Jenny’s Hair Design

Jenny is a master hair cutter, colorist and stylist.
She really listens to what I want and gives it to me.
Her haircut is so good, even when I need another one it still maintains it’s shape.
I have been to so many hair stylists in Toronto and I’ve finally found Jenny.
I’ve been back 4 times and will continue.
Check her out. She is also very fair in her prices, and fun to be around.

Usually I was getting some basic cheap haircuts but one day I’ve decided to find a place where they could do something more stylish. My wife suggested Jenny as she was using her services for a while. And my wife is far more demanding to the quality of her haircut and she was trying three or four different places before, now she always get her hair done at Jenny’s.
Well, so I came, asked Jenny to do something more interesting with my hair, and she did right away! Being pro as she is she knows exactly what could and could not be done with your hair, what will look good on you and is absolutely open to your suggestions or alterations. Also she has been traveling a lot and is originally from Italy, so it is fun to talk to her as well.
Of course, she charges a bit more than basic haircut places but nothing unaffordable. I pay $ 20 for my haircut, and it is totally worth it. Keep in mind she is booked a lot, so it is better to call in advance and schedule an appointment, especially if you plan to come on Saturday. Also she accepts cash only. I know there are also some Groupons but personally never used them.
In general, both I and my wife are very satisfied with her service and absolutely recommend it.

Jenny is very professional and knows her stuff! She is passionate about her work and it shows with the time she puts in her clients unlike other hairdressers who tend to rush with the work. I did highlights, haircut and treatment with her this weekend for my wedding and she did a lovely job. The vast experience she brings from Europe is indeed beneficial. Highly recommended!

My review is a bit late. But better late than never. :)
So, this place is not like one of those super fancy places with chandeliers, damask wall paper and serving all kinds of teas/​coffee. But who cares!!! I just needed a basic hair cut at a reasonable price. It’s located upstairs above other store fronts. So slightly difficult to find. The shop is small, but bright and clean. That’s important.
Jenny has many, many years experience as being a hair dresser and she knows her stuff! She understands hair and the various types of textures/​thicknesses/​colours. She gave me a great recommendation of putting lots of layers in. I was a bit weary at first, but I trusted her and guess what? She was right. I’ve gotten a few compliments on my new «do». One friend who is quite into hair said that the layers were done really well. Which I figured because Jenny did take the time to make sure it was just right. I appreciated that!
Lastly, it was lovely talking to her. And like Dawn said, she does play jazz while you are there.
I will definitely be back! And I do recommend you checking her out.

I have been to Jenny’s Hair Design twice now, and I can confidently say that she has become «my» hairdresser. I have struggled for months to find someone to do my hair and my search is finally over!
Jenny is very kind and professional. She knows her stuff. I never have to say «only a little bit off». I love my long hair, and it seems that she cuts off all my extra hair and I don’t feel I’ve lost any! My hi lites look superb, very bright and even. They blend very well with my hair.
Jenny is able to cut my hair without me worrying that it won’t look right. I have been other places and leave feeling sad that the cut was all wrong; not at Jenny’s! She has her own private salon, no rows upon rows of hairdressers chatting; just you, her and some jazz tunes! You won’t be disappointed if you visit jenny, and you will likely return after you’ve been once!
Lastly, if you have a hard time finding her, you have to go to the door at 593 Yonge Street. It is between a Popeyes and a Luggage place. You go in the door and up ONE flight of stairs. Enter the doors to the left, then turn right and follow the hallway all the way to the back. Jennys is the glass sliding door that is frosted at the top half. Slide it open and your new hair awaits!

The service I received was a perm. I paid $ 200 & tipped her $ 20. She burned my neck, scalp, behind my right ear & forehead.
This is what happened.
During my perm, I felt an excruciating burning sensation on my neck. When this occurred, Jenny kept saying she did not understand why it was hurting me so much. She would wipe my neck but I would only feel less pain for about thirty seconds before it came back. There was another customer in there at the time as well. At some point Jenny actually left the salon (she owns the salon and works alone). The customer was still at the washing station with her head in the sink. Meanwhile, I was sitting there, enduring the pain. I was waiting for her to come back to wipe the chemical from my neck. The wait was about 5 minutes.
I thought maybe I had eczema on the back of my neck which caused the burn (giving her the benefit of the doubt that she probably hadn’t done anything wrong). I told her I might have eczema on my neck which could have caused the irritation when the chemical had contact with my skin. Jenny passively blamed me, saying that «I should have told her so she could bring cream to protect my eczema». When the perm was over, she told me the burning sensation would go away so I paid for the service & left a tip.
Later that night, my neck became stiff and was painful to move without turning my upper body. This lasted up to about 7 days. It was also difficult for me to wear clothes that would rub against my neck. I emailed her to let her know what was going on & included pictures of the burns on my neck and forehead. I took time off from work the next day to see a doctor. The doctor told me my neck, scalp & forehead had been chemically burned during the perm & was unrelated to having sensitive skin. She prescribed cream to prevent infection. I called Jenny with this information. She told me it was my sensitive skin & it was an allergic reaction and NOT a burn. She said she did not understand WHY the doctor was telling me that & offered hair products & Polysporin because «she liked me». She also told me it was my fault for not telling her about the eczema in the first place & if I had told her, she would have brought cream to protect my skin during the perm process. At some points of the conversation, she was even laughing — she was not taking me seriously. Anyway, I was not comfortable with accepting what she was offering me so I said I would think about it.
Many of my co-​workers, friends and family were outraged when they came across the burn on my neck and forehead. They could not believe I had paid for her service and insisted that I re-​claim my money. I was very conflicted because I liked Jenny. But after thinking about it, I came to realize she cared more about the money than me. About 7 days later, I came to her a second time in person, asking for a full refund of the service, letting her know I had pictures dating up 7 days and a doctor’s note to prove I had been burned. However, this time she admitted to talking to a doctor about what happened to me. Apparently, the doctor told her, if a client has eczema, the chemical will react anywhere on their skin. She also claimed she wouldn’t have gave me the perm IF she had known I had eczema (which is inconsistent with what she said before — that she would have applied cream to my skin to protect my eczema from having an «allergic reaction» to the perm chemical). She continued to insist it was not her fault & it was not her responsibility to ask questions concerning my health (e.g., eczema). I told her as a consumer of her service, I do not have the background information to know what kind of medical history or information I was suppose to tell her. She continued to say it was my fault. When I said I would talk to a lawyer to discuss my rights as a client, she offered me 60 $ & I declined. She then offered me 60 $ & some hair products because it would equate to HALF of what I paid. I also declined.
During the consultation, Jenny failed to provide the measurement of the hair roll and pinpoint any pictures that would show what my curl would turn out as.
I spoke to many different people who have received perm services or have relatives who provide perm services. They said she should have:
1. Tested my skin FIRST
2. Applied Vaseline to my hairlines for extra protection
3. Put a towel over my neck as protection IN CASE the chemical leaked
Jenny used a cotton coil on my hairline (to protect the chemical from touching my skin) which evidently did not work seeing as I was burned on my forehead, my neck, and my ear. What really upsets me is she failed to accept responsibility as a hair professional for the fact it failed to protect me. INSTEAD, she blamed me for the burns I received as a result of her service. Better Business Bureau reached out to her about two weeks ago and she has not responded. I guess Jenny values money more than her clients.
