Known as Kürtöskalács in Hungary, Chimneys are delicious and unique freshly baked goods originally only prepared for very special occasions such as weddings or festivals. High demand has made them available throughout the year and they are becoming very popular all over the world.

Our Chimneys are made with only premium quality ingredients from scratch by hand each day and are baked, not fried, using a traditional-​style rotisserie grill.

The dough is raised, then rolled out and wrapped like a ribbon around a circular baking dowel, and rolled in granulated sugar. They are then baked fresh before your eyes over our special rotisserie Chimney grill, until the surface becomes golden-​brown. While baking, the sugar caramelizes providing a crispy crunch in every bite. The freshly baked dough on the inside remains fluffy and soft like the best piece of bread you’ve never eaten.

With our traditional grill and baking methods, we are proud to bring this delicious and unique sweet or savoury treat to you in Canada on four wheels.

History

Established in 2015.

Chimneys are delicious and unique freshly baked goods that are made on a rotisserie grill, originating from eastern European countries, specifically Hungary. In 2013 Original Chimneys founders Kristin and Justin sold all their belongings to travel the world for a year, ending their tour with a visit to Justin’s family in Budapest. There, they tried a delicious traditional chimney cake and knew they had to bring it home! After training in Europe in the original chimney baking techniques they brought back an original-​style grill used on the streets of Europe to bake — not fry! — these delicious treats right before your eyes in Canada. They will be serving up sweet and savoury varieties made from scratch with premium ingredients that are 100% natural and mostly organic. Chimneys are light and fluffy on the inside with a crunch on the outside — they’re the amazingly delicious baked good you never knew you needed!

Immediately after getting married, Justin and Kristin sold all their belongings and took off to travel the world for a year.

One of their final stops was to visit Justin’s family in Hungary, where they tried a Chimney cake — and after one bite they decided they had to bring it home and make it their business.

Justin’s grandmother, Eva, was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary. She remembers growing up eating Kürtoskalács on special occasions. Eva left Hungary during the revolution and made her way to Canada with only her husband and two children, Zolton and Tamara (Justin’s mom), leaving everything else behind.

Eva has built a wonderful life in Canada but she of course still loves and misses home.

So, not only do Justin and Kristin get to share something so unique and delicious with others, they also get to see the smile on grandma’s face for bringing a piece of Hungary back to Canada!
