History

Established in 1860.

In the late 1880’s James McTamney joined the business of J. Flemming, which at that time was a bailiff business. The bailiff business loaned money on land deeds. McTamney quickly progressed from employee to partner in 1891 and became sole proprietor in 1908. After renaming the business James McTamney & Co. in 1916, he moved the store to 139 Church St. at Church & Queen St., where it remains today.

Today it’s a renown Jeweller of distinction, an upscale buying & loaning establishment which carries on the family traditions. The fourth and fifth generation carry on the same high business standards, thus maintaining McTamney’s reputation as a trusted Jeweller & pawnbroker. Employing as many as 24 employees at times, making it one of Canada’s largest and oldest Jewellers & Pawnbrokers. These highly valued employees embodied the McTamney’s credo of fair and honest service. One or more certified Gemologists and other specialists make up this great team waiting to serve you.

Meet the Manager

Floreen S.

Manager

I began working in a small jewellery store in Northern Ontario as a gift wrapper when I was 16 years old. Retail has been my passion and life for over 40 years. A friendly smile, good listening skills and clear communication are important.
