cut at a (dramatically) reduced weight, I had no idea what would flatter my new features. I gave him a few ideas, but the man must be a mind-​reading sculptor because he took a garbled sentence full of «classic but youthful, feminine but also kind of gay», and gave me the perfect collar-​bone length cut, full of movement and bounce while also making my naturally fine hair look a billion times thicker and so, so sleek. He even showed me what he was doing, step by step, so I would be able to replicate the look at home. (Thanks, Derek!)
I couldn’t stop playing with my hair, and the smile I wore when I got up out of that chair still hasn’t faded.
And then, then!, I was offered a complementary make-​up touch-​up by Derek, an absolutely wonderful little treat that I wasn’t expecting at all. Truly above and beyond.
My only comment is that I discovered their tips are cash-​only – but it shouldn’t be a problem if you’re paying by card. Just mention it to the front desk before paying and they’ll add it on to your total, and then give you the cash to put in an envelope for your stylist.
No upselling, no pushing of their products (though full disclosure, I did buy whatever product it was that made my hair so bouncy – but I asked Derek, not the other way around). The Manager (whose name escapes me but she was also lovely) was so indulgent while I gushed over her staff.
To make a long review short: Great prices ($ 75+tax for a senior stylist, very reasonable), convenient location (10mins from subway), and superb customer service make this a must-​try.
Much as it pains me to share my new secret weapon, when you go, ask for Derek.
You won’t be disappointed!

I was having a hair crisis this morning and called Civello to see if someone could help me. A hairdresser from my hometown totally wrecked my blonde hair, leaving me with a mess of brunette and red. I just moved to the city and so wasn’t sure who to call for help. I’m so glad my friend told me about this place.
The person on the phone was lovely and sympathetic and did all she could to book me in later today. From the moment I entered the salon I knew that things would be okay. Everyone was really friendly and I liked the beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.
Then Lauren came in and really did save the day! She’s a brilliant colourist and put me at ease right away. She worked with the mess I brought in and helped get me on the path back to blonde. She’s so easy to talk to and she did amazing work. I am so happy that I came to this place and ended up booking my next appointment as I was leaving.
Thanks to everyone at Civello for making my first visit so pleasant!

My first experience of this place: semi-​okay. My husband and my mother in law gave me a gift card as a birthday present for facial treatment and mani-​pedi. The esthetician Joni was really nice and I have no complaints about her wonderful service. The only complaint is that the receptionist made an error on the booking. Civello charged me separately on mani-​pedi for $ 80 instead $ 75 for both, a $ 25 extra facial treatment that I didn’t asked for and HST on top of it which my husband already included in the gift card. The result end yeah I got my money back for the difference but I won’t be coming back again.

Came to this location for the first time for a haircut with Byron. Excellent service, great atmosphere. Will be back.

I got a cut here… and didn’t love it. I only noticed the poor cut after my hair was straightened a week later. I ended up cutting the ends myself to not make the cut so stick straight at the ends. It looked awful before. I guess it is just hair and it will grow out…

Lauren is probably the best colourist i’ve ever been to. Not only does she do an amazing job, she is very cognizant of the future effects any changes to your hair can make (i.e. hair damage etc.). I have recommended countless people to Lauren considering how great my experience has been with her over the past few years and they have all been more than pleased. She can do everything; blonde, ombré, reds. She is also awesome to talk to and makes you feel incredibly comfortable during your appointment. I’ll be going to Lauren for all my colouring needs for years to come!

I’ve been here a few times, and I like this location. The only issue I had once was getting «ombré» done once earlier this year, the colourist seemed to think it meant putting random bits of colour on some of my hair, and leaving other strands brown. She no longer works there, but a week later I went back for a re-​do and got Taryn instead, and she did the perfect ombré on my hair.
A few months later my hair was gross and frazzled due to bleach and styling, so I got it chopped off by Byron and he did a great job, I would recommend him any time. My hair is thin and fairly straight and he cut it to my shoulders without making me feel like a dork afterwards. He also listened to everything I said. Taryn also re-​did my colour afterwards, regular highlights this time but again she did a fantastic job.

If your looking for Highlights GO To Ana upstairs! It is pricey but worth it. You will not be disappointed. I have diffcult hair to highlight to honey blond and only Ana can do it Right! She also knows what haircut will suit you. It is worth your visit and money Honest!

Does something in your face not look right? Need help? Melanie is an absolute wizard. Each time she tames my brows, I always leave feeling like a fox. Staff service here is also top notch. Love it.

The first time I went to the Rosedale location, I wasn’t exactly satisfy with what happen. I wanted to go for an ombré look for my hair colour but ended up with peek-​a-​boo streaks instead. Sure it looked nice but it wasn’t exactly how I wanted it (especially for what I’m paying). What was frustrating was the fact that some of the colour was uneven and overly bleached. The one good thing was that I discovered a great hair stylist (Nelson)! He understood exactly what I wanted and did a fantastic job at it. They also give you a complimentary $ 20 giftcard if it’s your first time there.
My second time around was so much better! I went for another colorist (Byron) who understood what I wanted and also gave me great suggestions on how the look should work. It turned out great (especially since none of my hair broke off from bleaching it). I stuck with the same hair stylist who once again, made my hair looked amazing and gave me such nice waves for my hair after the cut!

So I’ve given myself a rule that I’m going to a place at least twice before I give it a review. This is because in the past I have been going to places, been pretty pleased, written stellar reviews and then gone back and been less than pleased… and having to awkwardly revise those great reviews.
I have been to a few different locations of Civello before and been quite happy, but I have found it to be on the expensive side and it’s also a bit out of the way for me, so that led me to begin the search for another place. I did get my wedding hair and makeup done there though and was very happy.
But let’s move onto NOW. Here’s the thing: If you want quality, you MAY have to pay a bit more. Now that I’ve gone all over Toronto searching for a hair salon, I actually don’t find Civello to be that expensive. I mean, consider that you are stuck wearing your hair every day of your life, right? If you had to wear the same pair of jeans every day for 3 – 4 months, would you buy the $ 40 pair, or the $ 200 pair? EXACTLY! Except it’s really not crazy expensive and I don’t know where I got that idea from exactly…
Okay, so I’m getting off topic.
I went to Civello the first time (since I got my hair styled three years ago for my wedding) at the beginning of the summer. Now there are LOTS of people that work at Civello, so I almost don’t want to say who I went with, because I’m worried that everyone is going to start flocking to Civello and demanding this one stylist and I’ll never be able to get an appointment ever again (yes, yes, #firstworldproblems). But it wouldn’t be fair to him, to not say and it’s maybe a little silly to think my Unilocal review has so much influence on the Toronto community. So yeah, they put me with Byron.
I feel so selfless!
I had some crappy pictures of what I wanted on my phone, but he worked with them and me. In the end it was gorgeous. Seriously, I wish I had taken pictures it was so pretty.
Approx 4 months later and I’m back again, this time with a few adjustments in mind.
Once again, I think my hair looks great.
Besides quality hair, Civello is quick to offer coffee, tea or water. They also give lovely back massages while your hair is setting. Or Byron was getting fresh. Who’s to say?
Everyone there is really lovely, but Byron may be one of the better hairdressers I have had. Conversation feels more natural and he has some sort of weird, superpower memory for people, which is both amazing and unsettling. Either way it makes conversation a pleasure. And of course he does hair well, which is why we go to hair salons at the end of the day. Life isn’t REALLY like Steel Magnolias… thank God.
I’m starting to feel weird, like I’m creating some creepy fan club, so I’ll just leave it at that. Civello = good.

I decided I needed a haircut badly, but having recently moved, I needed a new shop. I recognized the name Civello, and decided to give it a try. My randomly selected stylist was Tara, and I’ve been going to her every few months since (though I should go more often!) Great everytime, and she’s quick without losing the details and clean lines of the cut.
The salon itself is very nice looking, and everyone is very welcoming and the front desk girl offers water or tea right away while you wait.

I’ve had my hair coloured by Byron 3 or 4 times now. the first time it was a bit of a mess. He highlighted it, did an overall colour and toned it. total cost came to ~$ 120, which is a GREAT deal. since then, i’ve simply been getting my roots bleached out & an overall toner. i’m usually in & out in 2 hours. the cost is $ 80 plus tax.
Civello has an upscale feel, with quality Aveda products, talented stylists, and a moderate price point. If you’re looking for someone to help upkeep your fabulous blonde locks, Byron is the man. he’s sweet & easy to chat with.

Since moving to Yonge St. Clair, I searched far and wide for «my spa». After trying 6 – 7 other places, I have settled on Civello. It is a nice walk from where I live and I look forward to seeing my aesthetician every month. I come here for a brazilian and eyebrow wax.
My favourite aestheician here is Julie, she does the quickest wax I have ever experienced. In half an hour, I am out of there. And somehow, she still manages to be detail oriented and perfect. I’m not entirely sure what kind of wax they use. I’ve asked a number of times and have always received different answers. What ever it is, it is the least painful wax I have ever encountered. Even if it wasn’t for their service, I would keep coming back for the wax. I don’t know if I can ever go back to the pain of regular wax.
They’re also great with handling cancellations! No guilt and no hassle. I once cancelled an appointment one hour before it was meant to take place, and there was no cancellation fee. The lady was kind on the phone and she rebooked me for the next day without guilting me even the slightest.
AND you get a gift certificate after your first visit. AND the upstairs is like an Aztec sanctuary. Why wouldn’t you come here!

In my search of a moisturizing and restorative manicure, I booked an appointment to get the Caribbean Therapy manicure. I was surprised and ultimately disappointed with it. The aesthetician mixed a good amount of masque and then barely used it. When I remarked on the waste of masque left over, she said, «oh, we’ll probably use it later». The available colours were limited in selection, although I was able to settle on a coral and after much hesitation.
I had an opportunity to give a more detailed opinion of my experience to the lady at the front desk. Perhaps she was a manager because she understood the impact of the poor experience I had just gone through.
I am glad I went and did the Caribbean Therapy but it’s not worth the price.
