Sanagan’s Meat Locker

So i realized something about the pepperettes, which i complained about them changing the recipe… After I let them sit out for a bit, they were back to their true selves. I think I may have gotten them too fresh or may shouldn’t have put them in the fridge. Whatever the reason may be, I will now resume buying these in 50 counts because they make me want to be a hoarder.

By far one of the best butchers I’ve been to. Been spending a lot of time doing groceries at my neighbourhood loblaws only to be let down for a few months without ever seeing them stock any wagyu beef. Since I was in the Kensington area, I decided to drop by this place. A couple of things I really enjoyed with this visit so far.
The first thing that grabs my attention with this butcher is that it is very clean. No weird odours foul odours or any blood on the floor unlike the few Chinatown butchers I’ve been to.
Second thing that I absolutely love is the wide selection of the meats that they have to offer along with various cuts. After seeing that there was not any wagyu strip loins on display, the staff was more than happy to see if they had any in storage frozen. They were able to find a big piece. A small miscommunication at first as I only wanted a few steaks but it quickly turned to me purchasing the whole slab of meat. They had them custom cut individually and fat trimmed then individually vacuum sealed.
The staff here definitely knew what they were doing and was passionate to help. Will be coming back for more!
PS I have cooked one of the wagyu strip loins and they are delicious!

Consistently excellent and friendly service, every time without fail. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Excellent meat, I’ve never been disappointed whether it’s steak, chicken, sausage, ground meat, burgers, etc. Always flavourful and tastes extra special, especially knowing its from Canadian farms who treat their animals right. It may be pricier then supermarket meat but you are paying for quality. It’s good bang for your buck. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for consistently excellent meat product.

All of my experiences here have been great! In terms of their deli counter, their sandwiches are insane — highly recommend the Korean fried chicken sandwich.
Their meat selection is great — tons to choose from, and I like knowing that the meat I purchase i local and pasture raised.
In terms of customer service, everyone has been great so far. I recently purchased bone in, skin on chicken breast and was billed for boneless/​skinless. I didn’t realize it until I got home so I called them, and they offered an easy and quick solution over the phone. Very impressed.

I’m not an expert on meat by any means so I can’t really comment on the detailed characteristics of the meats here. I bought some stewing beef here and I actually found the quality of the beef was so good it almost didn’t go with the cheap stew I made. Next time I’ll make sure to use better ingredients to pair with the better quality of the meat.
Despite my lack of knowledge about raw meats, I have had my fair share of charcuteries, and I’ve been very happy so far with everything I’ve bought from this meat shop. There are a lot of butchers working behind the counter, so you never have to wait long to receive service. I’m sure cutting charcuteries can be quite a pain compared to some of the other meats (often because people want small portions of a variety of them), but they seem willing to cut more as long as I wanted more. Their pork pâté was the best I’ve ever had, including ones from restaurants specializing in charcuterie. I wish they served duck pâté! The prices are good — for about $ 35 I could serve up a charcuterie platter for 6 people. I would never be able to get that much meat at Loblaws for the same price.
The only thing that disappoints me about this place is that it’s a bit far from where I live, but then again, if it was right next to my condo I probably would end up spending too much money on charcuteries.
They’re also part of the vicinity reward program, which you can redeem for a sandwich combo or a whole rotisserie chicken. I’m aiming for that chicken!

Had the Sunday roast sandwhich. Fucking amazing, would definitely go again. The beef was so flavourful, and the sharp cheddar elevated the umami kame-​hame-​ha coming from the roast beef. Don’t get me started on that bun, it was crispy outside and super soft inside, i don’t even know what it was called but it was damn right delicious. Can’t wait to come try their other sandwhiches.

Generally speaking, I like this place. The staff are friendly, helpful, and on the ball. I would say this is the place to go if you’re an average carnivore looking for a place that offers the basics with a few extra treats. It’s not the place to go if you’re a curious or experienced carnivore in search of the full gamut. They don’t carry chicken backs, necks, or feet. And on the many occasions I have shopped here, they were out of something or other (like the genoa salami or chicken livers). It seems like everything is catered to the hipster (I know, it’s Kensington) which would explain the higher price tag. That being said, I can always swing by my Portuguese butcher for these things, including a litre of pork fat for three dollars (they only carry one cup containers here for two dollars a pop).
Overall, a clean place with quality fresh meat. And again, the staff are amazing. Try the house made pepperettes; they are perfect!

I’ve only ever been to Sanagan’s so I can’t really compare them to other local butcher shops. I don’t cook with meat often so I go in to the shop with the recipe and the staff provide suggestions on which cuts work best and how much I would need. They’ve never been wrong! I also like the fact that it’s located in the Kensington market/​Chinatown area — very convenient location if you need to pick up last minutes items for your dinner party.

This place has never let me down. It was convenient that it was a 30 second walk from my old apartment but I never left empty handed, or with more than I wanted. The meats are always fresh and even with a line leading out to the door, it always moved at a very fast and productive pace. The staff is always looking for a smile and a quick conversation while they prepare your order — I have a crush on a few of them ngl
You can taste the freshness (local) in their product and they have such a great selection of jarred pastes, mustards, jams etc.
Wish I still lived in the city to get my meat&deli fresh. Oh, and the prepared foods are well priced and delicious. Always pick up a rotisserie chicken for rooftop picnics.

I’ve been here a handful of times and have found the customer service is consistently great. very knowledgeable and helpful. They have the take a number type service which I like, as long as I remember to take a number. I have tried a little bit of everything here and have never been disappointed by the quality, and find the pricing reasonable for what I am buying. I have been to a few other of the downtown competition and I wouldn’t say you are going to find better pricing elsewhere. I have dropped in at busy times, and quiet times and each has been a pleasant and efficient meat buying experience. Glad to have them as my local meat source.

Located in the spot previously occupied for decades by the iconic European Meats on Baldwin, this is definitely a notch above your average butcher shop. There are basically four sections to the shop: the butchered meats, the cured meats, the condiments and accessories, and finally the hot table. I have purchased goods from all but the hot table portion, and I can tell you that this place is as good as Cumbrae’s, but without the pretention and a little less expensive to boot.
The selection of meats is excellent, though not massive. The focus is on quality, featuring hormone and antibiotic free meats of the highest quality. I have had great success with the pork, beef, lamb, quail, sausages and chicken, and I look forward to trying more.
In the cured section, there are some fabulous artisan salumi, along with some excellent pates and terrines.
There is a section lined with condiments and those hard to find accessories that only a good butcher will have. And don’t overlook the freezer where you can find great goods a little lower price.
Definitely worth the prices!

This review is for the Roast Chicken sandwich at the sandwich counter:
I would have liked to order from the butcher counter but we were visiting from out of town and didn’t have a way to prep any food. We opted for the roast chicken sandwich instead. The sandwich ($ 8.50) was huge and stuffed with a lot of roast chicken. I wasn’t very impressed with the roast chicken itself though — I just didn’t notice anything particularly flavorful or interesting about it. Just chicken. The crispy skin inside the sandwich made each bite a little more delightful than it would have been without it though. I’d love to come back someday and order from the butcher counter. For me, the sandwich counter is OK — not bad, just not rushing to get back there.

I purchased lamb sausages and Piri Piri chicken drumsticks.
The sausages were incredibly fatty. I cooked a pound of them and ended up with 1 cup of orange fat.
The chicken was not delicious and had a slimy mouthfeel.
The staff was pleasant but the quality is not great. I won’t be back.

I’ve heard of the soup «Nazi» in New York. Hold on to your hats we got a sandwich «Nazi» in Toronto. I ordered a sandwich with fries, came without, I pointed this out a heated discussion followed, and I was barred. After the mix up my friends sandwich arrived with fries he didn’t order.
There are friendly places to eat in walking distance. Patronize them.
The chicken sandwich was ok, but after all the delays fries were cold.
Pigeons seemed to enjoy them.

This is one of those gems that flies a bit under the radar. Sanagan’s is a bright, clean butcher that also serves sandwiches.
The first order of business is fresh cuts of meat at their butcher counter. Everything is displayed beautifully– from beef to pork to lamb, etc., and prices here are commensurate with any grocery or major chain whose quality may not be as high.
The other nice component here is the sandwich counter. They serve amazing sandwiches (the roast beef and the chicken salad are my two favourites), as well as great fries, soups and salads. Recently I tried a chick pea salad that was amazing. You also can’t go wrong with the kale Caesar salad, especially if you like bacon.
A sandwich and fries costs $ 11.50, while a sandwich and soup or salad costs $ 12.50.
They have a small counter in the front window where you can eat lunch, provided that one of the 5 – 6 seats are available.

Macabre! (If they haven’t taken it down yet on their Facebook page) — they pose with the dead carcasses of the pigs, making jokes and thinks it funny. What kind of establishment does that. What else goes on in the kitchen that we don’t know about?

I’ve never EVER eaten a ham sandwich this good before. I haven’t actually bought meat here but it looks like excellent quality. I usually duck in for a quick bite when I’m shopping at Kensington market and the bearded hipster butchers are always so nice!

If you love meat, you will love this place, they have fresh meat everyday. They expanded recently and now have a hot food counter. If you forgot your lunch, you can come here for their famous duck fat fries. hehe doesn’t that already make you drool?! The meat is locally sourced directly from small-​scale farmers within Ontario.

One of the best meat shops I have ever been to. The selection is amazing, the quality is amazing and the staff is friendly and informative. I can see what half the city comes here — it’s packed all the time!
I came here for the food but left with a new best friend! I tried some of their cured meats (oh my the beef carpaccio and it was melt in your mouth all sorts of goodness)
I had the roast beef sandwich and the chicken sandwich that has some of the most delicious sauce or marinade on it. I devoured it so fast! Will definitely come back and pick up a few of these sandwiches. So fresh tasting!
They also sell a lot of local products here such as sauces, marinades and drinks. They support their local community and make sure everything that comes into he store has the highest integrity and quality possible.
I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other hot menu selections. Perfect on a cold day like today!
