History

Established in 2004.

The Wedding Cake Shoppe was opened in 2004 by Cindy Coelho out of her studio loft. On April 14^th 2008 the Shoppe opened its first retail location at 859 College st near Ossington in a bright beautiful gallery setting. The Wedding Cake Shoppe has won numerous awards for outstanding wedding cake designs and has been featured in Wedding Bells, Dine. to, Rich Bride, Poor Bride, Rich Groom/Poor Groom, ET Canada, Blog. to, Daily Vitamin, Slice network and Food Network. Cindy and her sister Sarah were the first Canadians to appear and compete on Food Network Challange. They Placed second only two points from gold.

Cindy and Sarah Coelho Own and operate The Wedding Cake Shoppe since 2004. This is Toronto’s first and only Wedding Cake Speciality Store. Using only the finest ingredients and making everything from scratch, the cakes taste as good as they look.

Cindy Coelho Graduated George College as a Pastry Chef over 11 years ago and has since studied at The Notter School of Pastry Arts in Orlando as well as working side by side with Bonnie Gordon before she opened her school. Taking on Sarah her sister as her apprentice shortly after opening up The Wedding Cake Shoppe.

We’ve been purchasing cupcakes from the Bake Shoppe (their new name) for quite some time. I don’t know what happened to the quality? We love their frosting (Swiss Meringue) which is not too sweet, but recently, their cupcakes are dry! Dry as in «4 days old» dry! The last order we placed was over the phone. Imagine our shock when we arrived home and the cupcakes were like pucks! I could not believe it! We were so disappointed and angry. The person who boxed up our order should have known they were stale. When we took the cupcakes out of the clamshell, they were solid! Bad sign already! WIth other cupcakes, you have to be careful not to squish them because they are «fresh» and «moist.» So the employee who packaged our order should have known better than to give a customer leftover cupcakes that were 100% at least 4 days old!!!
We also tried a red velvet wedding cake at a wedding we attended, and they had their cake made by the Bake Shoppe. I can’t imagine the horror of the bride because she even confided in me that the cake was dry. When we took a bite of the cake, we knew it was stale, but I didn’t have the heart to agree with her (sorry if you’re reading this now).
We won’t take a chance again. There are way too many other bakeries across the GTA. I hate to give bad reviews, but I do have to agree with the other reviewers in terms of the service. What the heck happened? Rude is putting it mildly! This is the second bakery that has produced poor quality cupcakes in the past few weeks. We’ll definitely try some other places, and I’m sure they will appreciate our business even more.

I follow Bake Shoppe on Instagram and finally checked out the shop last Saturday because I was in the area.
The block has an interesting mix of shops and restaurants; it’s definitely an area that has changed significantly in the last ten years. Anyway, I digress; back to the Bake Shoppe.
It’s such a cute little place. As others have noted in their reviews, there’s a wall with 3-D cakes that they have made against a shrub backdrop. The furniture that they have is pretty eclectic; we sat at the regular table and it had some funky chairs. I found service to be great; staff were also very friendly. I didn’t get a chance to try their cakes, but I can comment on their other baked treats.
Ruffles Square: It’s a Rice Krispies square, but with Ruffles chips instead. How cool is this? The salty chips mixed with sweet marshmallow is an amazing combination. I need to recreate this at home.
Bourbon S’mores Bar: A s’mores bar with a twist! The bourbon flavoured coating on the marshmallow definitely added to this square. It’s quite rich in flavour so you can certainly share it with someone else.
College and Ossington isn’t my usual stomping ground so I’m not sure when I’ll be back, but I really enjoyed my afternoon snack break at the Bake Shoppe. Can’t wait to have the Ruffles Square and Bourbon S’mores Bar again !!

This place is very unaccommodating and rude! I would tread very cautiously working with them. There are other bakeries with better reviews, 4.9÷5 and 5/5, and there is a reason for that. These guys just don’t know how to treat people, and I was dealing with the owner. Pretty terrible.

Came here on a Sunday trekking from the burbs thinking it would be my best bet to score some treats. Arrived at the shoppe just after 12pm and saw a small sampling of each dessert option for the day. As I approached, a customer in front of me called out his order– heart beating fast I knew he was going to snag the last three pop tarts… and he did. Being the optimist that I am, surely there must be more waiting for me in the kitchen– wrong. I was told new ones were coming out in about an hour-bummer! I did manage to score the flakie. The pastry was fresh and I could taste the quality of jam used (Kitten and the Bear) — a tad too sweet for my liking. The pastry itself was paper thin mostly hollowed out on the inside. Ordering three pastries would equal to one solid flakie elsewhere– not satisfied. Overall, I would skip the flakie and return for the pop tarts– too much nostalgia not to.
Word of caution– call ahead if you want to pick up several pastries! On a Sunday having only been open for an hour they were already sold out! I understand baking small batches for optimal freshness but the timing was off with several people in line hoping to score their infamous pop tarts. Service was ok no attempt to recover the situation for a disappointed customer.
Did I say I follow the Bake Shoppe TO on Instagram– those pop tarts are taunting me!
Perhaps a little frosting will brighten my mood!

Went here on Valentines day morning. I really wanted to try the jam filled pop tarts with the kitten and the bear jams. We got there at 11:30 am and there were lots of people picking up orders and a few enjoying a Saturday morning treat.
We took a seat by the window. Ordered two pop tarts and a rice crispy. The rice crispy was so good. We didn’t realize it had potato chips on it until we got it. Who knew the two can taste so good together.
The pop tarts were yummmmmmmmmmy! I went back and got another! They brought out pop tarts filled with nutella and so I of course had to get those to go! The crust is nice and flakey, almost so delicate that I’m afraid it all falls apart and I miss a crumble! Yes, I didn’t want any of it to go to waste! The jam was not too sweet, not too tart. With the icing on too, it was just the right amount of sweet.
We also got the s’more which they toast when you order it. It was super good but super sweet… especially after two pop tarts and a rice crispy. Its valentine day… I can eat whatever I want!
The décor… So cute. I love the arrow logo. The green shrub wall to display beautiful cakes. They have a small display of their goodies including marshmallows, tarts, truffles and a few cakes and cupcakes. There are two bars to sit at. One in the middle of the bakery and the other by the window.
This was my breakfast but next time I’ll drop in after dinner or as a sunday afternoon treat… Actually the two nutella pop tarts I brought home are going to be my Sunday afternoon treats tomorrow!
It was a great start to a happy long weekend!

It’s strange to write a review after much time has past. I guess I still haven’t let go of my disappointment with the way my cupcakes tasted on my wedding day. Today, while I was searching for a cupcake company to order a dozen cupcakes to be delivered to some friends in Toronto (I just moved to Vancouver), I was reminded of the cupcakes that were ordered for my wedding a year ago.
The experience at the store was good. My then fiancé (now husband) and I took our time with trying out the flavours and finally decided what our wedding cupcakes would be. The lady serving us was neither cool nor really friendly, just right down the middle. That was fine with us. The disappointing part of the experience with this company was on the wedding day — and frankly, the most important day of this entire process. The cupcakes were extremely sweet, unlike the ones we tasted in the store and we tasted quite a bit of cupcakes that day. However on the wedding day, my husband and I didn’t even finish our own cupcake (we ordered a bigger one just for us).
We saved one cupcake of each flavour to remember our wedding by and tried to finish them over the course of the week since we didn’t leave right away for our honeymoon. Each cupcake was sweeter than the next, sweet not in a good way. The Wedding Cake Shoppe makes fluffy cakes but someone definitely made a mistake with the cream/toppings and was very heavy handed with the sugar.
I like the store front and I really want to like everything about them but my personal experience has left a ‘sour’ taste in my mouth.

Of course this review is for Bakeshoppe.
I purchased a red velvet cake for a friends birthday which was moist and everyone loved. I also picked up two cakes last minute for my grandmothers 80^th birthday. The people I spoke to were very helpful and obliging when I called them 15 times to change my order.
I was sort of thrown off at first that the cakes were a couple days old and had been frozen and needed 3 – 4 hours to thaw, but they were really great, held up well and tasted fresh. Otherwise there would be no luxury of ready made cakes for the spontaneous or ill prepared. That seems like a backhanded compliment but just forewarning if you have an immaculate diet that only allows you to consume fresh out of the oven baked goods. And point being I’m really into the cakes frozen or not cover me in that buttercream.
Their counter baked goods are + (that means good)

My poor rating is strictly for the customer service. The cupcakes and wedding cake are good, but the terrible customer service I received eclipsed the quality of the food. The main contact was courteous and helpful up until the point that I signed the contract and gave my deposit. After that, every attempt at communication was extremely difficult. If I sent an email to ask them a question it was at least 4 days before she would reply. I called the store thinking that would be faster but the person answering the phone would not help me. Kept insisting that I had to wait for her partner to answer my emails.
At one point they got the date of my wedding wrong which had to be corrected. They made sure to contact me about my final deposit though. When I called to give my credit card info they said they would call me back in half an hour. They never did. I had to chase them down again just to take my money. They wouldn’t even give a time that they would drop off the wedding cake. Just a vague time frame.
Good cake, but the added stress they gave me on top of everything else that comes with a wedding was not worth it for me.

I’ve tried a lot of different cupcake bakeries both in Toronto and elsewhere, and this was definitely one of the best. I had the red velvet and the cookies and cream. The cake was very moist, they had airy, whipped icing, and the icing to cake ratio was perfect.
This place could definitely do more to advertise that they sell more than just wedding cakes… I’ve lived in the neighbourhood for years, walk by this place all the time, and thought they just had wedding cakes. Perhaps some outdoor advertising to tempt the foot traffic would be useful?
Sadly, I might have to come back and deduct stars at a later date… the lady working there told me that they were going to go from about 8 cupcake flavours a day to only two or three flavours, as they were going to diversify into other products. Not only will the lack of variety be disappointing, but I am concerned that the quality of the cupcakes will decrease once their focus is split between many products.

So far I have been extremely impressed with my experiences at The Wedding Cake Shoppe!
When I lived in the neighbourhood, I regularly stopped by for a delicious cupcake and to browse their adorable selection of baking supplies for sale — though limited, everything is so cute!
I’ve since moved out of the area and so regular visits have stopped, but as I’m now looking for a wedding cake it seemed like a logical place to explore, especially after some suggestions from our other vendors.
When I walked in for my cake tasting, I noticed they have made some changes — I love their «cake wall» for lack of a better term, which displays some of their beautiful designs. We sat down and looked through their portfolio, which is quite extensive! I was very impressed with many of their designs and when we started to chat, it seemed like they could design the perfect cake for us! We tried 3 flavour combinations which were fantastic, and will be back to try their seasonal flavours when they arrive later this summer.
While I’m waiting for my design currently, I can only imagine it’s going to be fantastic — they seemed really willing to work to create our vision, and help us refine it — I love that they are so accommodating.
So far this is been a 5 star experience that I couldn’t wait to review, and I look forward to updating it as our relationship with them develops!

My husband and I (and now our son) have come here since it opened. We attempted to find the best cupcake when we were first married because, well, who doesn’t love a good cupcake– and after eating at quite a few pretty good places and some not so good, we happened upon the Wedding Cake Shoppe and never looked back. ;)
Their chocolate and vanilla cupcakes are both heavenly (esp. the choc., but I’m partial!) and their icing is so «whippy» and smooth and just the right amount of sweetness. The thing we love best is how they infuse their icings with the punches of flavour they do so you taste fresh raspberries in every bite, or hazelnut, etc. The owners/staff are also always very friendly and helpful when we go.

It’s hard to pick a favourite among the ones I’ve tried. They were all really good, well balanced flavours. If I had to choose, though, I’d go with the Canadian maple and the baked raspberry and cream cheese. The frosting is smooth, buttery, and delicious, and the cupcakes are really cute. Not too sweet.
The reason for the 4 stars: a few of the cupcakes we ate (and we ate them right in the store/the day of) had a hard/crunchy edge, like they had been sitting out for a while. We were there around 3 pm. Doesn’t this usually happen the day after? If it weren’t for that, I’d love to give this place 5 stars.

The Wedding Cake Shoppe is a bit of a misnomer. In addition to wedding cakes, they have really good cupcakes as well. You can walk in and enjoy a delicious cupcake any time they are open. I have eaten several. They are all good; the oreo is my least favorite, as it tastes a bit too average.
The highlight of my experience here was ordering a wedding cake. I was in a mega rush, so I simply went by and met with Cindy, who in addition to being one of the nicest people on earth, totally understood what I wanted.
When the event occurred, many of the guests commented on the moistness of the cake, saying it was the best wedding cake they had ever tasted. I agreed. It was not only beautiful, it was delicious. In fact, what leftovers remained were more moist and delicious a few days later than most wedding cakes are on the day of the event.
I will always go back here when I need a cake. The prices are reasonable as well.

I recently bought some cupcakes for my girlfriends birthday and wanted to go with somewhere that could give me several options. Luckily, I picked the perfect place.
I picked a dozen cupcakes with three of the following:
— Ferrero Rocher (Deliciously rich and decadent)
— Orange Ginger (Moist and refreshing)
— Green Tea (Her favorite, but we both agreed it could be a little more «tea-y»)
— Chai Spice (Exactly what you’d expect from a chai flavor; sort of a spice cake flavor. Good!)
I think our favorites seemed to be Ferrero Rocher and Green Tea.
Although the cupcakes were delicious, it was the customer service that made me write the review. I live in the states – my girlfriend is in Toronto. I needed a place that could help make a birthday special and Cindy from the Wedding Cake Shoppe nailed it. She even delivered the cupcakes to her house for a fee with a message on the cupcakes (as requested).
My only downside is that with everything (cupcakes and delivery) it turned out to be a little pricey. Honestly though, the cupcakes are moist, sweet but not «hurt your teeth sweet», with a home-made touch sort of feel to them. Plus the look on her face when they arrived made the price totally worth it.

Trying to find a wedding cake was a huge ordeal. We went to try tons of places but WeddingCakeShoppe had the most diverse flavours including Ferreo Rocher and Green Tea which we got.
The biggest problem with wedding cake shopping is that cost is so variable. It’s based on the number of servings but serving sizes for all different companies were all different ! In addition, isnt that up to the venue itself web they cut the cake for you? in order to correct compare prices for different cakes we had to price it out by square inch per dollar like true engineers. And WeddingCakeShoppe had the best value !
Working with Cindy was really easy. Calling was easier than email but when we met she guided us through and we found our perfect design.
The only thing was she told us we didn’t need a cake topper due to the nature of the cake. But when we saw it, it was a lot more simpler than we had hoped. I kind of wished we had a topper but in the grand scheme of things didn’t really matter.
Everyone loved the cake !

I realize that I have never blogged about The Wedding Cake Shoppe but they have my favorite Cupcake in Toronto, at least the ones I have tried so far (^_^) I bought their cupcakes a few times and tried most of the flavors but I have to say that I can’t really choose a favorite, just love them all. They are just so moist even after a day or two and flavorful yet not sweet at all

Walking passed The Wedding Cake Shoppe before my yoga class. I could not resist admiring the beautiful fondant cakes that were displayed at the storefront… And I made a decision that will change my life… NO I am not getting marry. I ran after my friend and told her we have to go in here to have a cupcake!!!
4:15 pm on a Sunday afternoon, 45 minute before closing and there were hardly any cupcakes left! The cashier said someone just came in and brought almost all flavours and only Strawberry and Chocolate Truffle left… Both looks delicious. the cashier suggested Strawberry so Strawberry it is!
Before having this cupcake, my friend who is not into sweet always thinks cupcakes are super sweet and the frosting are so heavy. and she just hated that. This Strawberry cupcake will forever changed her view too!
Frosting was so light! With just a hint of sweetness…
The cupcake itself… oh so light with just a hint of chocolate. and the cake itself so moist… and has the outer layer of the cake is a little crisp…
I know it is so hard to believe but yes The Wedding Cake Shoppe’s Cupcake is just that good, excellent, out of this world!
