I’ve found this place on Airbnb — it looked lovely, reviews were good so I decided to book it. My initial message to hosts went unanswered, which I found strange — usually Airbnb hosts respond in a prompt and friendly way. Since we were travelling trough Canada, our mobile reception was not great and I could not contact them again before we arrived to Toronto. So on the day of arrival, while we were just a few miles away from this place, I received a very angry call — the owner was extremely unhappy about us being late and did not hesitate to let us know that. She demanded an additional surcharge for lateness, claiming that her Airbnb listing stated that the guests are fined if the checkin is not on-time. I was very upset by this call but told her that in a few minutes we will arrive at her place and than we can discuss the situation. On arrival, we were held in the doorway for 10 minutes, while the host lectured us on the ways we should behave, and than demanded additional money for the outside parking and additional surcharge for Toronto tax. When we tried to express our complete surprise on all those additional charges, she said that she does not care if we get the ticket, if we decide not to pay for the overnight parking. Her partner/husband joined in on berating us for not reading the fine print in the policy, which he worked so hard to put on their Airbnb listing… We were on the verge of just turning around and getting another place to stay, but it was late, we could not cancel without loosing money already paid and we were so tired so we decided to pay whatever they demanded and just go to sleep. The place was simply awful, everything squeaked and groaned — the doors, the floors, the stairs. You cannot make a move without waking up the whole building. There is no soundproofing whatsoever, we heard every step our neighbors made and there was one bathroom with moldy curtains for 4 rooms on the floor we stayed. There was no water in the room and the printed policy in the room contained mostly the list of things we cannot/should not do or pay the price. Our evening was completely destroyed, we decided not to stay for breakfast and left as early as we could. Just to finish — when I tried to check their claims on Airbnb the next morning, I discovered that they removed their listing and cancelled my reservation so I could not leave this review at the Airbnb. Dunn House B&B opened last summer, in a heritage home, in Parkdale. This is a historic area, going from riches to rags to riches once again, while maintaining its unique character. While I love the area, it’s about a 30 min TTC ride to downtown T.O. Management has changed and the place is no longer focused on green or organic. The owners have cut back on services that helped to make the place unique and now overcharge for parking, are not child friendly and have rules posted everywhere. The house is authentic, beautiful, but bathrooms are shared, the noise factor is something that should be considered and breakfast is very basic. I usually opt for Bed and Breakfasts for the quiet and personalized service that you don’t receive in Hotels, but this place doesn’t quite compete. Wifi is consistently problematic and kitchen closes right at 10am with no access to coffee.
