Dance Teq

Had to come back and write another review because I love this place so much! Warm, inviting, CLEAN. So many levels, which is wonderful, so you can find the levels that truly work for you. Kevin always greets people if he’s there; Tomoe is a wonderful teacher (see below) and Ashleigh Powell is absolutely stellar!!! I just started taking the Beginner Ballet 1 with Ashleigh and she has a way of explaining things that just connects the dots and makes so much sense! All of a sudden, I see little intricacies that I’ve missed and I GET IT! Just had to plug Ashleigh in addition to Tomoe. Love this ballet school! It’s friendly with top quality instruction!
In response to previous (Jan 21, 2015 Janet S) Unilocal review, I think they updated the types of classes they have because they now have multiple levels before you even get to the Elementary level class. There’s Pre-​Beginner, Beginner 1, Beginner 1, Beginner/​Elementary THEN you reach Elementary. This is one of the best parts about DanceTeq — it’s really geared towards dancers of all levels (even if you’re a beginner!) and with their focus only on ballet, you get lots of levels (not only Beg/​Int/​Adv where Beg can indeed be quite advanced).

Took the Into to Ballet for Absolute Beginners — I like that it’s 2 weeks only. Gets you up to speed (or a refresher) and then you’re ready for the Pre-​Beginner Ballet. I like that they have so many levels before you’re ready for Beginner Ballet. Careful, detailed, friendly instruction by the lovely Tomoe Yamasaki; she is wonderful! I will be back to continue my ballet journey in a safe, clean, welcoming environment.

Danceteq offers great ballet classes for the beginner to the professional. However, I found that even the beginner classes are very advanced for a real beginner. There are some students who are enrolled in full-​time ballet school or ex-​ballerinas who take the beginner course. It’s a great way to build your technique & alignment.
The studio is located at George Brown College. The college is about 5 mins walk from the TTC station. The studio itself might be a bit difficult to find at first, you have to go down stairs and make countless turns.
There is a live pianist in every class. Teachers are professional and each class is fun and different. Sequences in the centre can be challenging. Sometimes class can get pretty full.
Kevin is an amazing teacher, and very nice! I never actually took any of his classes (too advanced for me).
Prices are comparable to other studios. $ 18 for drop in and packages are available too.

This is a great place to take ballet class, in the rehearsal space for the National Ballet of Canada, and from an array of excellent instructors. I appreciate that the studios are warm, especially in the winter months, and the floors are good quality. Levels tend to skew high and vary even within levels depending on the instructor. Live accompaniment is a big plus and if you purchase a punch card, the prices are a good deal!

Amazing and accomplished teachers (many are former soloists/​principals from the National Ballet), wonderful pianists, and lovely, spacious studios (this is where the National Ballet practices).
Really great atmosphere in the studio. Professional quality teaching, yet still laid-​back and welcoming to anyone. In the evening intermediate ballet classes, there are aspiring young dancers (often in town for auditions or summer workshops), professional dancers, and recreational dancers (from ages 13 to 80… I’m serious) all taking class together. It’s a lot of fun and not competitive at all.
You can pay-​as-​you-​go or buy a card of 5÷10÷20 classes.

Elegant and professional, without an air of judgement or snobbery. A very welcoming and friendly environment of dancers of all levels and experience. A good teacher makes the class fun as well as educational. The atmosphere inspires one to throw on a hot pink leotard and really giv’er.
