G.H. Johnson’s Trading Company Ltd

We went in looking for a couch but didn’t find anything that worked with our house. Afterwards we went to check out the stools in the back. After finding 2 stools that we liked with no price tags the salesman told us that we could pay $ 200 cash and carry. We then told the salesman we had no cash. He then asked us where we banked and told us the closest location to the store. We left the store and went to a branch that was a 4 minute drive away. We brought the 2 stools to the front of the store so they were accessible when we came back. Once we returned we saw that the stools had been packaged up and someone else had purchased 3 of the 4 stools in the store. We asked the salesman why he had sold them when he knew we were coming back and he said sorry the customer wanted them now. He also had no remorse on the fact that those were our stools. They only had 1 left in the store and had to order us another one and wouldn’t honour the $ 200 cash. We left and will never go back. It was completely unprofessional I would not recommended this store to anyone.

After dealing with owner Pat and the problems that followed I now understand he micromanages this business but he does not seem to care that all his staff are rude and do not care about the customer! I bought some chairs that are falling apart already and after complaining about not receiving a call from HIm I was treated very poorly. hung up on me a couple of times and he kept me on hold and actually admitted to my face that he was not taking my calls with an obscene hand gesture in front of his staff and clients. motivaton= $$$

They may have decent furniture, but so do plenty of other places both locally and across north america if you also shop online. I went in recently and see that nothing has changed. As you enter, a meathead was sitting there on a laptop, who was quite happy to stone-​faced stare as you enter, but says nothing. Once you walk around the showroom, nobody utters a word or says hi to you either. I asked a question and got a blunt answer. What a welcoming place! The place was messy and disorganized as usual too. I’ll never buy here on principle.

The reviews for this place are so positive and I don’t understand why. While the range of product here is good, for me it seems overrated. The customer service is the worst. The person in the tile department did say «hello», «good-​bye» and «it’s porcelain.» However, I felt as though we were getting in his way, since he did not make any effort to help us. There was also no other customers in the department so he was not swamped or swarmed with people. Also when we walked through the renovated kitchen area, more staff seemed busier with their computer screens than addressing us or even noting our arrival. I’m the first person to shop in the neighbourhood, however, GH Johnson is not getting my business anytime soon.

Can you imagine having a company that offers a product that the customer loves yet you cannot deliver that product to the customer in an efficient and professional manner? This is GH Johnson. My experience with their product has been excellent but everything else is awful. We bought two beds one in our condo and one when we bought our house. Both times the delivery and customer service portion of our purchase was a nightmare. Not only were they chaotically disorganised basically had lost our entire order and couldn’t deliver it but they were actually accusatory. they accused us of not paying on time, never making the purchase, or agreeing to a different delivery date even when my copy of the bills of sale were produced (they had lost theirs). oh an the bed we ordered came in the wrong colour.

WORST EVER! Happy to take my money, push for the «full coverage» on spills and tears for five years, and FAILS TO DELIVERY THE COUCH!

I had the worst customer service experience ever here, and that’s saying a lot. When I told the owner this he surprisingly laughed loudly and said, «I can’t believe the things customers say». But at least he got the couch (finally) delivered. Will never buy again here and am happy to hear it’s becoming a good brewery soon!

Okay, but be wary. Nice furniture at a reasonable price, but once you’ve given them your money you’re on your own. Also don’t bother with the useless warranty… it won’t be honoured. We bought a leather chair last Winter and the salesman pushed the extra warranty saying the chair would be replaced for any reason if damaged. A few days later some spilled milk in a paper shopping bag was on the cushion and removed the top layer of leather where it had made contact. I called the warranty company they explained the warranty should never have been offered because the chair was a floor model, and that GH Johnson’s would be given all the information and would have options for fixing or replacing the chair. Mark Johnson returned my call a week later and completely contradicted what the warranty company had told me. He said of course floor models were covered and that the actual reason the warranty wasn’t covering the chair was because they hadn’t come to spray it. When I explained again that the warranty company said I should never have been sold the warranty in the first place and that we were given a false sense of security in regards to the chair he told me this was «the strangest conversation he’s ever had» and that I was trying to get something for nothing out of him.
So who do you want to believe? GH Johnson’s or the warranty company they’ve associated themselves with? Either way I’m stuck with a damaged $ 1000 chair.

You can get the exact same furniture you would get at high end shops BUT it will take forever to actually come and the customer service to follow up on your order is atrocious. We ordered 8 large pieces that we saw at other stores for a lot more. Quality has held up but getting it was painfully slow. I’d call and follow up and the girl answering the phone would pick up and put me on hold forever and ended up hanging up. She was very unhelpful. When the furniture actually comes it’s great but just beware you don’t get it right away.

Looks like I’m not the only one with a complaint regarding their terrible customer service.
My purchase for my Simmons Sofa Bed was made through Chesterfield Shop too bad G.H. Johnson wasn’t very attentive. When I visited their location it was very busy and looked like there was only 2 sales people on the floor. I had a question which I asked and when the sales person responded she left an impression I was annoying and wasting her time. So I left, annoyed and frustrated with her 2 answer response but understanding that she was really busy.
Fast forward to now. I emailed Simmons they gave me G. H Johnson’s info and Chesterfield Shop. I decided to visit Chesterfield… what a difference in service. My salesperson was attentive, answered all my questions, took the extra time to explain in detail all while giving me my space to walk around and decide.
I put a tentative deposit down at chesterfield so I could call G.H. Johnson first as I wanted to make sure I wasn’t over paying. First call my name and number was taken and someone would call me back to price it for me… no call back. Next day I called again they price matched Chesterfield (they were more expensivet) but didn’t offer the same warranty. When I asked for the same 5 year the lady on the phone told me «well we aren’t covering any stains and stuff but ya ya well do that you just have to come in today for this price.» Unprofessional, pushy with an attitude.
In the end I chose to go with Chesterfield since their customer service was better and they had a wider range of sofa beds making me feel a lot more comfortable with my purchase. The next day the lady from G. H Johnson called me and I apologized that I forgot to call her but I decided to go with Chesterfield since I had already done up the paperwork and dealt with them but thanked her for her time… her response «WOW…OK» and she hung up.
If you are in the market for a sofa bed, visit Chesterfield Shop. Not only is their customer service far better but their prices are more reasonable too.

I absolutely loved everything i bought from here back in 2007. fast forward to 2013 and the service has been absolutely horrible. Rocky dealt with us in an honest manner and there was no cheating. Michelle lied to us about the delivery date, the cost of things and what we were getting. We were told verbally it would be 4 – 6 weeks and that our cushions would be seperate, that there would be no extra charge for the fabric we chose. Well none of that was true. it’s been 3 months and they delivered the product and it wasn’t what we ordered so we sent it back only to be infromed that there’s nothing they can do. they made us pay 100% last week and now will keep 25% and take the sofas back. They may have good stuff but they are not honest and there’s many sites out there that outline similar experiences with G H Johnson so be aware. I regret not listening to those when I convinced my parents to buy their furniture with these guys… they’re only here for 6 months and now 3 months later no furniture in the house and they’re out of luck despite having spent $ 3000

Is there a «No star» qualification? Or a minus? Horrible customer service or rather lack of. 5 months and counting waiting for a couch to be shipped. No update whatsoever from the store, we had to call and ask on the status and no one would tell us what is happening. We were given an estimate of April 15. Didn’t happen. Half of money given, making the store a few bucks in interest. You ask why we don’t cancel? Meant to, but really no time to shop around. Anyway, joke of a business, a monkey would run in better.

We purchased a coffee table from the floor and came back the next day to pick it up in our SUV. The coffee table is a white porous stone top and when we unwrapped it at our home, there was a big, sticky, brown stain right in the centre of it. We have called 3 times and no one has called us back. The last person I spoke with (salesperson Michelle — who was happy to take our sale in the less than 5 minutes it took) was very unfriendly and said that it is a final sale item and nothing can be done. I have photos of the way we purchased it without the damage but they refuse to take responsibility and basically blamed us for the way it is today. What they don’t realize is that it may only be a $ 400 sale for them, but it’s going to cost them much more (no more business from us and we will post our review wherever we can.) If you like the products in this store, Direct Interiors carries all of the same brands.

It really surprises me that there are any positive reviews… What a &%*# nightmare of a company.
Who thought that by ordering a bed on September 10^th, 2012, it would only be delivered to my place on February 1^st, 2013. (I was originally told 8 – 10 weeks, putting the delivery date around mid November) Also being delivered without the key piece that we specifically requested. Because we have no storage space in our home, we need to be able to store stuff under out bed. I was assured that the sales associate would order a mechanism that would lift up the mattress and slats in order to store things easily and effectively.
In dealing with one of the main people at the company, I thought I would get extra care. little did I know, he just doesn’t seem to care at all. He was unreliable with answering the phone or calling me back. Every time I called him to follow up on the delay in getting this order, I would mention this device and he would reassure me over and over again that it is there. He even claimed to have the bed delivered to the showroom to check… Clearly that DIDNT HAPPEN.
I feel like a broken record among my colleagues and just wish GH Johnson would get their act together and just deliver what has been ordered in a timely fashion without wasting my time… clearly they don’t concern themselves with good customer service.

Amazing selection, amazing prices, and friendly efficient service. When I saw amazing prices, I don’t mean that this is the cheapest place in the city to buy furniture. But I do mean that you get great value given the quality of the stuff. It’s mid-​range stuff at low-​end prices, basically.
The only minus is that the place is pretty unorganized, and even more so right now due to some ongoing renovations.

Good furniture, bad service. We found a bedroom set that we liked at GH Johnson’s, and the price was quite reasonable, but delivery was a terrible experience. In total they had to come four times in order to deliver our bedroom set and fix its problems. The first three times they set a delivery window of about 3 hours and each time they were more then an hour outside that time window. More importantly, each time stuff was missing or broken. How can they possible run a business like this?

what you’ll find here in it’s massive spacious airy warehouse is vast selection of well made fairly priced furniture.
hhhmmmm, but they aren’t perfect. you can expect a couple of phone calls to sort out delivery and you may need to follow up as well. but in the end they are very nice, helpful and have an honest approach.
if you have any issues, they will take care of it immediately, with a get it done right attitude. it’s almost and old world charm you don’t see at most shops.
some how this attitude makes up for some of the other hiccups! we are super happy with our sofa.

I purchased a chest of drawers. It was a special order due to colour selection.
The saleswoman was extremely helpful, the item was completed well within the estimated time, delivery was prompt and efficient, and I am very pleased with item.
They have a nice selection of furniture in different styles, mostly Canadian made. Prices are in the mid-​range.
They are currently renovating their store. As Kat mentioned, they have no sign — I hope they’ll put one up when they finish.

This is my absolute favourite furniture place in TO. It’s just the right mix of contemporary, well made stuff at middle-​of-​the road pricing. It’s for those that are right in between Ikea and UpCountry.
We have bought our living room furniture (couch and chairs), bedroom set (bed, nightstands, dressers) and kids’ rooms furniture there over the years. Everything is perfect and ages well. For a small fee ($ 75 I think) they will drop off and assemble everything you order. This is totally worth it!
Also, the selection is great and I have had repeated complements on various pieces.
Just recently, we bought our daughter a ‘big girl bed’ for about $ 700 and saw it a week later at Bunkhouse on Avenue Road for $ 1200! They are also willing to negotiate on some pieces. Plus, the basement (recently renovated) has ‘as is’ and significantly reduced clearance items that are actually decent and not just crap.
The location, as Kat says, is a bit awkward but totally worth the trip to check out this furniture mecca.

I’ve bought a junkload of furniture at G.H. Johnson’s in the past but today I tried to limit myself to only browsing, and man, it was tough. The store is a massive showroom on Dupont that’s easily missable as it has no signage (each time I go at least one person getting out of their parked car asks me if I know where it is).
The showroom is loaded up with gorgeous furniture that would best be suited to a large, roomy space as most of it’s pretty big. The kitchen tables are so big they can probably easily seat 12 – 15 people and they’re very rustic looking. Tons of dark brown wood and leather-​backed dining chairs. Huge dressers, ornate chaises and bedroom sets — including an ornate goldleaf canopy bed that I’ve been lemming for months (minus the $ 2200 price tag). They also have really, really nice mirrors — HUGE ones as well as smaller ones that are unique and beautifully crafted.
You can often find prices drastically reduced by up to 50%, and on this visit I noticed that they were renovating to include a second floor. As a result, all of the bedding was on sale and I must have spent 30 minutes eyeing a velvet tulip duvet cover from the Nygard collection before deciding it’d be easily findable at a better price.
It’s a family business that’s been around for 60 years and features products from its own designers as well as imports from the U.S., Italy, Malaysia, Indonesia and China. There is no pressure to buy and no salesperson breathing down your neck — you can easily stop in and stroll through the showroom without encountering a single employee. Take your time and sit on the sofas, beds and touch things as you please. It’s great for getting home décor ideas, too!
